What retro game has the worst writing/story? No minimalist arcade stories count. It should be something that’s actually trying to do tell a narrative or be entertaining and failing miserably at it. Pic related had a lot of awful moments but is there something worse?

Pains me to say it, but probably Final Fantasy IV. Let me preface by saying I have a lot of love and nostalgia for this game. It was literally babby-me's first RPG. The plot feels like a round-robin story, with each part written by a series of different authors. It starts out solid enough:>a good-hearted, but troubled knight is torn between honoring his sworn duty and what he feels is right>makes his decision after being unwittingly complicit in act of savagery >after a tragic loss, he is confronted by his past sins and forced to seek redemption>betrayed by both his king and a former ally, presumably out of greed and envy Unfortunately, after this the game quite literally loses the plot:>spirit at the mountain is protag's father (although heretofore there's been zero mention of his family)>several characters sacrifice themselves heroically (LOL jk; nobody actually died except one old man)>everyone evil, including king and former allies, were actually replaced with a monster doppleganger or brainwashed (including the BIG BAD)>BIG BAD is protag's secret brother (once again no mention of the protag's family up to this point)>suddenly ALIENS! and we're off to the moon>BIGGER BAD was actually behind everything>BIGGER BAD (pic related) doesn't even make an appearance until the very end of the gameOof.

Why? Whose to say the Vault Dweller wouldnt gather other civilized inhabitants of the Wastes from across several towns, and pass on that culture to their children. Even if they couldn't replicate the guns and computers of the vault, they at least wouldn't logically regress to the bone-in-nose shit shown in Fallout 2. Also, am I really supposed to believe that in maybe 3 decades the tribe built AN ENTIRE TEMPLE OF TRIALS FOR A PROPHECY OF A CHOSEN ONE. That is barely enough time for the Dweller to have died, been mourned, and be unknown by a single living generation.
