Is it true that Nintendo has always been seen as a console only the rich people buy? Sega was always seen as being for the poor and although Sony was more popular its always felt that people who prefer Nintendo have more money to spend on consoles why is that? why does everyone want a Nintendo for Christmas but only rich people can afford a Game Boy SNES NES or a Nintendo 64?
>>
>>12867768
I've literally never heard that ever.
>>
>>12867768
Home consoles, yes
Why? Because they were more expensive until the wii
Gameboy? Lol no everyone had one of those
>>
>>12867768
gay luigi?
>>
>>12867768
Anyone that was into videogames and only had 1 console per generation was and is objectively poor and was probably a games rentoid too. If this was your experience I can only assume you lived in some kind of ghetto country. Probably didn't even have 2 computers minimum (1 for work, 1 for messing around with).

Nintendo has raised the price of its current consoles again selling outdated hardware and software at exorbitant prices at least in the past the technology was competent for its time but Nintendo has always been seen as a brand for the wealthy they were the Apple of Gaming Sony only succeeded because its discs were easy to pirate
>>
>>12867768
It was in the UK in the 80s and early 90s due to distribution issues that made Nintendo stuff much more expensive than Sega stuff. A lot of those "Sonic kills Mario" drawings people like to post were made by kids that were only allowed to get Sega because Nintendo was too expensive.
>>
No one ever said that, what the fuck?
Did you look at the current switch 2 situation and suddenly think "it was always like this"?

This was only ever the case outside Japan and North America, for a few reasons:

* Nintendo was generally more expensive outside those regions (even before the market shift away from cartridges)

* Sega was the premier platform for licensed sports games, including FIFA

* Nintendo’s kid-friendly image was a turn-off for older audiences

* In late 80s / early 90s Europe, many households had powerful media-centric home computers like the Amiga and Atari ST instead of consoles, and piracy on those platforms was easy
>>
>Only rich people can afford a Game Boy
This confuses me, the game boy is literally the most poorfag console of all time to the point it was practically made for poorfags. Where did you get this idea that "Only the rich can afford the gameboy"?
>>
>>12867768
Where I lived we did see gameboys as kind of a luxury (If you had the chance to ask your parents for *a* videogame system then it had to be an SNES, or a 64/PSX if you were lucky). It was funny because pokemania was as rampant as anywhere else but barely anyone knew it came from a videogame.

Are you in a third world country, Eastern Europe or Hong Kong or some shit?
>>
>>12868337
I'm in Sri Lanka. Don't know if that counts as third world.
>>
I remember my friend's dad complaining about Sonic 3 being ÂŁ60. I don't remember much else from that time regarding prices of new games. If my parents bought me something I didn't ask how much it was. I'd occasionally buy used games with my own money and there wasn't much difference if any between SNES and MD.

Fast forward a generation and most of my friends had a N64 and some combination of Mario Kart, Smash, Goldeneye and Perfect Dark. No-one I knew who had a N64 had anything else. The rest of us who had PlayStations ended up with dozens of games and that's not counting copies. I remember prices of practically all N64 games being ÂŁ50 each and PlayStation games being around ÂŁ20, or up to ÂŁ30 for a brand new premium title.

That's when I started thinking of Nintendo as being expensive. That trend continued for the Gamecube, but the Wii started limiting the higher prices to first-party games and things are pretty much the same now.

Here in the US at least, everyone and their mother had a gameboy, even those who didn't have a home console had one because the Gameboy (and by extension, the Gameboy Color) was cheap as hell and had a diverse as hell library, there was a game for everyone on that thing, even a decent number of girly games, whether it was explicitly girly (like barbie or something) or just happened to appeal to girls mainly (like a pet raising game).

This board is fucking dead. Nintendo the richfag console? Jesus fucking Christ. Who the fuck makes bullet lists with * on 4chan?

