i'm about to show you never-before-seen parts of nausicaa for pc-88
this is level 1. basically you go through houses collecting items and if you get the right one then you can get to the plane
this is the second stage, where the emulators crash. afaik there's no footage of what happens afterwards
>>12874571>>12874576I thought Japan was supposed to be "good" at art?
>>12874582this is the actual flight. this piss of shit is way too long, like 15m at least. you just try to fly within the corridor. imaging those yellow thingies are walls or shit and they curve every now and then>>12874587best looking game of 1984
now this, i'm pretty sure it's never before seen. the alien place you arrive at? i don't remember the plot of naussica so whatever. it has a similar gameplay to the first one except now you can die for some reason. i don't have to time to play this now, so i'm just checking out stages
>>12874596ok so basically you grabbed shell of eye of omu or some shit and then you go back by redoing the plane part again, story-wise it makes sense i guess
>AI slopGrow up
then you get a minigame where you use the cursor to remove the white part from the egg you just got? is o-mu from like omurice?>>12874603this game was made by humans back in 1984 lil bro
then war starts and you take the gunship. the one from inside the egg? dunno, we'll see.
the gunship part is pretty cool. as in, it's the same shit as before, except now it looks nice
this is what happens when you die in the deep forest, the next part. it wants some password, dunno, but HE IS BIG. HE IS ROBOT.
>>12874619oh ok, actually you go to the see of corruption you need to find a password to tell omu, that's what the password input was for
>>12874576ahhhhh my eyes>>12874596this is uniquely horrid>>12874612Would people have played PC-98 games on a TV or did it support a computer monitor of some kind? I could see this looking OK on a TV. But shit it's frightful on my screen today.
>>12874631>>12874619this is the sea of corruption again. now there's a monster and maybe so other shit, i haven't explored it properly
>>12874619oh so this is the very final puzzle actually, the 8th screen. what happens when you enter the password? we may never know. i might try to play the game properly tomorrow and beat it tho
>>12874636>Would people have played PC-98 games on a TV or did it support a computer monitor of some kind?i think they were sold with monitors. i tried some crt shaders and they all look like shit. you can see how these are supposed to look from the boxart pics
not sure about the scene on the right, maybe you can go down during flights?
this actually make me think how bad this article is: https://www.hardcoregaming101.net/kaze-no-tani-no-nausicaa/no only there's a lot of wrong stuff (items aren't random and they all have a purpose) but even emulators crashing on the first plane sequence aside, that dude could even give a honest try to the first part. as for the glider screenshot, maybe it indeed was cut...my verdict is this is literally the E.T. of japan: overhated because of ignorance
>>12874594>best looking game of 1984Looks worse than games from 1983.
>>12874694sorry, forgot to add>japanese
>>12874576Did they compress and resize images of other houses without creating transparency backgrounds for the sprites, and just paste them ontop of the background?
>>12874710transparence wasn't a thing back in 1984 japan
>>12874605lol imagine doing this without a walkthrough
>>12874657I think you're right, I looked it up and there's no TV connector on the back, both analog and digital RGB only. It's truly horrible looking, what a shame. How is the actual gameplay?
>>12874734the walking part is clunky, but once you understand your goal, the walking through the map and picking up stuff is not bad. the flying sections would have been fun if they were 2x faster by default, but maybe it's my clock issue. i'm still looking for the glider section, if it exists or not
so, the flight is actually fun, since you can speed up the plane. that's solved. also the ending is just some text, and then it boots you to the title screen with no fanfareat this point the only mysteries left is the glider section i guess? if anybody can find the original jp manual i would appreciate that
>>12874603Retard.
>>12874717Transparency was 100% a thing in software development back then, specifically for usage with sprites. Color masking is simply one method for achieving this, and it's really simple.
>>12874903no it wasn't
>>12874903It's pretty annoying to do with planar graphics, doable but still way more work than drawing opaque. Now that I think about it, it's just as complicated to resize a planar image. So yeah, it's a strange idea.
>>12874603Anti AI psychosis
>>12874571There's a full youtube playthrough THOUGH.
>>12875985linku?
>>12874596>now this, i'm pretty sure it's never before seen.I think the developers might of seen it
>>12875985only stage 1 afaik>>12876027you aren't funny
>>12876024>>12876037Type it in nipplenese.
>>12876037Don't say stupid nonsense for no reason, retard. Game developers aren't gods who must automatically be counted out as people who could possibly have seen parts of a game. If you give a crap about this game then actually play it and learn to understand it instead of cheating and showing random spoilers from it while you're still in the process of learning how it works, even as you trashtalk some Hardcore Gaming 101 article for doing the same thing you're doing but without as much cheating.
>>12876330projecting much? i beat the first level on my own, before the emulator crashed, and i actually understood what was going on, unlike hg101
So what do these flight segments look like in motion?
>>12875409Retard.
