Was this the most mismanaged retro company?
>>
who gives a fuck

I'd go with SNK's suicide by amusement parks.
>>
Commodore
>>
Jack Tramiel owned it for awhile so yes. That guy bought a video game company and didn't want to make game consoles,

NEC definitely deserves a mention. They failed miserably marketing the PC Engine outside of Japan and then followed it up with one of the absolute worst consoles ever in the PC-FX. Not even Atari or Sega embarrassed themselves this badly
>>
>>12876051
Their PC fumble is significantly worse than their minor console sidegigs, but they are still around and still a large multinational to boot.

Atari died, then both its splits died, then its French skinsuit wearer died and that is now being puppeted around by a muttified Luxembourgian golem likely for tax dodging purposes as why else go to Luxembourg. It will likely also die as it can't seem to turn a profit. That brand is cursed, it can only work if you become a cocaine junkie.
>>
>>12876008
Unlike Sega, Atari was at the top of the industry at some point. Let that sink in.
>>
>>12876138
The arcade industry exists.
>>
>>12876285
It is hard to imagine for anyone under 50 but in the 70's and early 80's Atari were kings of the arcade, of course they screwed that up too.
>>
>>12876008
I’d say yes because they fumbled their original monopoly on the console market and lost their arcade lead; then they were brought back to life as a home computer manufacturer till Jack “the Kike” Tramiel ran it into the ground by gutting all the talent and gambling on a console he cut corners on.
>>
>>12876008
Kassar Atari, yeah. A great company ruined by the same American business practices that are causing tech industry bubbles now.

Tramiel Atari, not really. They were actually doing pretty alright up until their stupid bet in the Jaguar. The Tramiels should've sticked to computers, the only thing they were decent at.
>>
>>12876051
The failure of NEC's gaming division is way more embarrassing than even Atari's.
>>

Arcade Atari was actually a different company, more like West Coast Midway more than anything.
>>

This and it's not even close.

I'd say it's actually the 3DO company,

Atari, NEC, Commodore all succeeded before they failed. Whereas 3DO failed from the beginning, because their entire business plan was essentially a poison pill and it all backfired horribly,

The "license the hardware" plan was just completely fucking doomed because not only could you not make the consoles a loss leader for the sake of hardware sales you couldn't even sell them at cost or even a minor margin. The manufacturers' only stake was in hardware sales so they had to make their money there, hence the ridiculous, outrageous, totally noncompetitive price.

And the idea was that it would be cheap to develop for and offer better terms than Nintendo so it would attract 3rd parties, which was not a terrible premise. But it launched with ONE fucking game and not even a good one. The most horrifically expensive console on the market had no games, so no one bought it, so it had a small user base, so the massive 3rd party support never materialized because why make games for a console no one's buying? They put the cart before the horse. It needed to launch with killer apps, come out of the gate hard and prove the audience was there, and instead they just fell right on their face from minute one. Seriously, how the FUCK do you release a console more expensive with the SNES, Genesis, and TG16 *combined* at the time and not even have launch titles ready?

And even after that they fucked up the Jurassic Park license by releasing lazy minigame slop instead of the platformers that sold like hotcakes on every other console. Being able to use actual film footage from the hottest movie in decades should have been a coup and instead the 3DO JP got mogged by last-gen versions. Similarly, the near-arcade quality of their Street Fighter port should have been a real selling point but they took the piss out of it by not having a default six-button controller, which had already become the standard. So many blown opportunities

>Atari, NEC, Commodore all succeeded before they failed. Whereas 3DO failed from the beginning

If you’re going to go this route, there are loads of companies handled worse than 3DO. Konix sold all their assets to fund a game console that never even ended up being released.

By that time their computers wouldn't be doing decent anymore as WIntel domination was on the horizon so they wouldn't be able to compete anyway. The idea wasn't bad, but the outcome was. All of that aside, the Tramiels happily turned the company into a fake fur coat for a HDD manufacturer who then promptly died to due AtarAIDS with Hasbro then contracting that pestilence before it infected the French. It really just kills whoever it touches.

>That guy bought a video game company and didn't want to make game consoles,
>that went on to buy atari and cancelled all consoles until the 90s
peak dunning kruger

>>12876775
>The "license the hardware" plan was just completely fucking doomed
>worked for sega, nintendo, sony and then there's the arcade industry that licensed out their hardware
it's amazing how you can write an enormous wall of text and still be incredibly wrong
>>
Probably. Selling Driver devs is about the stupidest thing they could have done.
>>
>>12876051
They really should have stopped calling their consoles "PC" after the first 3 retarded japaniggers got confused about it.
PC-FX sounds like some sort of 90s video editing software no one knows about anymore because everyone who used it or was involved in it's development died of Alzheimer.
