I keep getting filtered in FFT when Black Mages are introduced as enemies. What do?
>>
Make one of your characters a Black Mage, that way you can be filtered when the computer merks them every time you try to cast a spell

Is this a meme?
>>

The solution I eventually worked out to this was to switch to playing a different, better tactics game.
>>
>>12882690
What? Magic is useless in this game.
>>
>>12882690
you can open the turn order to see what they're targeting with their spells.
>>
>>12882690
Have you considered turning off your filters?
>>
>>12882690
Black Mage isn't filtering you Dorter is. The map is designed stupid as fuck for so early in the game and many people quit on it. If you mean that map because it's where enemy BLMs show up. Game goes back to normal difficulty curve after Dorter
>>
It's a bit of a difficulty spike as stated already. You could perhaps do a few random battles on the map. The random battles scale with your level while story battles are static levels. If the black mages fuck you up, consider bringing healing and reviving with either Chemists or White Mages.

And I don't know how into you are turn based tactics but most common rule in the genre is that fast alpha strike taking down enemies as soon as possible trumps everything else. So don't spread damage on multiple enemy units if they still survive to the next turn and instead just focus down one enemy at time
>>

Yeah, so FFT isn't a fair game. You just get a little prompt on where to place your troops with zero context of where in the blueberry fuck they're going to sit in the stage, let alone have the context of the layout of the stage itself, and this is one the pros/cons of the game depending on opinion.

On the PSX, what you're supposed to do is just field your guys, accept that you're going to get ganked most likely on your first try, but you'll have gained the experience of knowing exactly what the encounter is, and so you can go do whatever prep work you need to do to be able to beat what the game is throwing at you. This general strategy works *almost* throughout the entire game, the big exception being Riovanes Castle, which you really really REALLY need to make a backup save before you enter that place.

In modern era... I mean you could just go onto youtube and watch the stage play out first there and see what the enemy units are and what the terrain is going to be like. I mean there are some asshole encounters in the game where you'd never expect to face the assassins, they come in, gank you, and that's just how the game works.

But that's all beside the point. We're talking about Dorter, right? So what you want to do is use Monks. Monks are vicious in this game just in general, they pretty much are the best melee unit until ninjas and perhaps samurai, and the Punch Art is just pretty damn good in general. You certainly could do worse. If you want to go full autist and get Earth Slash on your monks, you get some damn good ranged utility from your melee units. A lot of players shit on chemists because white mages can heal "for free." Well the advantage of chemists besides the fact that they can throw items is that throwing an item doesn't have a cast time. So chemists with a good repertoire of items they can throw can actually be invaluable in some asshole encounters.
Archers suck donkey balls however the the archers in Dorter aren't awful enough to not fuck up your clothies so if you do bring a mage to the fight, you need an answer not only for the archer assholes but for the immediate damage your mages are going to take upon entry. Maybe Delita will just bee-line for the high archer. Y'never know.

... if you want to get super autistic... you could just learn how to make a mediator, level their skills up so that you can persuade a chocobo. Sit around waiting for it to make eggs. Once you get a couple black chocobos get rid of the yellow chocobos and p'soon you'll get a red chocobo which is basically death incarnate against most things. It will destroy your enemies. Lesser case for the cat monsters, but Blaster in some of those later forms is damn nice.

If you want to get even more autistic, you could train up Ninjas, give them the Monk's innate unarmed proficiency, and now you have a fully functional Ninja which will absolutely gank anything it walks up to.

There is, of course, the ultimate autism which is getting a calculator, but that completely breaks the game.

You solve the problem like we would IRL, kill all blacks mages from afar

Unless I am incorrect, bows are not accessible to the player at the point in the game being discussed.

Is there no way to beat the stage without grinding or doing a very specific build from the start of the game?

I wasn't even aware that FFT had random battles when I got stuck on this stage, it's so early.
>>
>>12883385
Yeah as someone who got this game down to a science you gotta grind a couple of levels. I got filtered here the first attempt and dropped the game for years.
>>
>>12883419
Thanks. I'll adjust my expectations and consider giving it another shot.
>>
>>12883383
You can steal one in the mission, and buy a crossbow earlier.

First order of business is to grind Squire on every character until you learn JPup which greatly increases the JP you earn for each action. Grind Chemist on all characters until you get Potion and Auto Potion, which uses your highest available potion to heal yourself which is triggered upon taking damage. Grind random battles using 2 Chemists and 3 Squires and rotate them as they learn the abilities mentioned above. Switch your jobs to whatever you like keeping JPup and Autopotion equipped. Use all the gil you earned to stock up on potions and the best gear possible. You will now have much more breathing room to enjoy the game and not get murdered for making a single mistake. Lastly, among basic units Knights are incredibly powerful all game long so if you ever run into trouble there isn't a problem 3 knights and 2 chemists can't handle.

Same anon poster here with another tip. Grind out a summoner and get the spell Golem. Put Summon as your secondary ability on a non-magic using character and summon Golem to start each fight. It blocks an extremely high amount of damage from human enemy attacks. It blocks damage on every one of your characters until the damage threshold is reached. It'll absorb 4-5 attacks before any unit takes damage. Combined with Autopotion you'll be near invincible. It's the most cost effective damage prevetion/healing per MP for the majority of the game. It's criminally underrated.

Same anon poster as the last few tips. I would be remiss if I didn't stress the point of having redundant save files. There are a few points in this game where you can softlock yourself by saving. Two fights in particular can be hard if not impossible and you are allowed to save and are thrown right into the next battle without a chance to adjust your setup or even access the overworld map. Always keep three distinct save files: save file1 you overwrite as you play, save file 2 should overwrite after each major story beat, and 3 should overwrite every few story beats. This prevents you from ever having to restart due to a cascade of poor choices and unfortunate circumstances. This chart shows what levels in each class unlock additional classes. There are too many overpowered combos to list here and half the fun of the game is finding things out yourself. There are a million guides but honestly just play through it your first time somewhat blind. You'll come back and play this game many times over the years but you only get to experience it for the first time once. I hope you get as much mileage as I do from this title. Keep us posted on your progress and questions, quality threads about beloved games are rare these days and it's nice to see.

PROTIP; make all of your characters black mages, so the computer can't merc all of your black mages when you try to cast a spell. Checkmate.
