So why does /vr/ argue over Aeris v. Aerith but not Bartz v. Butz, Terra v. Tina, Edward v. Gilbert, Sabin v. Matthew, etc?
>>12880386Because Aeris got changed to Aerith in all material released after the original game and it became her de facto official localized name, whereas with most of the others, they stuck to the original localization. As for Bartz, that was his first officially localized name, with Butz being only in the fan translation, and also let's face it, comparatively fewer people have played FF5 and it just doesn't generate passionate discussion the way the others do.
Aerith and Cwoud
>>12880386Don't know about the rest, but I see the Terra v. Tina argument all the time.
>>12880386Most people here are unaware that the games have Japanese versions
>>12881023It seems like the retro video games board would have the highest concentration of people who know that.
i say the names from the games i own not the theorycrafted names according to mentally ill manchildren
>>12880386>aerisher name when the game comes out. everyone who got to experience ffvii learns her name as aeris>aerithher name after square became a joke and ruined the IP with mega cringe compilation faggotry
>>12880386the original english localized name sounds vastly better in every one of those examples. butz? tina? retarded names
>>12881079Based
Everyone talks about Tina vs Terra. What about Tina vs. Leilani?Who knew video game characters hated that name so much?
gamers are illiterate and don't get the reference to la celestina
crazy that they didn't use butz just because it's the name of a famous holocaust denier. ah well.
>>12881172What about Guinevere vs. Prin Prin (from Ghosts N Goblins)?
>CRT TV>It's a razor sharp 1000 TVL PVM over RGBAh yes, the everyman experience
>>12880386>>12881172I take original Terra and Leilani over alter.Fuck Tina.
>>12880396If only "Batsu" was a commonly used japanese name that has connotations with strong-willed young men. Alas, Butz is all we can work with.
>>12881515why would you name someone "Punishment"?
>>12880386Along with what >>12880396 said, it's because it was Final Fantasy VII. The biggest game in he series. A lot of people got very attached to Aeris, and "Aeris dies" became the "Darth Vader is Luke's father" of video game spoilers. You can't go from years of gamers talking passionately about "Aeris" and then suddenly tell them they should be saying "Aerith" without some friction. There was also a common conflict on forums between people still attached to saying Aeris and others who insisted they stop saying it in favor of Aerith.
