How has your taste in adventure games changed over time? For me, back in the day, I of course did the equivalent of the "top rated rotten tomatoes movies" equivalent for adventure games and I played through all the Lucas Arts classics (Monkey Island, Sam & Max, Day of the Tentacle) but my first two adventure games ever were actually Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers and then a hilarious "we removed all the cutscenes and all NPC character models" game-rip of Nightlong and maybe Neverhood was the first game I actually finished as a kid without a guide. Now that my nostalgia faded away, my top 10 is:1) Day of the Tentacle2) Jack Orlando: A Cinematic Adventure - unironically a more entertaining comedy than the above and all other Lucas Arts comedy adventure games3) The Last Express - it's been 15 or more years since I last played but I still remember all the optional missable content that you are rewarded with if you explore the game, it's probably the best designed "limited amount of locations" (due the train setting) adventure game ever made, they managed to get the most out of it4) Harvester - I remember reading about it in gaming magazines how it was the scariest and goriest game of all time, and it is partially true, but nowadays it's the second most comedically entertaining game on the list5) Gabriel Knight: The Beast Within6) Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers - yes, I like the FMV game more these days7) Sanitarium8) Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge9) Neverhood10) The Black MirrorAlso, I sometimes think to myself>RPGs get /vrpg/>strategy games get /vst/>adventure games don't get /vad/>adventure games don't even have a /vag/ general on /vg/But then I remember, there are almost no good adventure games made outside of the /vr/ years except Disco Elysium but it's controversial to say it's a point and click adventure game with RPG elements.
Some notable games I used to like but don't like as much these days>the Space Quest seriesI think I just liked the early games because of the pixel graphics and the typing interface.>the Broken Sword seriesThe first two games here used to be my favorites as a kid because I really liked 2D drawn graphics at the time,>Grim FandangoNever liked it, even though I tried to get into it twice at different points in my life.>Myst/RivenGenuinely don't get what people saw in these. I tried playing one of the Myst games as a kid and died of boredom.>Beneath a Steel SkyAs a kid, for some reason I thought it was darker/grittier than it really was.
>>12872992>But then I remember, there are almost no good adventure games made outside of the /vr/ yearsAll I played were the modern Sam & Max trilogy and I loved those games. Trying to get into the genre later. Will probably start with the retro Sam & Max.
>>12872992>muh top rated Rotten TomatoesHonestly a masterstroke of propaganda.
>>12873051I'd say using Rotten Tomatoes is slightly funnier than the standard imdb. I remember when I did it myself I just ranked the movies that had 100% at the time, because the site doesn't advertise well that this includes movies that had ~10 reviews by critics only that everyone rated positively (anything above a 5) and therefore = 100%. Ended up watching obscure "l'artiste" garbo no one else probably even watched, like Afghan Star.
>>12872992>How has your taste in adventure games changed over time?I care more about the puzzles being good now than I did as a kid. I used to just see them as obstacles to experiencing the game's story and world. Now I almost see cutscenes as obstacles to the puzzles, though best is if all parts are good ofc.I recently beat Kyrandia 3 and the puzzles were almost as bad as Kyrandia 1. Which is honestly impressive considering how good and logical Kyrandia 2 was, probably a top 10 adventure game for me.
>>12872992fuck motherfucking Sierra, leisure suit larfy is for fags anywayHonk if you love pussy!
>>12872992When I was a kid in the 90's, I didn't even know they existed, except for the odd encounter on my Genesis every now and then and thought they sucked. Then as a teen in the 2000's I was trying to be cool and edgy and just regurgitated Old Man Jenkins' opinions on them thinking I was clever. Then as an adult I tried them and played them and thought they were the best thing ever and spammed them. Now as an older adult, I think they're a very unique genre of video game with their own identity and should have a place within the canon of video games historically, and should be made more of in the future to create more balance between SCHUT and SPEED and RUN games.Adventure games literally, unironically, BUILT the video game medium as a whole, from titles like Zork which inspired countless people, to titles like King's Quest which inspired by countless video games, to titles from LucasArts which told incredibly memorable stories. There's a pretty high level point and click adventure horror game releasing at the end of this coming week, called Tenebris Somnia.https://store.steampowered.com/app/2121510/Tenebris_Somnia/Yes, fuck you, I know it's not retro, but it's still on-topic for the thread. It's probably the one game I've been looking forward to all year.

