Was there any hate for Nintendo in the 90s? Or is that more of a modern contrarian thing? Playing the SNES they are all so cozy, like playing an actual cartoon.

I hated yoshi's island the first and only time I played it, but I was like 9 at the time

Nobody hated Nintendo. Why would they? The NES saved the industry, the SNES was fucking amazing and even if you were a diehard Geneis guy there was still nothing to be upset about because you had your own console and its library was great, too.

Everyone in the 90's had it good and we were all pretty happy in general. Yeah, there was a console war but it was just good bantz and marketing, no one made a fucking crusade out of it like faggots do now. Most people had a preference but it wasn't some blind loyalty to one or the other. Either one had something to offer so you couldn't really go wrong. There was even the TG16 for the real autists out there (yes, I had one).
>>
>>12863876
Yes, often regarded as a company that made kiddie games. Occasional nationalistic comments.

>no one made a fucking crusade out of it like faggots do now.
You're going to have anons posting usenet posts now.

Yeah there were console wars then as there are console wars now... but of course there will be differences too. One factor may be (I'm just speculating) that the age of an ordinary console warrior has greatly increased since then, which will tend to make the wars more pathetic and also more serious. I remember Sega kids saying "the Super Nintendo sucks" and not really caring about it even though I loved Nintendo games, because they weren't saying anything more substantial than that and I could just go home and play my good games and that'd be that. Whereas if some 30-year-old 4chan douchebag starts going on about this while trying to troll, it'll be more detailed, more persistent, meaner, and more annoying. There will be "funny" memes involved. Since everyone is older, it'll also be more pathetic and depressing. So that's one difference (I speculate).

Another difference is that Nintendo really has changed its style since then - some aspects of their creations genuinely are more kiddie than they used to be, and of course their hardware design strategy has been Wii-flavored ever since the Wii. I won't go into that though because it's mostly non-"retro".

I honestly wonder what Alex Beardshaw is doing today. Probably turned into one of those twitter activists who digs into people's post history to find problematic content to cancel them over.

Tracking down and interviewing people who stood out in small but striking ways in old video game magazines would make for a fun podcast. I would subscribe, if it were done well

With the same 4 or 5 grown ass men flinging shit at each other that continue to still on this board today. Kids weren't on usenet and they actually played games, so while there has always been a pissing contest, the primary users of those game consoles were more concerned with having fun than any sort of gay brand loyalty propaganda. In my experience, the shit flinging amongst children didn't really start until the PS1/N64 era.

>>
>>12866706
In America maybe.
Europe were primarily PC gamers until the release of the Playstation.
The guys behind Rare got their start making games for the Sinclair ZX Spectrum.
>>
On any substantial scale, not until the N64, and I never even saw that. N64 was the party machine amongst all my friends. Was talking to an older coworker and he said there was definitely a "Nintendo is for babies" attitude amongst Xers starting with the N64, though.
As far as I or anyone I knew, no one had a negative opinion of Nintendo until the Wii shovelware machine was released.
I'm sure you can find salty comments about NES or SNES from some seether somewhere, especially the kind of person who'd be posting about video games online in the mid 90s, but I've never heard a negative comment about them from an actual person.

00s thing. Their consoles seem to become Fisher-Price toys and their games seem to be aimed at fucking toddlers. Huge departure from SNES and Nintendo.

Now I at least hate them because of the autistic manchildren that gush about Nintendo like it's the second coming of Jesus from sun up to sundown.
>>
Nintendo was always for manbabies.
>>
>>12863876
Yes, this game is a steaming pile of shit. Nintendo failed to make a proper sequel to SMW.
>>
Nintendo was seen as uncool as early as Mario World and Mortal Kombat. I was actually there.

>Nintendo failed to make a proper sequel to SMW.
Nintendo does that a lot. I wish we got another console quality 2D Zelda.

If you saw a kid wearing Mario merch back in the day you beat his ass without question. You didn't even get in trouble for it if you did it at school.

Pretty much this. For whatever reason I liked Genesis games a lot more so my collection was mostly for it, but I still loved my Super Nintendo and never heard anything negative about Nintendo as a company until probably the Gamecube era.

Maybe not "hate" but in Japan Nintendo started to be seen as the kiddie or "normie" option for consoles. This is from a 90's and it basically stereotypes PC Engine fans as otaku who just want to play eroge, Genesis fans as actual gaming enthusiests who enjoy hardcore games, and SNES fans as normalfags who just play jrpgs and more casual titles.
>>
>>12870816
I don’t know Japanese, but it definitely seems like the Mega Drive fans are meant to depicted more pejoratively than the Nintendo fans here. Guy in the center is a westaboo who wears American brands and even has the console’s American name plastered all over is body. Meanwhile, guy on the right is a friendly, down to Earth, clean cut normal guy. Being normal was not an insult to most people back then.
>>
>>12871018
It's not suppose to be as mean as the PC Engine fan but this was from a dedicated gaming magazine, being the normie implies they don't view it as a real hobby and just play whatever was trendy at the time.
>>
>>12871027
>suppose
>>
>>12863876
Consider this. In the 90s popular kids cartoons were things like X-Men, Batman, Gargoyles, Street Sharks, Beast Wars etc. Nintendo's brand of fairy tale wholesomeness kinda died in the 80s with the Care Bears and Smurfs but, Nintendo was still the most "premium" established gaming brand.

