Does anybody actually like this shit? Why do sony persist with this shitty design? Are they too proud to admit they fucked it up the first time?
>>
Pretty sure it’s just a patent thing that lasted long enough to become part of the brand
>>
I do.
>>
It's good, but not as good as what Nintendo has.
>>
>>12871661
It's not as good as basically every other dpad. It's legitimately trash.

They probably kept it to favor the Dualshock but it got stuck there.
The superior type of directional buttons are the ones in the Genesis
>>
every single thread is set up as bait to talk about modern gaming

Thank you for stopping by, notretro autism police.

Nintendo hasn't made a good d-pad in ages though
>>
>>12871668
the xbox 360 pad is legitimately trash, the dualshock is ok.
>>
>>12871706
>the xbox 360 pad is legitimately trash
Ok that's one that's definitely worse, but dualshock dpad is not much better. And this is for a controller that doesn't treat it like a secondary input, a weapon switcher, for the dualshock this was the only directional input originally.
>>
I think it's the best, and I grew up with Nintendo only.
Less likely to accidentally hit a diagonal input.
>>
just checking: do you think its four separate buttons?
>>
>>12871732
Of course not. But a good dpad should let you rock your thumb in the grooce as well as tap inputs. Rocking on the dualshock feels like shit.
>>
>>12871732
>do you think its four separate buttons?
No, it's a membrane underneath, but the separation does prevent accidental inputs slightly. What kind of games are you playing where you "rock your thumb" and need a one-piece D-Pad circle? It's not hard to do diagonals on the DualShock when you need to.
>>
>>12871650
meh, better than the xboxs'

Eeeeh... maybe. At least it doesn't register as many false diagonals as the Wii Classic / Classic Pro controllers, nor does it feel as bad as the Switch 1/2 Pro controllers. But it's still far, far from a SNES controller. The last great D-pad made by Nintendo was the SNES Mini controller. I use with my Wii U all the time over the Wii U Pro or GamePad.
>>
>>12871748
>need a one-piece D-Pad circle?
You can rock your thumb on literally any dpad but the dualshock. And its not like you *need* it, but if you don't find being able to glide your thumb around the pad both useful and pleasurable, I don't know what to tell you. Cope all you want, but it's a bad design and 90% of standard cross or round dpads shit on it.
>>
>>12871650
because nintendo owns the patent
>>
>>12871748
>it's a membrane underneath
Not on DS1 it ain’t
>>
>>12871736
>rocking the d-pad

Like a monkey? That's not how you play videogames.
>>
>>12871650
It's legitimately one of the main reasons I got away from Sony consoles in the end. Playing Monster Hunter on a PSP pad was absolute torture. And any fighting game feels like it's ripping your thumb apart on no time.
>>
>>12871650
i have no idea what youre talking about. pretty much ever first party dpad was fine until maybe the gamecube's retarded one for ants

>Playing Monster Hunter on a PSP pad was absolute torture
That's a retarded example, using the d-pad for the camera isn't a big deal, you'd have had to do the claw no matter how good the d-pad was.

You're a faggot for using that example.

Sony also created the absolute best d-pad in gaming history and then never used it again.
>>
>>12871650
I never got the hate for it, it's pretty close to Nintendo's and Sony keeps improving it, it's near perfect nowadays.
>>
>>12871692
Yes they have
>>
>>12871650
the d-pad was patented for a LONG time so they had to do this or what the genesis did. as usual if there's some shitty gaming decision that doesn't make a lot of sense, blame nintendo.
>>
>>12871650
How is it different than this?

>>12871650
it's good.
the dpad is a single piece and it has a separate piece to pivot into.
the aesthetic design changed with the dualshock 4, but it remains the same mechanically.
>>
>>12871692
I like the NSO Snes controller dpad.
>>
>>12871650
No everybody actually hated Playstation. They just kept buying Sony consoles as a joke
>>
>>12873615
This so much this. My favorite YouTuber --who insists he's neutral and I believe him, despite him covering Nintendo 90% of the time-- told me so.
>>
>>12873615
>>12874012
Unironically I grew to kinda hate Sony, their hardware was good but always so flimsy. I went through like 5 PS1s and 3 PS2s in the end and still have 3 half working PSPs in addition to the one I keep limping along.

I have little love for Nintendo though, their hardware is usually well made but I don't like their first party stuff as well. It was actually the MS response to the 360 red ring fiasco that made me get one over a PS3 and was very happy with it.
>>
>>12873601
snoy here
PS d-pad isn't good. I remember playing Tomb Raider and Duke Nukem TTK with the original non-dualshock PS controller and my fingers started to hurt.
>>
>>12875654
I remember my thumb hurting when playing fighting games but I think that's just the texture. With the glossy d-pad from PSP, Vita and Dual-sense, I haven't had any problems.
>>
It is functional but it hurt the fingers, I had to wrap my shirt around my finger to play multiplayer games like fighting and sports. The PSP was functionally the same but mich more pleasant.
On the other hand Nintendo created the best D Pad on a controller with 6 face buttons. But it was the N64 and had almost no 2D games. And then they decided to make the D Pad tiny ever since
>>

>>12871670
cringe
>>
Am i just incorrect? I much prefer separate blades for clean inputs of 2d movement and menuing which is like all you use the dpad for anyways
I suppose 360 input for fighters is bad but use the stick or a fight pad you goofy fuck
>>
the snes dpad is the best
>>
>>12871650
Worse than Nintendo, better than Xbox
>>
>>12873480
If a d-pad has a big hole in the middle then it's far from perfect.

>>12873506
So they could have copied the Genesis or invented some other design that didn't put a stupid hole in the middle, and then they chose not to because they wanted to do a bad job instead of a good job? No that is Sony's fault.
>>
>>12875763
Yes, you are incorrect. It should be very easy and very comfortable for you to do all that with a SNES-style d-pad. If the central gap is somehow helping you with it then there is something wrong with your body. Go to a gaming-positive doctor to get yourself checked out.
>>
>>12871650
>Are they too proud to admit they fucked it up

I doubt it. Big corporations are just not sane entities. People sometimes say they exist only to increase profit but even that's not really true, although it works well in some contexts as a model for their functioning - but in reality they are mindless cancerous blobs that, a lot of the time, do random crap for no clear reason at all.

This seems like a QWERTY keyboard situation: Somebody comes up with an okay design that is obviously inferior to some alternatives, it gets embedded in a lot of people's habits and procedures and manufacturing hardware, and no one person or organization ever happens to possess both the desire and the power to change it, so it never gets changed and almost everybody exposed to it just mindlessly tolerates it while focusing their thoughts on other, more pressing matters.

It's actually a good d-pad. Cope & seethe.
