This thread is valid because I'm only asking about retro gaming emulation capabilities of the console and nothing else.

There is a homebrew app that lets you hook up modern controllers like the 8bitdo, so that's nice, the native wii u emulators are pretty bad and the homebrew ones are finnicky. You can use it for the wii emulators, which are actually pretty good, and doing that you can run them through hdmi, but it's a pretty low resolution and is mostly scaling the image through your tv from 480p, that will look ugly

For running wii emulators on a crt it's not bad, I think you'd be better off using a pi with an AV hat though, or the same set up with a mister.
>>
>>12879996
10 years ago the only good emulators were the same as the ones on the Wii, theyd just run in vWii mode. Didn't seem to have nearly as much homebrew interest as the Wii or 3DS. Maybe that's chamged iver the years. >>>/vg/hbg/ will give better info.

Also there is a way to add gamecube compatibility from what I remember, not emulation but I don't believe it supports gamecube discs or controllers. Can't remember, haven't even thought about the wiiu in a long time.
>>

Honestly god tier, a hacked Wii U starts out with Wii U, Wii, and Gamecube natively, then it has emulation covering everything up to the Wii U, including the DS, but not the 3DS. You can't go wrong with it.
>>
I hacked mine about a year ago with aroma.
Basically this >>12880035
You can use on Retroarch for everything below 5th gen, runs natively in Aroma, you can use the USB HID to Vpad plugin to use any controller. Nintendont works natively with the Gamecube Controller Adapter, and for 5th gen you've got vwiii forwarders for not64 and wiistation, but those only work with the gamepad or a real classic controller
>>
>>12879996
if you have one laying around its great. its not worth going out of your way to get just for emulation though
>>
>>12880137
I think it's totally worth going for a second hand Wii U if you want a cheap emulation system.
Not sure how it is in North America, but in Europe you can get one for 50-100 euros, depending on add-ons, games, condition, model, etc.
At that price point the only comparable deal is either a shitty chink handheld (which is cancerous) or a PS3.
CRT sissies will pretend the OG Wii is better for the 240p output, but I don't care for larpers.

In fact, I'd say either the Wii U or PS3 are the best deals in gaming, if you actually want to play vidya and not collect CRT screenshots to show off scanlines.

Wii family

>Wii U
Best way to play Gamecube
>Wii
Good and cheaper alternative.
>Gamecube
Consolized GBA
>3DS
Great way to play the gameboy family
>DS
Also great

Anyone of these consoles are bad for emulation. Inaccurate emulation and poor performance. Wii and GC can do 240p but a greater cost than playing on a emulator with runahead and shaders
>>
>>12880137
Pretty much this. If you've got one, great, otherwise there are more capable alternatives that emulate way more than a Wii U will.
>>
>>12879996
doesn't do 240p so i think i would prefer the regular wii honestly. but being able to play gc and wii stuff using the gamepad is cool

At that price point I like it as a machine to play gamecube, wii, and wii u games. Those consoles have a lot of great games. and to be able to play all of them natively for that cheap is a great deal.

But if you are interested in playing the games before gamecube, a cyclone v mister fpga clone is a better deal. wii u isnt good at gen v, isnt good at emulating old pc or mame games either. you can get away with some turn based snes rpg's but anything action based will cause you agony

Even when you do this https://gbatemp.net/threads/wiiu-virtual-console-finally-fixed-no-more-dark-filter-and-widescreen-support.517158/?

You can use gamecube controllers

>Wii U
native GameCube games
native Triforce games
native Wii games
native Wii U games
M2 GBA VC is so good with no input lag is basically a 1080p GBA player
NERD DS VC the same, only way of properly playing DS games on a monitor
NES/SNES/N64 emulation not as good, but serviceable
can connect every single NSO Switch controller (NES/SNES/N64) via Bloopair, or use NES/SNES Mini controllers with a Wiimote
I even use the NSO Switch 2 GameCube controller with a WUP-028 and a BlueRetro adapter.
>3DS
native GBA games
native DS games
native 3DS games
GB/C and GG emulation is perfect as it's a problem solved, just 1 frame of input lag vs real hardware
incredible lineup of sega, and some nintendo, classics in stereoscopic 3D
good SNES emulation if you have a new model

Add all the homebrew emulators, and honestly, you’re set for life with two devices. It’s the culmination of everything Nintendo was under Yamauchi and Iwata, specially Iwata's, the only eras that matters.

And forgot Virtual Boy emulation on 3DS via Red Viper, which is very cool.
>>
Not /vr/ but is the best way to play ds games on a tv

>>12880930
you have no idea what native means in this context do you?
>>
>>12879996
y
>>
>>12881260
I'm pretty sure you're the one who has no idea. Wii U is binary compatible with GC (nintendont), Triforce arcade that is just a GC (nintendont), Wii and Wii U games natively. 3DS is binary compatible with GBA (open_agb_firm), DS and 3DS. Anon is right.
>>
>>12881526
>open_agb_firm
Not 100% compatibility, but I'll concede it is as close to native you can get. A NDS with a gba flashcart is way better, imo
One thing that I still don't understand is why there's so little effort in porting all those decomps of gba games into native nds/3ds games.
>>
>>12881540
>Not 100% compatibility
No, it has 100% compatibility. The only games you can't play without patches are titles like Boktai 1-3 and Yoshi Topsy-Turvy, because, obviously, the 3DS lacks a solar sensor. And, sadly, the gyroscope can't be used when the 3DS boots into AGB_FIRM mode, at least yet.

The 3DS is not like the DSi, which lacks the full GBA hardware. The best people can do on the DSi is GBA_Runner, which emulates the things that are missing on the DSi. There is nothing missing on the 3DS hardware. Nintendo brought back the full GBA hardware in the 3DS and created AGB_FIRM because they planned to sell GBA games on the eShop. They only end up using it with the free Ambassador games. The original 3DS simply can't emulate GBA games at full speed. Now with open_agb_firm, we can boot any ROM without injection into the Ambassador games.
>>
>>12881540
It has absolute compatibility because the 3DS still has the GBA hardware inside it. There's no compatibility percentage when you're directly binary-compatible. You could even argue that Nintendont is "more emulated" (absolutely not, it's native too) than open_agb_firm, since it emulates things like memory cards and the broadband adapter... But open_agb_firm? Absolutely nothing. It’s 100% a GBA, top to bottom.
>>
>>12881540
you can install the GBA games individually to the dashboard as well, it's native
>>
>>12881540
its technically native on a 3ds but as someone who played both it feels way better on an original ds with flashcart. 3ds's screen is too far off from the original resolution and aspect ratio, especially the xl. you are looking into a very small window. and ds (lite) + gbc + flashcarts for gb/gbc, gba, and ds combined are still cheaper than a 3ds, and a way better experience. especially the gbc. that thing is magical to play on.
>>
>>12882673
>screen is too far off from the original resolution and aspect ratio, especially the xl

3DS OG and xl have the same resolution and aspect ratio though
>>
>>12879996
Wii U has slightly better N64 support. Besides that it doesn't really have much over Wii.
Native Gamecube is still possible with homebrew, however you won't be able to use GCN controllers without an adapter (Link cable support won't work).
>>
>>12882727
not sure how it works exactly but looks like shit on the xl. pixel density or something. idk
>>
>>12882862
Lame answer
>>
>>12880126
>Nintendont works natively with the Gamecube Controller Adapter
you just mean it works with the controller adapter. there's nothing native about homebrew
