This game is REALLY boring. There is basically zero challenge in execution because the controls are so simple. Maybe that could be OK if there was a resource management or routing challenge, but there isn't because there's one obvious route and the items respawn when you enter their rooms. The only reason I've ever died in this game is because it would be too boring to spend the extra 30 seconds grinding to max rations every time I find a ration pickup, or any of the other consumables for that matter. The boss fights are a total joke. Playing this just makes me want to go play Solid again, or maybe check out Castle Wolfenstein to see if that was the superior 80s stealth game
>>12865690stealth is inherently not for you then. it takes time and patience. it maps poorly to games imo. its more akin to fishing than to action
>>12865715>stealth is inherently not for you thenI like Metal Gear Solid, Thief, Hitman, Tenchu, and Splinter Cell. And the first Ghost Recon if you count that. I considered stealth my favorite game genre for many years. Nothing in the OP is about how the stealth takes too much time and patience (MG1's stealth is even more arcade-y and fast than the MGS games which are themselves on the fast-paced end of stealth games). It is so trivially easy to sneak through a single room in Metal Gear compared to its successors that I didn't even bother mentioning it and it's a given that the game requires supplemental mechanics to support the simple stealth (mechanics it does not have)
>>12865760I'm assuming you deleted this because you looked it up and realized it wasn't true
>>12865752skill issue (you're too good)it was the first stealth game and people didnt know how to play it so its too easy
>>12865805Dodging enemy sightlines in Metal Gear is not substantially different from dodging enemies in any other game. It's overstated how different stealth is from other genres, especially in such a primitive form as Metal Gear '87
And what did you guys think of Metal Gear Acid?
>>12865690It's boring to you because you're an unfortunate zoomer double crippled by a brain damage. You're playing on an emulator following a walkthrough using save states. And you don't realize how uncommon game's mechanics were at the time because they were replicated ten thousand times since. If you play Metal Gear as intended it's anything but boring. You, however, can't be helped. You would look at Mona Lisa and say it's boring because she doesn't have cat ears and you can't see boobies.
>>12867803>You're playing on an emulator following a walkthrough using save states.I am not using a walkthrough nor am I using save states. I have taken my own notes and have been starting the game from the beginning every time I play>And you don't realize how uncommon game's mechanics were at the time because they were replicated ten thousand times since.I have played several games older than Metal Gear. I've probably played more 80s PC games than you have. I mentioned Castle Wolfenstein in the OP, and I've played it since; I don't know if I'd say it's better but it's certainly more interesting than Metal Gear 1 which is a standard action adventure game in most regards>If you play Metal Gear as intended it's anything but boring. It's very boring and I have described why. You have failed to address anything I said because you are a decrepit and demented old man who cannot understand anything>You, however, can't be helped.Lick on my nuts and suck on my balls
>>12865690MG1 is a throwaway game, and I say that as a huge Metal Gear autist. It’s just Zelda or Chip’s Challenge with a military theme, and both of those games are substantially better. Metal Gear 2 on the other hand is great, but slightly depressing once you realize that every Metal Gear game with a good story is broadly a retelling of MG2 with nearly identical story beats every step of the way.
I am demonstrating herculean willpower by not just looking up where the Enemy Uniform is because I'd really like to stop playing this game
>>12866161TRPG with optional combat and stealth focus is a really fun concept I haven't seen often, most of those games are chess matches that drag on for way too long.
>>12869161MG2 is annoying to play with it's labyrinthine level design and constant backtracking, it wasn't nearly as bad in MG1. In any case, just play Solid instead.
