I always thought people complaining about RE4 were just contrarians, but after beating it I realized they were right. I have no issue with the first half of the game. Honestly, if the whole game was like this, I'd easily give it a 9/10. There's a ton of cool new features and variety. The map felt quite open. Except when you enter the castle, all of this goes down the drain. It's still decent, but more and more it feels like a generic corridor shooter. I don't dislike shooting, but there's simply not much else to do there. The whole fun is only in upgrading guns and looking for treasures. It's not even that good as a shooter. This is still pretty much tank controls, but in 3D, the enemies are slow, and there's like 4–5 guns in your arsenal. The game gives you enough shotgun rounds to use it for 90% of the game. Oh yeah, and one thing about the adjustable difficulty: what the fuck? So in a RE game, we're punishing you for saving ammo?I was surprised just how mediocre the plot was. Leon's constant one liners are a joke. Ashley has like 5 lines in the whole game. There's very few characters overall. Everything feels like a corny B-movie. Escaping the island on a jet ski is like a cherry on top.Disc 2 was the last drop. At this point, they're not even pretending anymore, this is just a straightforward military shooter. If people hate RE5, then this was not too different from it.All in all, I can't see how anyone can call this the greatest game of all time. Surely, the graphics were amazing, it also transitioned things into 3D very well. I'm not even so much against change. The problem is, as an actual GAME, RE4 just so whatever. It really feels like a standard 15 hour RE title watered down to make a 30 hour game. The whole 2nd half of the game is just filler, a kinda boring corridor shooter only carried by the weapon upgrade system. It's just jarring how to this day this gets praised like the 2nd coming of Jesus.
>>12883238> Everything feels like a corny B-movie.That’s a good thing you irony poisoned zoomshit. As someone who loves shit like Robocop and Total Recall I loved the one liners and corny parts.>Im sending my right hand after you>I didn’t realize it came offLMAO got im
>>12883238>It's just jarring how to this day this gets praised like the 2nd coming of Jesus. In contemporary times it was considered a masterpiece and one of the greatest ever made. Not so much today, because of faggits like you. Nothing you said was even substantial. You want to force the game into a preconceived box based on what its prequels were. If the title was changed to something different and it was called its own separate franchise none of your complaints would even be valid.
>>12883238youre gonna make all the uncs seethe but as an enlightened unc I can confirm you are factually correct. Its kind of like Metroid Prime, the spectacle of the game at launch caused people to highly overrate a good game into some untouchable masterpiece that it really wasnt, and thats evident now going back to it
>>12883238This isn't your blog faggot
>>12883238I agree that RE4 crowd was annoyingly hard on RE5. You're right that RE5 is extremely similar to the back half of 4.but then I also want to call out the people that were hard on 4 who said it was too much of a departure from previous entries, I assume they wanted a next gen RE1 or 2, but 3 was clearly itching to get more action-y. and code veronica already did next gen RE and it was considered stale. I'd say RE4 has been vindicated in the context of its series. Very rare to take such a bold swing and hit a home run.As for the game being overrated in the grand scheme of gaming, It is one of the greats of its generation at the very least. frontloaded, true, but there weren't any other adventure shooters of its calibur back then so people played the hell out of it. It's enemy = pinata system was too smooth the put the controller down. Really brilliant "gameplay loop" on Capcom's part. Modern gaming owes so much to this game that its revolutionary design choices feel obvious to a someone used to modern games, But it isnt RE4's fault that every game made since copied it in some way. Upgrades, different guns for different runs, a well-balanced shop. It was just so forward thinking and balanced for a good singleplayer experience. I'm trying to say that it doesnt stand out much from gaming today but it stood out a lot from its peers at its time. I dont see any reason to call it over rated if its still a solid playthrough 20+ years later.>>12883253hard agree. the tone and dialogue was perfect. Sincere goofy coolguy shit rocks
>>12883238You should space your paragraphs out better, this is a giant word dump and is difficult to read.
it was cool to consider RE4 a masterpiece when current RE games (and movies) were all action But now that they (both games and movies) are back to being horror it's cool to shit on it.Funny how that works. Almost like there is nothing objective about it and people are just victim to current marketing.