It wasn't hated, it wasn't considered "cool" either, Sega had cool factor but Nintendo had brand recognition, being essentially established as the Disney of gaming, SNES got by very well because of association with high quality, but there were still people who'd mock baby games anyway.
>>
What's amazing is that back than, at least compared to what we have now, there was no such thing as contrarianism. Like yeah maybe once a month you would pick up a magazine that had a cartoon image making fun of something popular. But it's not like people walked up to each other unannounced, dropped a hot take, and than walked away. But that's what happens online.

People in the past were SO MUCH happier with games. You can be exposed to more negativity about gaming in one day nowadays than you would across the entire month or possibly the entire year.
>>
>>12871018
i can barely read it but it seems like a roast of the PCE fanbase more than an attack on Nintendo

Of course there was. It just wasn't as unfiltered back then. Most magazines wouldn't have printed the Sega Power stuff.
The first (Nintendo) magazine I bought had this drawing, "Doesn't matter, life goes on", when Sega was losing it with the Saturn.
>>
there wasnt internet.
only magazines that fellated them and your friends, who were kids like you and hadnt developed standards yet so you just liked whatever and anything bad you just stopped playing without really analyzing it

adults i dont know. the japan hating westerners and japan AND console hating euros probably had a decade long conniption though

iz not ein medieval sinulator or aoccer iz badd!!!

there was a lot of hate over censorship of mortal kombat 1 and my dad even rented a sega genesis for a week to get the bloody version of mortal kombat but decided he wasn't gonna buy a console over one game

at least i got to play sonic 2 for a while
>>
also when i got internet access in the late 90s i learned there was a lot of hate over censorship in FF1 and DQ and a lot of hate that FF2 and FF3 didn't get US releases

>>12873673

Yes there was...
>>
>>12863876
Yoshi story on the 64 was a turning point for the company, the first time a lot of fans bought a sequel expecting something challenging and mechanically interesting, but instead getting a literal baby game. It’s where the “Nintendo = kids console” originated. And they did little to correct course.
>>
>>12863916
you just think about this shit all day don't you
>>
>>12866770
That was mostly UK. Europe in general largely moved on to the NES when it released.
>>
>>12871939
It's roasting them all. PC Engine guy is an incel otaku, Mega Drive guy is a westaboo faggot and Super Famicom guy is an NPC normalfag. It's all in good fun, not the kind of angry and childish "everything other than my console is gay" shit you found in western magazines.
>>
>>12870816
That says nothing about Nintendo being for kids
>>
>>12873752
>It’s where the “Nintendo = kids console” originated
No it's not, retard.
Where's your evidence?
>>
Twitter has had an extremely negative impact on internet discourse. Before most insults were direct and somewhat immature, (you're a faggot) and didn't have to be taken seriously. Twitter exposed the world to snark culture, which had previously been confined to celebrity gossip rags. Suddenly insults turned into snark and clapbacks, everyone wanted to be TMZ or Deuxmoi. People no longer even attempted to argue the point, it became a game of who can dunk on their opponent the hardest and get the most re-tweets. People here tend to shit on reddit for good reason, but Twitter really best represents the death of the internet, it was by far the worst social media site in the 2010s. Now everyone acts like snarky gays regardless of the subject.
>>
>>12863876
yeah because if you started playing PC games you knew the truth about Nintendo. a few great first party games, a few other great games and miles of slopalooza licensed and derivative shit. also it was kid friendly and didnt out-xtreem the genesis or go all out like DOS games.
>>
>>12870816
hilarious because NEC didnt allow explicit material but Sega did next gen

Jesus. Nobody thought Sega was cool you booger eating reject. It was right in the corner with anime.

Criticizing Nintendo for shovelware is very questionable in this context. PC was(is) a free for all where anyone can release anything.

Nintendo hate didn't start until mid 2000 when people complained nintendo didn't have enough slop mp shooters even though the scuffed cod ports to the wii were more fun than the 360 with the wiimote controls

>Jesus. Nobody thought Sega was cool
I was in high school from 1990-1994 and sega was indeed "cool" for normalfags at the time. Madden and NHL94 were the reason, even when SNES eventually got their own ports they were ignored, it had to be genesis.
My highschool even hosted a genesis NHL tournament afer school where like a dozen people brought their consoles and games and rolled in those TV carts that each classroom had. The physics teacher was in charge of the event.

The early 90s was the first time sports games had recognizable teams and players and good enough graphics to not be cartoony, and the genesis was a cultural behemoth because of it.
>>
>>12875883
And fogot to say, it was the jocks, the skaters and the weird kids who all came together for the NHL thing. The schools top basketball player won the event.
>>
>>12875779
You'd be wrong. Sega was the console for cool kids like myself. All the Nintendo fanboys were essentially nerdy virgins. AVGN and MovieBob are perfect examples of nerdy virgins who were Nintendo fanboys. All the Chads were Sega kids who wore biker style black leather jackets and I'm living proof of that. The Sega Genesis looked cooler than the SNES anyways. So unless you had the European SNES or the Super Famicom, your SNES looked like something that a child would own in their toy bin. Meanwhile the Sega Genesis had a sexy sleek look that looked like it belong to your entertainment center.

There was internet starting in 93 or so. Not everyone had it, but don't you remember AOL and independent ISPs?

Some people had internet even before 32bit consoles dropped in the US.