>>12873007>Grim FandangoSame anon, I've tried to get into it a couple of times and it just didn't click. Love all the other Lucasarts ones though, for some reason it's just that.
>>12873550>Primordia?Yeah okay I'll give you that one, for some reason I thought it released a bit earlier than 2012. But I still wouldn't put it on my top 10. It's just a better Beneath a Steel Sky to me.>Dropsy?Tried that recently, massive disappointment. "The creepy clown is actually wholesome chungus" - what a stupid plot twist.>Amnesia The Dark Descent?Stop funnin' around.
>>12873863>what a stupid plot twistIt's not a plot twist, it's the basis of the fucking game.>AmnesiaAdventure games don't have to be point and click to be adventure games, dork.
>>12874115>Adventure games don't have to be point and click to be adventure games, dork.Having a few puzzles doesn't mean it's an adventure game, just like having a few RPG-like features doesn't make a shooter from the "shooter with upgradeable weapons / attacks" era an RPG.You can have...Text adventure games, like The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.Keyboard adventure games, like Grim Fandango or The Escape from Monkey Island.First person adventure games, like The Witness. And maybe the cut off / most murky example would be "interactive movie" games, like The Walking Dead, or David Cage slop.I say the last one is borderline because, to me, if it's demanding too much input from the player all the time, it's no longer an adventure game. A proper adventure game should, regardless of the interface, mostly require mental attention rather than quick reflexes. If it requires careful hand eye coordination (i.e. for stealth segments) or fast and accurate pointing and clicking (i.e. for shooting/slashing) or precisely timed button pressing (i.e. for jumping) it's no longer an adventure game, it is an action-adventure. If Amnesia were an adventure game, then so is Resident Evil. Both are called survival horror games, but that's just a specific flavor of action adventures. Walking Dead and Cage slop does have QTEs but they're primitive enough and advertised well in advance that they're no different than timed puzzles where you have a very short time to pick something from your inventory/click something. Some of the Space Quest games also require very careful movement at points to not die during the movement, but that's more of a bad design rather than "and here we get the players blood pumping".On the other hand, I would be very much willing to let any visual novel which cannot be finished just by [fast] forwarding (and maybe picking one of three buttons five times per game) be considered an adventure game. So Ace Attorney OK, FSN not OK. But that's controversial.
>>12874270>If Amnesia were an adventure game, then so is Resident Evil.Amnesia doesn't revolve around combat. Resident Evil does. There aren't many requirements for a game to be considered an adventure game, but combat being a primary gameplay facet is one of them, and it negates it immediately. The same way Contra is not an adventure game.>Text adventure games, like The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.>Keyboard adventure games, like Grim Fandango or The Escape from Monkey Island.>First person adventure games, like The Witness. All of which are Adventure games.>but that's more of a bad design rather thanIt's only bad design if you're a faggot.
For me it's the original Black Mirror. It's just good.
basically sour grapes, crabs in a bucket. the amount of writing and story material you need to not just sit through but heavily engage with for puzzles makes me very critical in that area and I find the vast majority of properties just don't hold interest for me. Like if I would change the channel of its movie equivalent I'm probably not going to play it. something like the first gabriel knight that combines a decent amount of edge with fun gameplay might as well be a unicorn.
Riven is the GOAT
>>12874338>basically sour grapes, crabs in a bucket.I don't see how this relates at all to the rest of your post. But either way, I don't need a strong story to hold my interest in an adventure game. In fact, in some moments, I almost wish it didn't have such a strong story for some because I feel like the gameplay just gets in the way and it would be better suited to being a tv show or a movie. Kind of why I ended up disliking Grim Fandango. It had a super interesting world, characters, and story, and I kept getting aggravated at all the cryptic puzzles that were stalling me from getting more story.

