If Ocarina of Time was released on PS1, would've it been a multidisc game? Like every time you go back to childhood era, would you have to change back to disc 1?
>>
Multiple discs are used to cater for audio files and FMV more than gameplay constraints usually, so it probably wouldn't be necessary considering how relatively limited OoT is in those areas.

You can literally fit Ocarina of Time onto a CD twenty times
>>

>>12866424
If OoT was designed to be on a disc it would have utilized the audio files and FMV. Realistically both child and adult maps would exist on every disc but child FMVs and adult FMVs would be split between discs. Basically once you watch all the cutscenes on one disc itll ask you to swap and you just continue using the next disc as you progress the story.
>>
>>12866472
This, if N64 was disc based they would have definitely added some Final Fantasy-esque cutscenes in the game. FF7 was out already and crazy popular.
>>
>>12866509
Well both games are over-hyped, extremely gay and only played by the most casual pedestrian faggots so they do have a lot in common regardless of being completely different games on completely different systems.

>>12866424
What if OoT time was actually a good game that was fun to replay over and over again? Wow that'd really be amazing!
>>
>>12866532
>>
>>12866424
But why? Multi-disc games were just a flex from devs; they put too much audio, FMV, and sometimes rooms. Also, you can't separate OOT into chunks evenly. Intro should be way bigger; same for the end game

If we assume the game had 3 discs because of cutscenes, voice lines, whatever, where would the logical cut offs be in? We need some cliffhangers.
-Disc 1: childhood, ends when Link pulls out the Master sword
-Disc 2: Forest, Fire and Water Temple, ends with the cutscene where Sheik is in Kakariko; Link gets attacked, fade to black
-Disc 3: rest of the game
>>
>>12866649
This is retarded fanfiction faggot shit
>>
>>12866424
A big detailed open-world game like Ocarina wouldn’t have been feasible with a 2x CD-ROM drive. N64 carts could stream data near-instantaneously, like RAM.
>>
>>12866806
>>12866549
>>
>>12866649
You can't do that without sacrificing the game's openness.
It would realistically be one or two discs (with the switchoff being the Master Sword). Two discs is a humongous amount of space for the time period; you can fit like a whole gigabyte on there. There are plenty of two disc PSX games.
>>
>>12866509
In fact, isn't that kind of why they decided to do a few pre rendered backgrounds, since they probably didn't need to otherwise besides the fact the ps1 made them vogue?
>>
>>12866424
Hyrule Field would be impossible, it would have to be broken down into like 15 parts with prerendered backgrounds
>>

It would have been quickly forgotten, just like many Disney games.

would've looked something like this
>>
>>12866989
That's sort of a random comparison, as a few games in your pic are quality, and remembered (mostly the 3d platformers), especially Toy Story 2.
But yeah, a few admittedly are definitely forgotten.
>>
>>12866424
WTF is this shit?!
>>
>>12866424
It still blows my mind that all of OoT was crammed into 32MB, including unused content.
>>
>>12866424
The multidisc ps1 games were that way due to FMV files, Ocarina has none of those, uses no redbook audio and only has a smattering of prerendered backgrounds, they would have to gone out of their way to make it a multidisc game.
>>

>>12867495
That shouldn't blow your mind unless you're extremely tech illiterate. How much space do you think a 32-bit binary takes up? Or an extremely low poly mesh? A MIDI sequence? They don't bundle DLL's on the n64 either.
>>
>>12866992
Yooooo is that adiboo and al-jazeera's revenge?

If OOT was on disc not only would it have been a single disc but they could have also included the master quest, which is what they eventually did.
>>
>>12866424
N64 games would not be multidisk. They're compressed so small that they easily fit on one CD and have a hundred megabytes left for better textures, sound and video.

The N64 had a stronger processor and GPU, but each game cartridge was only 8-32MB.
>>
>>12866985
>Hyrule Field would be impossible
There are lots of large levels in PS1. A large empty level is not different from a small dense level.
>>
>>12866821
OoT is nowhere as big as Driver 2. But yeah, for slow CD streaming to work you'd need to reduce the render distance in Hyrule Field, like Driver 2 did.

But it all comes down to what kind of graphical fidelity you're aiming. Armored Core and Jumping Flash managed to render huge levels without CD streaming, although with limited amount of assets.
>>
Would've sold a lot more.
>>
>>12866926
>>12866649
Are you sure those sections of the game are large enough datawise to warrant multiple discs? Ocarina fit on a 32mb cartridge, a single 700mb cd is more than enough. The filesize for OoT/Master Quest on the gamecube is only 139mb
>>
>>12866424
It couldn't be ported directly even with multiple discs. The view distance on the n64 is higher because of the superior RAM. You would need to remake the game so that hyrule field and a ton of the dungeon rooms were less sprawling.

Maybe you could make it work if you butchered the graphics so there is less RAM needed.

>PS1 can't do open environments
>>
>>12871903
That's not fair they used programming tricks and stuff. The point is N64 has better RAM.
>>
PSX couldn't have done it. It was already 15fps on N64. And N64 is 3x to 5.5x the power of PSX. Saturn was 2x the power of PSX. PSX was a POS.
>>
>>12869437
>Ocarina fit on a 32mb cartridge
Because it had to. With that limitation gone the game file would've definitely been bigger.
>>
>>12867959
This was a port of a game designed for a different system, not a game initially designed for this system. But you're too retarded to understand that apparently so you're welcome.

it wouldve flopped on ps1 due to being judged on its merits instead of loyalty from brand cultists
>>
>>12872286
lol wrong, you have piss poor judgement
>>
>>12866424
At the time it felt like there were a heap of open world like twisted metal but actual most are probably just small areas. I might be remembering Interstate 76 on pc which was adapted as Vigilante 8 for consoles.

>>12866992
You had the Die Hard city driving game

>>12871903
Driver 1 and 2, its confined to a city but Zelda is confined to an area too.

>>12871918
It would have to done in a different way like Ace Combat 3. I often thought that many early ps1 games were huge and open but got smaller as games had more detailed graphics.
>>
>>12871903
FF7-9 also had world maps.
>>
Ew oot but now with loading times
What would be the loading screen. Link rumaging though his bag or running though an empty void?
>>
>>12866424
Of course not. But you'll have to deal with load times and performance.
>>
>>12871903
The way OoT avoids having to use LOD replacements for distant backgrounds is a big deal and this is something the PS1 would not be able to replicate. OoT would absolutely have to be cut down significantly from what it is to be made to work, to the point of hardly being worth it given how tailored the game's features are to the system, like fast animation loading.
>>
>>12866424
>would've it been a multidisc game?
OOT fits on less than 1/10th of a single PS1 CD. So no.
>>
>>12866424
There's no CD audio music or prerendered cutscenes so no it would not have been multi disc.
>>
>>12866424
Fuuuuck oooooff already goddamn.

>>
It probably would have been the same as the new remake the same game but with voice acting
>>
>>12866424
>Like every time you go back to childhood era, would you have to change back to disc 1?
That would be really annoying. Most games that used multiple discs were linear or with limited backtracking. I would be a real chore to constantly swap between disc in a open world game.
>>
>>12872251
>This was a port
Not really, it's literally a N64 rom running on an emulator. The N64 decompilation used it, because it had debug symbols left.
I wonder why they didn't do more N64 games rerelases on Gamecube.