Very awesome stuff here. I spend 20 minutes looking for the Enemy Uniform to no avail. In desperation, I turn to the manual. I see that the manual has a section for radio frequencies; one is Big Boss's, with his first frequency listed, and the second entry is "Schneider", whose frequencies are blacked out. I think, who the fuck is Schneider? I've gotten all the way to building 2 and I haven't seen any frequency for a guy named Schneider, yet the manual is making it out like I'm supposed to have his number before Diane's. So, I look up "Metal Gear Schneider", and one of the first results is a Reddit thread: "Is there a glitch in MG1 where it doesn't give you Schneider's number?" Yes, there is. You'll literally never get this guy's number if you don't look it up because the trigger for him calling you himself never occurs. So, I get Schneider's number from the internet, call him, and he tells me where the Uniform is. Thanks a lot
I was assmad at MGS1 for years because when I was a kid, I spent multiple hours running around trying to find some way to interact with the MO Disc to find Meryl's frequency. When I learned that it was on the back of the literal game box, I was so mad that I just said the same sucked. This Schneider business reminds me of that
>>12869282>"Is there a glitch in MG1 where it doesn't give you Schneider's number?" Yes, there is. You'll literally never get this guy's number if you don't look it up because the trigger for him calling you himself never occurs. It werks correctly in the MSX2 version and was only broken in the subsistence demake. You have to WAIT on the screen where you come out of the first elevator, the one with cameras, he calls you after like 20 seconds.
>>12869301>It werks correctly in the MSX2 version and was only broken in the subsistence demake.I've been emulating the MSX2 version>You have to WAIT on the screen where you come out of the first elevator, the one with cameras, he calls you after like 20 seconds. So it might as well be bugged because who is going to wait on this screen for 20 seconds?
>>12869306>So it might as well be buggedBut it isn't. You can at least sleep well knowing you're not the only ADHD zoomie, devs of the subsistence versions are too.
>>12867803>you don't like this game because you're a zoomerI long for the days when millenisissies are all killed
>>12869161A buddy of mine once told me MG2 was the best Metal Gear game and I'm hoping he ends up being right. I have a love-hate relationship with every Solid game and I'm still waiting to play a Metal Gear game that doesn't make me want to mail Hideo Kojima a pipe bomb at least once
>>12869291That pissed me the fuck off too. “It’s on the back of the CD case”. Like, yeah, technically PlayStation games were on CD-ROM and came in a jewel case, but I would call the case a video game came in a ‘game case’, and would always and only refer to the jewel case a music CD came in a ‘CD case’, so it never occurred to me. Also, why does the game give you a useless story prop item that is an optical disc during that same conversation? That seems like it was deliberately designed to be as confusing as possible.
I/played NES metal gear as a kid because no one knew the MSX existed. We got our gaming news from comic book ads before nintendo power finally arrived. So my first look at metal gear was this ad here.My brother and I spent an hour going over it, wondering what kind of game it was that could have all these tools and weapons. The closest we could think of was goonies 2 with its massive arsenal of tools (for the time), or maybe a zelda with guns. But still no clue what kind of game it was. Just a lot of anticipation. Months later it finally arrived at our local video store we did a weekend rental. Got stuck early on figuring out the purpose of the transceiver tuning, but after that finished the game that weekend. It lived up to the hype and at the time we thought it was the future of gaming. It was one of the first NES games with this depth of gameplay and story, and the first time a game lived up to what we imagined it would be like after seeing advanced screenshots or ads (and it has rarely happened since).
>>12869321Respectable choice but it’s not my favorite game. Basically, picture MGS1 in the jungle with one or two really cryptic puzzles but otherwise really good. The game boy color game is the best top down Metal Gear imo. It’s got one annoying puzzle in the middle of the game where you have to make sure your cardboard box gets directed to the right room on a series of conveyor belts, but other than that it’s pretty much perfect.
>>12869330self reported retard lmao
>>12865690>This game is REALLY boring. It's pretty interesting for 1987 with a novel concept (stealth) and intriguing scenarios and mechanics.>There is basically zero challenge because the controls are so simple.False premise. Ghosts 'n Goblins is a challenging game and yet it has simple controls.>Maybe that could be OK if there was a resource management or routing challenge, but there isn'tThere are 24 prisoners, and you only need to rescue 15 of them.
>>12869291If you call the colonel four or five times, the game automatically adds Meryl's frequency to your codec.
>>12869301>You have to WAIT on the screen where you come out of the first elevator, the one with cameras, he calls you after like 20 seconds. That's not true. There is no call here in the PAL version, and in the JP version the only call here is Big Boss telling you to avoid cameras.
