Almost finishing this. Despite some retarded design choices (not being able to farm for 2 seasons) and barely having any content after the first year, I enjoyed it.Should I play 64 or back to nature next?
>>12873207You could try the Game Boy ones. Not the first one, it's basically just a lite version of the SNES one. 3 has a girl mode where you play as your live-in waifu and also answers the question "What if the guy from Harvest Moon was absolutely retarded?".
>>12873207I've been having a lot of fun with Rune Factory 4 Special.
sucks stardew valley ripped off everything about harvest moon and somehow became massively popular, fuck that guy he ruined cute farm sims forever
>>12873317To be fair, he's said in an interview before that he hates Stardew Valley too lolBut anyway, I thought the drama was that it was Harvest Moon's fault as well? I don't remember, but there was a reason behind the original franchise splitting into 2: "Harvest Moon" and "Story of Seasons"
>>12873317The harvest moon devs ruined it by being too incompetent, stardew got popular because there was a demand for farming games. With that said, I have no interest in playing stardew because its a forever game with a trillion things to do. The endings depending on how well you do in the 3 years were what interested me in playing harvest moon. Also stardew is a tumblr game.
>>1287320764 is amazing, a big step up
>>12873321>there was a reason behind the original franchise splitting into 2: "Harvest Moon" and "Story of Seasons"The Bokujō Monogatari games were originally published in English by Natsume as Harvest Moon. When the developer switched to a different overseas publisher, Natsume still owned the name Harvest Moon and tried to cash in by selling their own (worse) games using the existing franchise title. The original game series is now being published as Story of Seasons.
>>12873349Thank you.Guess I was wrong then, it had nothing to do with Stardew Valley ending up as the more popular series.
>>12873317As someone who grew up with HM for the SNES, GB, and then the 64, the series pretty much stagnated in the hands of the devs and then wherever the license wound up. SV at least earns its reputation by adding a lot to the existing systems in the game while keeping the core mostly the same.Right now, the only Harvest Moon I'd go back and play is the original GB one. The original SNES release is entirely frontloaded for the first two seasons in year 1, and 64 adds a few things but is still pretty shallow. GB HM is pretty much a straight up, no frills farming sim throughout the entire year and great in short bursts, something even Stardew doesn't really get right.
>>12873529Which GB game? There's 3 of them
>>12873378No it had nothing to do with Stardew. The split happened before Stardew existed.
I played a bit of BtN on Playstation and 64 looks really similar. What are the major differences?
>>12873708He means the first one. He's right about it being the "purest" one, in that the only thing you can do is farm. No waifus, no villager friends, no mini games. I don't think there are even holidays. It's better for that than the original, but that's it.
>>12873331>I have no interest in playing stardew because its a forever game with a trillion things to do. The endings depending on how well you do in the 3 years were what interested me in playing harvest moon.Even Harvest Moon lasts too long for my liking. It gets very repetitive once you have your farm up and running. I've never actually finished any Harvest Moon game because I just get bored having a perfectly optimized farm with nothing to do but repeat the exact same motions every single day for another year and a half.
>>12873708He literally said "the original GB game." Do you not know that original means first?
>>12873708>>12873946Yeah, the first for GB. Because it's so focused on the farming aspect and there's no long term interpersonal relationships to juggle like HM or skill/event progression like SV, it's easy to pick up the game and get right back to farming then take a break 5-10 minutes later when you start the next day. In this way, it could be thought of as a very early predecessor to things like Universal Paperclips or other sort of incremental games, possibly even a very, very simplified Factorio.I'm not saying HM should've went that route, but having an offshoot of the series that leaned into it would've been nice. Farm cash crops for cash, invest in better tools and more seeds, make more money to improve your farm, it's really all you need.
Are these games as boring as they look? I'm not hating on those of you who like these games, I've just never understood the appeal of games that feel like a job. Animal Crossing getting as popular as it did is baffling to me.
>>12874941>Are these games as boring as they look?Yes, if you don't see the appeal just by looking at them, they're simply not for you
>>12874941At least Harvest Moon has actual game mechanics and win/loss conditions, as opposed to Animal Crossing where you just endlessly grind for decorations with no stakes so you can dress up your island like a dollhouse and do literally nothing functional with any of it.
>>12875531>Harvest Moon has actual game mechanics and win/loss conditionsNo. Just no.The loss condition in Harvest Moon is that you must refuse to engage with the game on purpose. There are no practical stakes, you just can't lose by accident.
>>12875731>you just can't lose by accident. As opposed to Animal Crossing where you just can't lose. Ever. For any reason. Even if you TRIED.The floor may be low in Harvest Moon, but at least it HAS a floor. And a ceiling. And boundaries in general that require your attention and effort to remain within. Animal Crossing has none of that, it's barely even a game.
>>12875731"Losing" is highly unlikely to ever happen if you're playing normally, but there's some challenge in things like getting the Party Picture in HM64. That had super strict requirements.
>>12874941>I've just never understood the appeal of games that feel like a jobGrinding on a farmyard to improve your soil quality to improve your crops while crafting better farm tools is more relaxing to me than grinding by fighting monsters to raise your party's levels to 9999 to kill God.
>>12873341this. 64 is the only answer. and yes i have 50 hours in mineral town. only snes and 64 have good sprites
>>12876583RPGs are boring too, though I'll admit that I've actually played a few despite this. I even tried an MMO briefly, and hated it, because it was the epitome of "feels like a job."
