What made Final Fantasy IV so innovative? It's a game praised very highly, maybe not as high as Chrono Trigger but many people treat this game as the one that changed everything, what aspects of it do you think changed the landscape?

It became far more story and character focused.

I thought FF2 was pretty story focused despite being a famicom game, I definitely like the story of that game a lot more than the later games. IV does do character development better than II though.

I think it was just a big step forward in doing a good job of providing that kind of game experience. Think about the use of character motifs in the music, the sudden (for the first time player obviously) plot twists, etc.

>the sudden (for the first time player obviously) plot twists, etc.
That's a good point, until IV none of the games really had anything akin to it. I thought Garland being Chaos was a plot twist but I'm not sure if it was meant to be.

atb cutscenes. that's the biggest one

I forget how much of a difference ATB made because I play so many old turn based RPGs, that's another good example anon.
>>

Yeah, I'd say it was a plot twist.
The scope of FFIV was quite large. The underground, the moon.
First one to use ATB. The new power of the SNES for the music must have been huge. FFIV in it's original form is also a difficult game, that's tightly paced. You really go through a lot in the game.

I was playing it a few years ago but my HDD got fucked and I lost my progress.

It's one of the shorter Final Fantasy games so it wouldn't really take you long to play through it again. It's a very straightforward game and the way the party constantly swaps out you never really need to bother grinding

I wouldn't know because I grew up in North America with North American games - except of course that this was the first SNES Final Fantasy game and I guess also the first SNES JRPG (that I ever encountered), which was a huge deal to me personally

I might be overlooking something, but I think FF4 is one of the first console RPGs where the protagonist has multiple fleshed-out love interests who feel like real characters. It came out over a full year before DQ5.

who would rydia's love interest be?

I have the impression FF wasn't just number go up, but it was very number go up, from I to III, because you had some sort of class customizability, and the lack of prediction devs had of what your party could do made it so it was harder than in IV to balance encounters. In IV, the dev knows which classes you are likely deploying at which time, enabling them to trap you into certain challenges more easily.
Maybe the ojective was to make the fights be challenging in different ways than just "grind this high", and also knew they could tell a story of their guys, instead of your guys. I think it's fondly remembered because it was probably the first time FF fans shared that kind of closer impression about a game, the characters and story was the same for everyone in a more involved way, due to the favors it did for storytelling.
Other games did that before, and even doing that didn't stop players,

I started with IX when it was the newest then played IV. I liked it.
I've played them all since and clearly see why it was a step up but IMO V-IX blow it out of the water SO hard that I have no interest in replaying it even 25 years later. Sumimasen, yo.

protagonist has one love interest, his best friend has unrequited feelings towards that love interest, and then 2 of the side characters have a flirtatious relationship with each other. FFIV is not a harem story.

I'm pretty sure edge knocked rydia up in the after years

i think its understated in how much more FF4 leaned into wacky gimmick bosses that just quietly became a staple for the series. even the MMOs revolve around boss fights where you have to do an <x> thing or else it instantly chimps out and auto-wipes you. FF3 kicked that off with the likes of Garuda and Odin naturally, while FF2 introduced a character-driven narrative, but FF4 sort of combines both design aspects into a fairly coherent and focused package

I've never heard anyone say it changed everything, but only that it marked a change in the series itself and maybe others wanted to make their games to be more like FF.

The story wasn't the big turning point, it was character development with you following the journey of Cecil and his growth as a person.
