The graphics of this generation were perfect video games shouldnt have advanced any further from this point the sixth generation is where everything became soulless
>>12871485the 5th gen was below the path of least resistance the insane memory and poly limitations weren't in line with how a dev would naturally create assets.
>>12871485Nahsixth gen is the perfect balance because graphics aren't yet realistic while far from being rudimentary.
>>12871610Correct. There is no significant improvement in graphics from ps2/gamecube/dreamcast era. Significant being that the graphics let you do things you could not before. PS3 could hit graphical fidelity levels that are basically the same as what we get today. Graphics are not the most important part of a video game.
The PS1/N64/Saturn was the last gen when a team of 1/2 programmers, a couple of artists and a musician could make a whole game. Sure it wasn't the easiest to work with the hardware limitations, but the player's expectations were low enough a team's first 3D game could become an international best seller if the gameplay was well made. The 6th gen was where teams started to get bloated. Also why western games struggled to be more than mediocre. Japan just let the job be hardware, hired minimally and expected everyone to sleep under their desk for a year. Innovation still occurred. The west just hired 50 guys who would be managed by 10 managers who would bikeshed everything until it was a renderware 20fps crapfest dripping with beige-itis.
>>12871632>Japan just let the job be hardwareI meant *harder*
>>12871485Graphics were better when it was SNES/Mega Drive 16 bit pixel sprites, actually.
>>12871485No. 3D becoming the "default" with 5th gen is what killed gaming for a lot of people.
>>12871485What would that even mean? That the companies that make graphic cards should have just shut down? Because that's what it would have to take. I don't think that's actually what you mean. I think you are just saying "I miss old games." but you are confused and trying to express it by talking like this. Like a child that's sad and doesn't know why.
>>12871632>handhelds never existed
>>12871649This. SNES was peak vidya aesthetics
>>12871945Yeah that's really frustrating that he didn't even acknowledge handhelds. Pokémon sold so many freaking copies, handhelds are just as relevant as any console.
>>12871485No thanks, the N64 graphics were just as nauseating as the PS1 graphics when it came to 3D. I'm glad Dreamcast helped break that mold in the 6th gen.
>>12871610Wow you can't see shitSuch improvement LMAO
>>12871485Mario 64 was probably the first entry in the full roam 3D space that actually did it correctly the first attempt. Even today it holds up incredibly well in presentation and feel. There is something about how smooth and clean the graphics are and that it isn't trying to aim for hyper realism that it somehow feels timeless.
6th gen is when it became possible to bring any game idea to life. Games like pikmin or musou became possible, for example, or horror games that were actually realistic and thus scary, that would've been impossible in the 5th gen. It's only after that that games began to only improve the graphics.
>>12871828>3D becoming the "default" with 5th gen is what killed gaming for a lot of peopleDozens!
>>12871485It's exactly the opposite. It was a local minimum, with better games both preceding and following it. I feel bad for people whose baby duck period coincided with this stage.
>>128716105th gen has terrible 3D graphics, but wasn't all 3D garbage. 6th gen is the worst gen because graphics had gotten as almost good as they ever needed to be, but hadn't yet realized that most 3D game designs suck ass and you need to deliberately simplify things to make a game good. Minecraft raped 6th gen.
SNES was peak
fifth gen and beyond was a regression to stop pursuing art and chasing the lowest common denominator of more polygons. 16 bit pixels are literally perfection.
>>12871485> perfectA thick layer of Vaseline near impossible to see through is what you consider "perfect"
>>12871649
>>12871485Nah, shut up. Those muddy textures and draw distances were atrocious, the wobbly polygons on the PS1 were just as bad. I don't know where to begin with the saturn, lmeyo.Ramp it up to dreamcast of gamecube graphics and I'll agree.
>>12873397wtf paulie plays guitar hero?
>>12871485>The graphics of this generation were perfect>says schizo spammer that takes screenshots from other websites, of games and consoles he's never played or ownedhardcore cringe
>>12873401Nah, that's Clarence
>>12873424he filtered me honestly
>>12871485Console wars are so retarded. I'd like everyone to be aware, the original Quake was released one day before Mario64 was, and the original Quake is a technological achievement that Nintendo has never even come close to surpassing. Bing bing wahoo indeed.
>>12873417Is "I have played games that look like Mario 64 before" such an implausible claim that you really need evidence to back it up?
>>12873417As opposed to what, booting up a rom and taking a screenshot every time I want to comment on a game I've played hundreds of times? Please show the folder you have filled with thousands of images from every game you've played that might be discussed on this board, I'd love to see it. Why are there retards like this everywhere you go? I bet on /tv/ there's some faggot saying you can only comment on a scene from a film if you upload a timestamped pic of you standing in front of your tv while the scene is playing.
>>12873417nice>>12873972>>12876908>when anons catch the spamming schizo retard, the mental collapse beginslmao. devastating news for the board's schizo retard.
>>12873930Yeah but can you beat Quake with half an A press and make 5 hour videos on YouTube about it? I thought so, checkmate mate
>>12871485correct, it's a computer making graphics and pretends to be nothing more. it's the SGI aesthetic
>>12877048>sgi aestheticno such thing. anyone above the age of 13 in 1995 can remember what graphics out of an SGI machine looked like. amazing graphics. no matter how many times we saw the letters SGI mentioned it added nothing. it became meaningless. they were just a partner that gave them heavily cost reduced tech for their ICs. SGI did sell machines for around $15k-$30k at this time that could do most things in real time. everyone was too poor for SGI "aesthetics".
>>12871485The initial shock and excitement in gaming, seeing this for the first time when coming from 2D. Is something that will never be experienced again.