>>12869640>False premise. Ghosts 'n Goblins is a challenging game and yet it has simple controls.I should specify that the controls are both simple and not ever particularly put to the test. Ghosts 'n Goblins tests your execution heavily from the start, you're constantly being pressured. Metal Gear's controls are practically identical to Zelda 1's but Zelda 1 has challenges beyond "don't walk directly in front of this guy". The challenge of evading enemy fire when caught or in a forced encounter is thwarted by the game giving you unlimited rations that you can just go pick up (and they all heal you completely)>There are 24 prisoners, and you only need to rescue 15 of them. The prisoners are basically just along the way, I've played through a good deal of the game and I don't recall any time where I had to go out of my way for more than 10 seconds to rescue a guard
>>12869319Broccoli head meltdown
>>12869680It's a stealth game. You're not meant to be dodging bullet-fire or engaging in sword combat. The game emphasises this with an immediate call from Big Boss telling you the goal is to avoid detection. So it stands to reason that this should be the root of all self-imposed challenge - like attempting a ghost run while minimising punching enemies to stun them. The simple controls are just that - simple, functional, fit for purpose. I don't think the devs set out to make an extremely challenging game.
>>12869738>So it stands to reason that this should be the root of all self-imposed challenge - like attempting a ghost run while minimising punching enemies to stun them.Metal Gear 1 does nothing to encourage such challenges.
>>12871292Why? Because there's no extrinsic reward?Besides the game directly telling the player how it should be played, there are other systems that reinforce it.The game has a karma system where your rank/health/ammo increases as you rescue hostages, and lowers if you kill them. It's almost entirely possible to beat the game without killing humans - only vehicle bosses (which could be unmanned), the arnolds (androids), and big boss (who is not actually dead). You do have to kill one person though, Coward Duck, who tries to bait you into killing three hostages.
>>12869282It's not a glitch, it's just a bit weirdly designed. Once you take the elevator up near the start, Big Boss calls you and tells you the resistance is trying to contact you on the radio. In that room, and ONLY that room in the entire game, scrolling through the frequencies on the radio will cause a signal to be picked up once you pass Schneider's frequency, where he'll introduce himself and explain what he does.
>>12874774Big Boss only calls to tell you about cameras in that room (and only in the Japan version). There are four rooms where you can scroll to find Schneider's frequency. The camera room, the two rooms next to it, and the very first room with enemies (north from the start).
>>12869330In The Twin Snakes, they call it "the package" which is way worse imo
>>12871693>Why? Because there's no extrinsic reward?Yes. There's no ranking system (I thought there was a rank based on time, but I've since beat the whole game and never saw any rank unless I was just looking away when it displayed). You do receive rewards for punching out guards, though, since they drop ammo and rations. If the developers wanted to encourage playing the game without killing anyone then they should have indicated that somehow; they actually indicate the opposite with enemy drops. The MGS games do this with their ranking systems so Kojima and his team agreed with me on this matter.
>>12869338Thanks for sharing. Never knew anyone that played this back in the day.
>>12875926Yeah, a player ranking system was added to the Subsistence version. The highest rank codename (Big Boss) is achieved by beating the game in less than 50 minutes with zero continues, zero guard kills, one ration, and eight alerts (all mandatory). It's a fair point that the game incentivises punching out guards rather than shooting them.In later Metal Gear games, punching a guard can only knock them out. Perhaps this was the intention from the very first Metal Gear, but they couldn't easily depict knocked out guards due to the MSX2's sprite limitations. But that's just conjecture... Metal Gear is a short game with decent potential for self-imposed challenge runs if you're intrisically motivated. A pacifist run fits with the core objective of not being detected (no guards missing should mean less chance of detection), the theming from some of its systems (game punishes you for shooting hostages), and it has been made a viable option. It's not like in MGS1 where you are forced to gun-down a dozen soldiers pretty early on.Sure it would be nice for the game to acknowledge your achievement of this run type, but you can always print out a portrait of Big Boss and display it proudly in your trophy case upon completion.
>>12865690Pic related beats any metal gear ass.
>>12877317>zero guard killsSo does punching a guard "kill" him according to this counter?
>>12878390Punching a guard three times counts as a kill in Subsistence.https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/632694-metal-gear-solid-hd-collection/62726101
