More JRPGs need to have unique, weird environments like this.
>>12869767>Man, isn't that giant dead thing in the background cool? Please, ignore the long narrow railroad ahead of you
>>12869770Yeah fuck me for enjoying the environments in the games that I play.
>>12869767the surreal environments and music we r great. combat suckssomeone should use AI to make a combat overhaul. Import mechanics from g.u. add other stuff like a kingdom style quick spell menu, a dodge, parry, and the ability to control the other characters. or if not that, just give kite the ability to use every weapon
Cool! The flesh dungeon turns into a mechanical boss room!!
>>12869784That is essentially what I hope Z.E.R.O. ends up being like. Have combat more in line with G.U. but the atmosphere more like IMOQ. It would be Ludo.Has anyone reading this played LINK? How does that one stack up to IMOQ and GU? Maybe if ZERO does well that one will get an international release.
Forgot that you can see this nigga from the ground in the delta server.

>>12869780You could never accuse it of being subtle, at least
>>12869767That's a PS2 game?Looks like something between an N64 and Dreamcast game
>>12869834pretty sure dungeons and dragons were doing it before Evangelion
>>12869886It's a PS2 game and it costed over $200 when it was new.
>>12869886its one of those early ps2 games that started life on the ps1
>>12869834Beetles did it first.
>>12869892No it didn't...
>>12869767I have doubts about that aspect ratio.
>>12869829unnf
>>12869892>>12869961Is the joke that it got split into four games so you have to pay $200 to get the experience of one?
>>12869767>Retro games>Need to be more of XHow exactly? There are no more retro games to be made. It's all in the past.gb2 /v/

Normally I hate when people complain about clunkiness...but man, the original dothack quadrilogy almost makes it feel like they went out of their way to make it slow and sluggish.
>hear that Quarantine is one of the rarest PS2 games out there>it's just sitting on my shelf, still untouched because I never managed to beat vol 3.Also it's insane that there was only 2 years between Quarantine's release and Rebirth's, they don't even feel like they released in the same generation.
>>12871110I think they were trying to emulate the combat of an MMO with all of the menus. Xenoblade does a way better job of mimicking MMO tab target combat. That battle stylke would work for dot heck.
so whats the deal with this series is it worth playing? Im a big jrpg fan but just never picked this one up back in the day
>>12871503https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpOdFxTC8ZQYes but the combat in the first series (IMOQ) is very slow. The game is carried by it's narrative and world building. With the 2nd half of the franchise (G.U. vol 1 - 3) The story isn't as good but the gameplay is much better. They are all unique games in that they are single player rpgs that emulate a multiplayer experience. It's cool how the franchise spans games, manga and anime that are all interconnected. I'd recommend starting with the anime .hack//sign then following that up with .hack//infection. Technically you can also start with G.U. (that is what I did) and it goes on sale for 10$ on steam all of the time. But I feel as if you'd get more out of it by playing the older games first. Also, the new game Z.E.R.O. is confirmed to have ZERO connection to any previous entries in the franchise so maybe wait for that if you want a more modern experience.
>>12869767More JRPGs need to have gameplay, but then they would be ARPGs.
>>12870226Your patience being rewarded, if you have any.>>12869834Wasn't it tacitly excused, because Anno was copying Ultraman anyway, and because the character designer between them is the same?
>>12871494You're not wrong but at the same time the combat is not really the thing people liked about early, pre-WoW Japanese MMOs
Mecha, MECHA, MECHAAA, GRUNTY!!!
>>12871597I honestly don't know shit about older MMOs. I've played FF14 up to shadowbringer, some SMT Imagine, 2007 era Maplestory, and a few thousand hours of PSO2.PSO2 before NGS is probably the closest thing to a multiplayer version of G.U., except for maybe PSU.
>>12871601>explodes and flies off in a random direction
KICK KICK!! YOU KICKED ME!!GIVE GIVE!! GIVE YOU MONEY!!!
>>12871503The original quadrilogy is made unabashedly for a niche audience and does not care if you arent into it. The focus is on the workd more than any one individual character. The GU trilogy dumps that and says maybe a GAME should be fun to PLAY. However it is explicitly Haseo's story, it is not about the world.
>>12871614>workd World, I meant
>>12871614Z.E.R.O. would ideally find a middle ground between being niche and actually fun.
Considering the GU remasters aren't actually remasters but full on remakes made in Unity, why didn't anyone figure out how to do wacky shit like giving haseo all transformations in vol 1 or changing what characters are in cutscenes
>>12869767These were often added in as jokes usually to show how the game programmers felt about working and getting underpaid
These are probably the only anime-like games that I have a specific nostalgia for their dubs
>>12871815Haseo and SaSOOke are forever linked in my mind thanks to that voice acting.
>>12869767is that crappy end of evangelion reference? it must suck
>>12872107>ESL tripfag Please leave
>>12871597People liked the combat in those games a lot more than you give it credit for.
>>12869767Agreed.The game was meh, but going into the world and seeing that floating in the sky was pretty cool, made it more unique.to bad its always>we got this cool enviroment where we can put in ANYTHING>here's your generic fantasy castle yo>here's your two moons on an alien planet yo>here's your future dystopian city where its just some neon lights yo
>>12870886>in 5 yearsMake it 5 weeks
>>12869767>trapped in an MMO settingHard pass.
>>12872672That is only .hack//sign. SAO and Log Horizon are straight up rip offs.
>>12870886Until said-AI can recognize deliberate misspellings to appear human and reproduces that too. Even signing your posts with personal camera shots of your face, or timestamps on pieces of paper can be reproduced perfectly. The era of caring about whether or not it's an AI will cease to exist, and they will be considered normal things to interact with, almost like persons but not quite.
>>12873340This is actually something that the new .hack could touch upon.
>>12872545> neon lights yoanon the netslum m8!PRESENT TIME HAHAHAHAHHAHA
>>12873357PRESENT DAY HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAND YOU DON'T SEEM TO UNDERSTAND
>>12873340More like the population will lose interest in the internet as a socializing platform en masse. It will become nothing more than a storefront on your phone.Nobody likes AI, nobody wants to interact with it, and most of all nobody wants to be fooled by it. The small percentage of faggots who will pay money for it are never going to produce a profit, much less enough to justify even a single dedicated data center remaining operational or even being built after this year is up.Hell, the hardware manufacturers are already pivoting to selling their overstock that was meant for AI to robotics firms instead because they can see the vultures circling.
>>12871804Apparently if you use a Haseo that is not the Haseo model he should be for that scene during cutscenes, it breaks scripting.
>>12872096To me Haseo is easily Yuri's best role in terms of performance, he nailed what that character was going for.
>>12872672You're not trapped, the line "guess I'll log out and check my email" is a meme for a reason
>>12869767Is that Voldo
>>12873534Also I forgot to say that it's not really true that the games are remade in Unity. The games are still using the original proprietary engine for the PS2 versions, but Unity is wrapped around that. WHY would you put an engine around an engine, I don't know, maybe it makes it more easily compatible with modern hardware.
>>12873547Nta but tl;dr is PS2 games were made for a very specific architecture and if you tried to use the old engines as is (Nocturne HD is another example), you would have to re-architecture the entire fucking game to make it work. Unity is basically a cheat code that just slots in things where they should go. It's not always perfect but it's a hell of a lot less work.So no, your "unity remake/HD remaster" having different art direction you don't like oftentimes isn't because of Unity, it was the devs consciously doing that and thinking it unironically looks good.
>>12873540Ahhh yeah it does kinda look like Voldo
