I know Americans have GameFly, and some public libraries let you check out games (usually a couple generations old), and there used to be Redbox…but I’m wondering if other countries have anything similar, including old-school rental stores. Buying and selling used copies through CeX isn’t quite the same.

In my country game store rent you
>>12866793They still exist in Japan, but DVD rental is more common
>>12867520i admire their resistance to the "new is better" zeitgeist
>>12866793Game rentals were banned in my country because in the early days people were renting computer games/software and making copies and distributing it so the rental industry got shut down.>>12867520No they don't. See above. Also DVD rentals are basically dead and Tsutaya has been converting all of their stores.
>>12867535>No they don't. See above. Also DVD rentals are basically dead and Tsutaya has been converting all of their stores.Lying retard. GEO is everywhere along with mom and pop rental stores. People use them all the time
>>12866793They would come back in 1 day if the government passed a law ensuring royalties are paid from rental operations. Give the copyright holder the right to collect commercial rental royalties for 15 years after release. Cap it at like 100% since you shouldn't need more than half the rental price going to the publisher. This is an issue that is either solved with politics, or with "technology" i.e. DRM and I'm sick of the DRM so you have to give them some political concessions.
>>12867537Isn't Geo more a used goods store? That's what it looks like whenever I'm in one. I haven't seen rentals, but I could be wrong. There's also giant DVD stores sometimes, but I thought they were mostly porn.Like this one near my house: https://maps.app.goo.gl/4njowTKR3ozrjiY78?g_st=ac
>>12867537I live in Tokyo and I've never seen a Geo irl outside of the little ones in malls that sell used phones and used switch games. I'm pretty sure they don't rent anything. Also Tsutaya converting their stores is something you can just Google because they released a press release about it a few years ago.And don't call me a liar, you're a fucking retard who speaks out of his ass. You clearly don't know shit about this country. The fact that we don't have game rentals here is rather famous and usually gets blamed on Nintendo despite the fact that it happened before Nintendo even entered the industry.
Never was a thing really here. When I was a kid piracy was so huge you could buy fancy pirated software like AutoCad and Corel in some small stores and when you bought a new computer they had no problem with installing pirated windows as a bonus. Eventually they had to shut it down. Good times.
In my country there is an old law that says you can't rent something unless it's at least 9 months old. I think the delay used to be more than that too but I'm not sure. What this means is that rental was never a BIG thing, but ironically, it still managed to survive a long time, perhaps longer than in the US since blockbuster killed everyone else and then blockbuster died. The irony is that now the law extends to streaming, even if the streaming service owns the movie, meaning that you can watch The Mandalorian movie on Disney+ , but in my country we have to wait for 6 more months to do that. Nobody even fucking knows if it still helps physical sales at this point.
>>12867535>Game rentals were banned in my countryWhat cuntry is that larp-chan?
>>12867795la baguette de fromage.
>>12867846What is the point of this “in my country” shit anyway? Just say where you’re from.
>>12867846Japan
>>12866793GameFly still exists?
>>12867757I live in Chiba and I see people dropping stuff off in the return bin all the time>>12867546if you are a member you can rent most of their shit. even the consoles itself
>>12868029But rentals aren't banned in Japan. You're just a silly little larping parroting cunt.
>>12867862It's a passive aggressive way to artificially extend conversation and therefore thread length. It's explicitly vague to trick people into engaging with a trash thread, you can see how this thread is infested with bold claims and denials designed to extend conversation without arriving at a conclusion.
>>12866793is it not just larping at this point?
>>12866793yuphttps://store.playstation.com/
>>12869093>I sure love vaguepostingVideo Game Rentals are since the 80s despite the problem really being pirated Japanese PC games and not cartridges l, but Japan gotta Japan....
>>12869535cool story, except it's completely wrong. video game rentals are allowed in japan
>>12866793gamefly is still a thing?
I live in a hick ass town in murika (VA) and had redboxes pretty late. No actual rental stores, however, a tanning place still had rentals til a few years ago. A friend from ohio says his library has PS5/Series games along with last gen games. My library however does not have any vidya that I'm aware of. With all that being said, I haven't rented any media of the sort since mid to late 2000s.
>>12867542>They would come back in 1 day if the government passed a law ensuring royalties are paid from rental operations. This would literally do the exact opposite. The reason game rentals existed back then was because, after paying the cost to buy the physical game the first time, the original creators didn't have any right to demand more money. It's like if you buy a Toyota car. Toyota gets your money from the first purchase, but they have no right to demand anything afterwards if you sell the used car to someone else. Toyota can't keep demanding a cut for the re-sale of the car. It's why companies want to get rid of physical media and why physical media is so important. The companies want everyone to go digital so they can keep charging you over and over again for something you already own.
>>12869759>The companies want everyone to go digital so they can keep charging you over and over again for something you already own.I have never paid money for any game I have ever played mentioned on this board
>>12866793>some public libraries let you check out games (usually a couple generations old)no?My local library has 23 copies of wolverine for PS5 and all of them are currently out on rental (free rentals too). They have 5 to 30 copies for most newer released titles for Switch, switch 2, PS5 and whatever the current xbox is called.
>>12869549>i love being le hecking contrarian and vagueposty
>>12869759>Toyota can't keep demanding a cut for the re-sale of the carthey absolutely can if technical measures can lock your car down and be totally impenetrable to unauthorized repairs or modifications
>>12869759>Toyota can't keep demanding a cut for the re-sale of the car.for now.in fact, this is what manufacturers are trying to implement.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVwahLkjgd0https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1n0AI5aemUYhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-CprKqnfsqU
>>12870780there's nothing vague about it. it's a basic fact that you can rent games in japan.
>>12871048>impenetrable to unauthorized repairs or modificationsLook up John Deere company. They tried to lock down their farm equipment with software to prevent farmers from repairing it themselves cheaply and forcing them to bring the equipment in for repairs at an expensive John Deere dealership. People are already jail breaking their vehicles and tractors with new thirdparty firmware. If video game companies tried the same thing, then people will just find ways around it.
>>12866793>CeXholy fuck you're gay. Britbongs are fucking obsessed with their faggoted little overpriced CeX store
None of you faggots live in Japan, know Japanese, or have Japanese gfs.
>>12866793No. We did have a movie rental store in my town until a couple years ago but they stopped getting new games in the PS3 era.>>12867530I can see why it would make more sense there, with how home video is so expensive and people don't have as much space for hoarding things
>>12866793Yeah, it's called Playstation.

>>12866793PSN and Gamepass are active in my country. I went to a public library away from urban centers relatively recently in another state, and they do lend out video games as recent as new releases to the local residents. The covers appear to be reprints in the case, but I did not reside in that state so I didn't check out any to see if the discs were just copies of the master or the actual disc/cartridge.