>>12874636Most PC-88 games don't look this bad
>>12876767because your pic related came out 5 years after nausicaa
>>12874596>>12874643I honestly thought this was a shitpost with clearly intentionally badly edited images considering how broken and out of place everything looks, to say nothing of how the size of the checkerboard background behind the objects varies wildly, but apparently this is actually how the game looks. What the fuck?
>11 of the 37 minutes is spent on the shell carving because it the carving isn't toggleableLooks like more up-to-date emulators handle it fine, but at what cost? Anyway never do just an EOP search for foreign media:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxLUkdMTpWI>>12876705Reminds me of Night Driver for Atari, but more garish. Not exactly nice on the ears either.>>12876767A lot of early games do look pretty bad, but Nausicaa has this PC-8001 quality to it.Keep in mind that the segments with the shittily overlaid art aren't exactly action segments and I've played a few games from 1984 that manage sprites moving over each other without overlay issues. This is just crapware.
>>12877403i vibeslopped a quick nec-pc shader, so in reality it looks a lot nicer. this is probably the most ambitious game for the time of its release, but there are definitely others that looks better, even from 1 year before this one >>12877425>Anyway never do just an EOP search for foreign mediafirst: i'm a jop. second: that video is from 2 weeks ago, lol. but that's great, that means i don't have to investigate further. guess that fabled glider section was just a bullshot
>>12877439A clock person, huh? This thread id 2 days old, so you could've JOPsearched. Maybe the glider section is optional or a failstate, maybe it played like crap though I can't imagine that would stop them. Why do you think this is ambitious exactly? This looks like slapdash licenseware to me, I've played unexpanded PC-8001 games that handle multi-genre gameplay better than this.
>>12877447>This thread id 2 days old, so you could've JOPsearched.sorry, i don't google for nausicaa walkthrough every week. the last time i played it was 1 year ago and there was nothing, now looks like something beat me to it, and that's ok.>Maybe the glider section is optional or a failstate, maybe it played like crap though I can't imagine that would stop them.afaik there are no other memory banks with other gameplay sections. it's probably an early version of the 2d flying part, they simply dropped the 3rd dimension because performance or bugs i guess. i guess i can investigate this angle>>12877447>I've played unexpanded PC-8001 games that handle multi-genre gameplay better than this.can you name one that came out before this? most were simply parserslop and static images. i played a bunch of those so feel free to namedrop actual titles
>>12877449I'm not quite sure why your mind went to graphics when I say genre and gameplay and you can't seriously imply Nausicaa isn't "staticslop" outside of the late 70s flying sequence they tacked on. For some single genre non-"staticslop" Hashire! Skyline, Olion-80 and Fanfun are popular titles you should be aware of. I'd mention the Alien Island 3D, but that's 1985 (I'll still mention it though as its cool). As for multi-genre I'd name the original 1983 Nobunaga's Ambition for a popular one and 脱出!死の青木ケ原/Dasshutsu! Shi no Aokigahara. Admittedly the mixed genres are much closer in them being grand strategy+tactical combat and ADV+survival respectively, but that's why I feel they work better.
>>12877501>I'm not quite sure why your mind went to graphics when I say genre and gameplay and you can't seriously imply Nausicaa isn't "staticslop" outside of the late 70s flying sequence they tacked on.have you seen the video you linked? it's half 2d walkslop and half 3d flyingslop, there only static thing (as in, from earlier parserslop) are the text intermissions and 1 cg....>>12877501>For some single genre non-"staticslop" Hashire! Skyline, Olion-80 and Fanfun are popular titles you should be aware of. I'd mention the Alien Island 3D, but that's 1985 (I'll still mention it though as its cool).for ambitious i meant multi-genre. i'm not sure i would count srpg as multigenre.also nausicaa won some tech grand prize thingy, so it's not just me saying that it was "technically impressive" for its time
>>12877513Your sprite disappears and reappears until it has moved a bit too far and it redraws the screen. The flying section is BASIC demo tier and it wouldn't surprise me if it was jacked from a BASIC listing with the completely stationary ship image laid over. It's ambitious for a HS student and not in a good way.>tech prize thingyA "write our games for us" competition. These were common and picrel also won one of those, so it's not exactly an indicator of quality. Another Nausicaa game (a very bland horizontal shooter) won along with the one you posted along with 3 other non-nausicaa titles. Obviously they didn't pick those 2 because of the hot new movie based on that IP coming out.Miyazaki apparently hated the Nausicaa games to the point of not wanting any Ghibli property to be made into games. Obviously a rumor, but that it exists is telling enough.
>>12877558>but that it exists is telling enough.that only tell us that miyazaki was a dumb luddite, considering how much money he could've made with ghibli ips vidya>Your sprite disappears and reappears until it has moved a bit too far and it redraws the screen. it doesn't redraw the whole screen>The flying section is BASIC demo tier yet it was the first 3 flying section everwho hurt you? why are you so obsessed on shitting on that ge? are you from hg101?
>>12877587Uh-oh, stinky's thread didn't work out huh? Go sit by yourself then.
>>12877598>stinky's thread???????????meds, now.
