Who remembers this?
>eurojankthanks but no thanks
Trollderie, Trollderat, Trollderoot, this thread is kaput
>>12872581>>12872636
I liked this stage because it felt really cool and dynamic with all the ups and downs even though it's basically a repeating cg scene and you're really just moving side to side
I used to watch the Slovakian TV show Maxihra. It was also played by callers but they would play Crash Bandicoot mostly. Hugo wasn't that hot.Always wondered how bad the lag was, I heard it was actually not THAT bad.
>>12872715I heard they weren't actually directly controlling it they had someone in production press the actual controller based on the inputs sent by the kids
>>12872479Based thread, fuck ameritroonsHere in Portugal people used to call into a show to play Hugo live https://youtu.be/mD6ZBZfm94AI also played shit loads of Hugo games on PS2, agent Hugo was based af
I watched the show all the time but never called
The franchise is a clusterfuck of sequels, compilations and ports. What's THE Hugo game one should play?
Me and a friend used to watch the show all the time (Germany) and we always wondered if callers really controlled Hugo with their phones. Couldn't really imagine it. I never played any of the games, though.
>>12872730>donkey kong themeis this legal?
>>12872830Crash Bandicoot
>>12872729>>12872832There was no human ghost player involved, the game actually reacted directly to the sound of the caller's telephone's number keys:>For Hugo and its related television program projects, ITE made the custom-built computer system named ITE 3000. It was able to convert any push-button telephone's dual-tone multi-frequency signaling (DTMF) into control commands for the characters in the game, allowing the callers to remotely interact with the action on TV from their homes during the live broadcast.>This complex and difficult to use system was based on two Amiga 3000 computers combined with a new audio control system, MIDI sampler, and other hardware, all of which reportedly cost $75,000Kinda crazy that they went through all that technological hassle when they could have just have some dude move Hugo instead. Maybe they wanted to make sure that people won't accuse them of scamming the players, or maybe they simply wanted to build that contraption just because it's a pretty cool concept.
>>12872715>>12872832wtf, didn't know that other countries also had it as a TV show. I remember watching it in 90s/00s in Turkey, but never called because I was afraid of the phone bill. The TV host was also famous, and many millennials still have nostalgia about this TV show.
>>12873106That is why i think Hugo is interesting as a game character. I see people say the games were based on the show, but really the video game aspect was the entire original concept that everything else was built around. Hugo didn't start on consoles or arcades or microcomputers, he was just this entirely original separate platform of sorts he appeared on.(i guess you could argue his birth hardware was the Amiga)
>>12872479I played this euro game on my SS1 recentlyNot bad
>>12872479
how do you tell which one is right? is it just random?
>>12873106I'm pretty sure that it was just to avoid any possible accusations and legal bullshit.
I was between 4 and 6 years old when this aired in my country and I still remember it vividlysuper weird how different countries had it at completely different dates, some probably got games the others didn't
>>12873145>and many millennials still have nostalgia about this TV showYes. That's pretty much universal. It was just incredibly comfy. I heard in Finland they also had their own version.
>>12872479Yes with Carmen Sevilla and Agustin Bravo in Telecupon but that was 30 years ago.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxK535G6XtMhttps://www.youtube.com/shorts/1R3pwI7iu0g?cbrd=1
>>12872479i remembered indians shill it for some reason...
>>12872830Hugo 2 if you want the tv-show experience (though the show looked much better).everything after that is identity crisis Hugo where they tried every genre to see what sticks.>>12873101ironically yes, Hugo was a proto-crash of sorts but then came full circle with Hugo: quest for the sunstones where it became a poor imitation of Crash instead.
>>12873714>(though the show looked much better)why is that?
>>12872479tolga abiiiii
>>12873913the original ran on an ITE 3000, built by the company that developed Hugo.I guess you can look at it as the "arcade original" and the ps1/DOS version as the home conversion, it's a good port though mind you, you can judge yourself by looking at archived footage from the Hugo shows and compare each minigame. Some minigames look the same while others have more environmental detail.
>>12872581>t:Go play your wokeshit, mutt.
>>12872829I remember how some dumb kid called there with a rotary phone once. That went well.
>>12873995is there no public emulatable version of the true original?
>>12874020this might be it>https://github.com/gzalo/hugo-rethere was also a Amiga port that looks pretty identical but doesn't have all the minigames
>>12873145lol, it seems that Hugo was something else in Germany.>In Germany, Austria, and Switzerland (the most significant program being in Germany), Die Hugo-Show,[118] scored with techno music,[119] would draw up to 200,000 phone calls every day at its peak, achieving a 40% viewer share in its target age of 3–13 with its audience of 700,000 in Germany and the number of callers sometimes exceeding 60,000 per show.[13][53] It used a virtual reality-like studio and the "Hugomobile" van for live gameplay broadcasting all around the country in the Das Hugo-Mobil edition,[80] becoming a cult show.[120] The German version of Hugo won a Golden Cable award in 1995 for "Best Children's Program".[50] Several celebrity musician guests occasionally appeared the show, including Masterboy.I don't remember celebrities appearing on the show.
Id rather hold on to the memories of the show than actually playing this for the first time and realize just how shit it actually is
>>12873145Hugo was pretty popular in various european countries. Hungary had a program where you could play NES Super Mario through the phone, they also had domino and gomoku and probably a bunch of others I forgot but those required telling the operator about your next move and they inputted it live.
>>12874074We also had a state of the art virtual studio with a virtual motion captured Hugo, not a puppet.
I wanted to call in so bad but my mom never let me
>>12875150Same. Really fucking wanted that snes.
>>12873145Everyone did, it's the TV show the character is primarily known from.
>>12873304Completely random. Typical Euro game design (fuck you Monty Mole)
I gotta get me a 'miga to relive the olden days. Playing 'ugo. Reminds me of when I'm a wee lad going to the pie shop with me mum
>>12872479I vaguely remember one that used to air on the German TV channel Super RTL, but my memory is pretty hazy, and I have no idea how to find a video of it online.
>>12878609It aired on Kabel1, not Super RTL. I also thought it was Super RTL, but after looking it up it turned out that I misremembered that too.>I have no idea how to find a video of it onlineThis channel uploaded a whole bunch of videos:https://www.youtube.com/@DIEHUGOSHOWAnd here's a vid of what this anon >>12874074 mentioned, Hugo Show with a celebrity guest and a motion-captured Hugo:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pBW1mR3FAoDJ Bobo's face looked even more retarded back then that it does nowadays kek.