How dare anyone's experience and perception of the past differ from mine
>>
>>12868728
This is my memory and I was 18 in '92. If anything, people who had a Genesis were often more rich because they got it when it was new. At least here in Canada, the marker that someone was poor is they only had one or the other. Virtually everyone had both if they were into gaming at all.
>>
If you were a poor kid back then in the early 90s your parents got you a sega genesis and if you were a rich kid your parents got you a super nintendo ive actually seen it happen to a few kids in my neighborhood back then, its a real true thing, parents that struggled to make money almost always picked the sega genesis for their kid
>>
>>12868728
I can't imagine paying 50 dollars for fucking 16bit games
>>
>>12867768
Maybe in third world shitholes like South America or Europe.
>>
>>12869164
Is this why Americans are so obsessed with Nintendo?
>>
>>12869168
Well the obsession is a different beast. Tendies get nostalgia baited hard by the Nintendo “universe” of games just like Disney adults do with Disney IP’s. It’s just something that sticks with them from their formative years.

>>
>>12868020
The fact tendies can be such revisionists is insane, they think the average person who lived through this time won't ever fact check their bullshit. Sonic rapes fagrio, btw
>>
>>12867768
>Is it true that Nintendo has always been seen as a console only the rich people buy?
Only in Brazil, where the SEGA System was more popular.
>>
>>12867768
maybe the N64, since its games and peripherals were expensive as fuck. then again i do remember a few poor-ish families with N64s.
i have noticed nowadays that some nintendo adults are spreading all kinds of weird bullshit based on what console you had back then, like "only kids in broken households had playstations."
>>
>>12869369
The N64 was technically an SGI console, so I can easily see why it was so expensive. Surprised Nintendo gambled on a relatively Western company back then.
>>
>>12869389
SGI was hot shit in the early 90s thanks to The Abyss, T2, and Jurassic Park. The final N64 hardware, while considerably cut down from the initial spec, was still way ahead of anything else at the time. No Japanese company would’ve been able to offer anything close.
>>
>>12869369
The N64 was pretty cheap, it's just the games being pricey, because cartridges
>>
>>12869403
IKR? It's so ahead of the curve that people are still finding ways to squeeze the N64's hardware to this day. As much as I like Rare's efforts, not even they were able to pull off some of the effects Factor 5 (and by extension, the homebrew community) were able to pull off.
>>
>>12869153
You wouldn't pay $40 (equivalent to $108 in 2026) for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde?
>>
That’s just a PC way of saying that Sega was for the blacks.
>>
>>12869483
That's why game rentals were so popular. Your typically gamer might get 4 or 5 new games in a year but the rest of the time you would be spending a few bucks to rent a game for the weekend. You just always hoped you didn't pick up something shitty like Airwolf or J&H
>>
shit like cd i was for rich people
people just forget cause it was shit
>>
>>12868368
yes it does pajeet
>>
>>12868668
Ikr
>>12868779
It's not that your "perception is different", it's that OP has an ignorant take on a board where every poster should be knowledgeable about retro gaming. It's annoying to come to a hobby board where half the posters sound like they wandered in off the street
>>
>>12867768
No. Thats just the snes, because genesis was cheaper. Gameboy was cheaper than the gamegear and N64 and gamecube were cheaper than the competition (until the dreamcast got discontinued and kb toys sold it for 50 bucks). wii too I guess but from wii onward nintendo was considered "doing its own thing".
>>
>>12869747
75% of retro gamers are transgender 17 year olds or 22 year old Instagram larpers now.
>>
>>12869747
So being "knowledgeable about retro gaming" means having read up on what gaming was like in your specific corner of the united states? You don't know what gaming was like before globalization.
>>
>>12869879
Not him, but where the heck did you grow up that this was actually the case that Nintendo was seen as a rich person's console compared to Sega? I've never even heard of that notion before.
>>
>>12869885
>I've never even heard of that notion before
Listen to yourself anon.
>>
>>12867768
Im a 6th generation kid so I'll give you all I know.

Gamecube was for autists and weebs
PS2 was for poor kids and brown kids
Xbox was for wealthy white douche kids