>>12874419by fun gameplay I don't necessarily mean just challenging puzzles but world interactivity. the massive cutdown in interaction in a game like the beast within for example was a disappointment.

>>12874523My girlfriend is a woman. She only likes the Broken Sword games and Monkey Island games because it has protagonists who have girlfriends.
>>12874276>All of which are Adventure games.Wow, really? So you mean they are adventure games, which is exactly what I said three times in all three of the lines you quoted?>It's only bad design if you're a faggot.'k I'm guessing this is some braindead contrarian AI bot.> but combat being a primary gameplay facet is one of themMonkey Island 1-2 have sword insult combat, Monkey Island 3 has ship combat, and Monkey Island 4 has Monkey Kombat. This is what happens when you want to be a special snowflake and add "combat" into your shitty definition of a genre, now you have to cope and seethe. Meanwhile, my definition was and still remains flawless.
>>12874781>'k I'm guessing this is some braindead contrarian AI bot.Or maybe you're just a stupid faggot who needs his hand held. Deaths in Sierra games largely revolve around replayability. Instead of walking from Point A to Point B, you need to create tactics to avoid death. Then there are the puzzles where movement can cause death. And since you have save-anywhere, and autosaves built into SCUMMVM which saves your game every 5 minutes anyway, there is literally zero reason to complain about it, unless you're just a shitter.>Monkey Island 1-4None of these games have combat as a primary facet of gameplay. By "primary facet," I mean that the game consistently revolves around engaging in, managing, and progressing through combat encounters as a central gameplay loop, rather than combat appearing only as an occasional mechanic or isolated sequence within a broader adventure-focused experience.> This is what happens when you want to be a special snowflake and add "combat" into your shitty definition of a genreNothing happens, since you're just a retard who doesn't know how to read.>Meanwhile, my definition was and still remains flawless.HAH, more like you're a stupid faggot whose never played an adventure game in his life except SOMI.>Dreamfall The Longest Journeystealth sequences requiring timed movement, as well as melee combat involving attacks and blocks.>Full Throttlemotorcycle combat and other action-oriented sequences>Phantasmagoriaincludes timed, reaction-based sequences and dangerous encounters>Broken Sword the Sleeping DragonRequires stealth, careful movement, ledge traversal, and timed interactionsAll of which are not adventure games under your criteria. They still fall under adventure games within MY criteria however.
>>12873550>Amnesia The Dark DescentI only played the demo long time ago, does it actually have good puzzles? I thought it was just exploration, hiding from monsters, and maybe a few puzzles like in Ico where you're pulling levers and shit.

used to think broken sword was the shit, replayed it and it was ass. >>12875358If you want a grounded story then I would actually recommend The Black Mirror, it's mostly grounded with some relatively minimal fantasy elements. Gabriel Knight games are a bit more campy and putting too much into the voodoo/Germany/Jesus basket respectively and have easy to see plot twists. Sanitarium's twists caught me off guard, even though they're obvious in retrospect but it's the most fantasy of them all.

how do tourists like this even find their way onto /vr/? seems like it was born after the /vr/ cut off point
In the 90s the expectation for the genre was that the games should be comedic, and apart from the occasional edgefest like Harvester and Phantasmagoria, most games were. Every Lucasarts adventure was jokey with the notable exception of The Dig. As a kid I was content with that situation, having laughed at the humour in Monkey Island and its contempararies. I suppose I was in the right age group for it.These days the humour in those games irritates me. Someone above said that when they were a kid, Beneath A Steel Sky seemed more gritty than it really was. Well, that's probably because Gibbons' artwork is at variance with the narrative elements. The game looks like bleak, dystopian sci-fi, but the writing and voice acting belong to a Saturday morning kids' cartoon. That doesn't work well, and it would be better if all its aspects were facing in the same direction, preferably towards dystopian sci-fi. Broken Sword has a similar problem: the artwork and music give the game an air of class and maturity, but they're undermined when you engage in dialogue and find that everyone is a broad caricature with a silly voice. So this is how my tastes have changed: I've gone off the humour in old adventures and I prefer a serious tone now. Technobabylon pissed me off because it was always trying to be funny in that tiresome 90s way.
