It's still one of sickest game intros ever.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzEj4Gq7fT4Sound on.
>>12874303Purdy good. I think original extended Flashback intro has it beat though.
>>12874303luv me some flat-shaded spaceshipshttps://youtu.be/MrQsQvRzEEMhttps://youtu.be/HlFvI24TdNMhttps://youtu.be/AEeLaDga56A
Frontier: First Encounters is what this game was meant to be. Actual plots and storylines, way more ships and shit to do, enhanced graphics and sound. But the thing came out just ahead of the 3D accelerated craze, and it actually takes a pretty powerful computer to run it because it's all software rendered. I have tried to get it working in Dosbox, -x, and -staging and it always lags and stutters no matter what I try. This is one of those games where you legitimately need a powerful, DOS retro computer to run it properly. Or I guess you could just run the modern Windows port, which has enhanced graphics and 3D acceleration too.Anyway if you loved, Frontier, you will like FFE even more.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2tHfOTiFAs
>>12874335I don't like the fact that enemy ships don't exist before they spawn next to you in combat. Most of the new ships were pretty retarded too.
>>12874303Can't wait for the inevitable recomp. GL Frontier gave us a taste of what HD vector graphics Elite could be.
>>12874303I remember running this on my Amiga 500 and it being a 10 FPS slideshow but I persevered because of its epic scale.its the first game I wen back to decades later just to see it running at 60FPS
>>12874303What was Braben thinking? Basically erasing ship to ship dogfights entirely, the thing that was cool about the OG Elite. Now you fire missiles at hostile dots, 20,000 km ahead of you. I never made a connection with any of the ship designs because you never really get to see them. For me, this is the worst version of the Elite formula that has only been fixed with Elite: Dangerous.
>>12874303it was great that because Elite was such a smash hit that Braben and Bell had free reign to go full on astronomy and physics simulator for Frontier, gameplay be damned.
>>12876003>Basically erasing ship to ship dogfights entirelyHe didn't. Most people just can't fly a spaceship worth shit so they got filtered by the physics.Fighting in Frontier is FUN, if you know how. Elite becomes boring in comparison.>Now you fire missiles at hostile dots, 20,000 km ahead of you.You should have gotten closer.>fixed with Elite: Dangerous.Dumbed down, you mean.
>>12874303its breddy gud but im not autist enough to learn how to play it now that im 36go on without me frens
>>12878169>Frontier-Elite-II.gifWhy? That's Damocles
>>12874335Honestly I can't remember how I used to run this game, maybe one of the GL engine ports, it was on Windows 98. It does run perfectly in Dosbox Staging now for me, with 200 000 cycles (Pentium 2 equivalent) on dynamic core. Played so much of this and FFE, but never finished the storyline on FFE. So much to do in these games.