Still one of my favorite games of all time, but it does drag in certain sections. imo the reason that people dislike the island is because the castle drags on for too long and wears out its welcome.
>>12883343It doesn’t help that the island is mostly just more tedious mowing down waves of enemies.
>>12883354Well what I mean is, the castle already has a lot of that and drags on for too long. By the time you get to the island, it’s sort of just going through the motions.
RE4 is fun, but it does have it's share of flaws.>first half is more open-endedI remember the village outside of the part where you first get the shotgun, and the farm where you can pick up a ton of eggs, to be a lot of narrow corridors. What bothered me about the 2nd and 3rd sections of the game is how the game starts to rely on surprise-dumping enemies on you. In the village, you can see the majority of enemies coming, and even people hidden around corners are visible if you pay attention. Meanwhile the castle is full of robed guys who will suddenly pop out from a hidden exit with a RPG and nail you if you didn't already know they were going to be there. The island has a lot of the same shit as the castle, only now enemies have guns instead of crossbows.>>12883316RE5 was overly hated for the wrong reasons.>STUPID FUCKING ESCORT MISSION GAMESheva can handle herself for the most part, and is walking death with a sniper rifle or the bow and arrows. Not to mention you had to escort the president's daughter through about a quarter of RE4, and she actually was 100% worthless and unable to defend herself, making the escort sections in RE4 that much more of a pain in the ass than any part of RE5. I died twice in RE4 because I stashed the girl in a garbage can somewhere and went to go clear out the enemies, only to have someone spawn behind me and run over and grab her, then head out the exit before I could get back to her. That doesn't happen in RE5, at worst Sheva might get fucked by Wesker in the last fight before the final area, but that whole fight is gimmicky bullshit anyways.>IT TURNED THE SERIES INTO ACTION GAYME!In RE4 you will literally run out of ammo in the first major encounter if you don't use melee attacks, because you don't do enough damage even with headshots. You HAVE to treat it as an action game to make progress, trying to treat it like old-school RE survival-horror will lead to you running out of ammo and getting killed in a corner.
>>12883382I actually had a good time with RE5 co-op back in the 360 days, but it is lacking in personality by comparison. No attaché case or merchant was a big downgrade. The African setting also isn’t as cool.
>>12883390African city sucked, African tribal village was kinda cool. What really sucked about RE5 was the needlessly complex ruins section that went on forever, and the ship onwards.Mercs and Desperate Escape were 10/10 though.
>>12883343No way fag.Castle > Village >>> Island
>>12883462>ruins section that went on forever Yeah that shit was a total slog.
>>12883238Don't understand your issue, so you are upset that the game is different and fun?
>>12883316RE4 is just a very different genre from RE1-3 is all. Some people like survival horror with a focus on puzzles and backtracking, others like action horror. They are both great, but any time a game series changes it is going to piss people off. I have to admit I really want to see an RE game that goes back to fixed camera and puzzles, but I doubt they could make a decent one with all the 2D artists now replaced by forgettable RE engine photogrammetry, AI, and gray featureless models. For example compare RE2 og to code veronica. RE5 and RE6 were just terrible games with no atmosphere or direction
>>12883238It's the worst game I've ever had the displeasure of playing.
The problem with resident evil 4 is the game goes downhill. At first, the game is 10/10 with the environment of the farms, the forests, the small town, etc. It really makes it feels like a different resident evil game.Later, the castle is average. Now it feels more like a medieval game, but whatever. Finally, the island feels like a cliche place of many other action games with soldiers and wars.i wish all the game had taken place in forests/small towns/farms/lakes areas like the first part of the game.
>>12883390>No attaché case or merchant was a big downgrade.I disagree about the case.Having a huge inventory full of ammo, healing supplies, and grenades makes you practically invincible. Unless you or Ashley get hit with an insta-kill attack, you just enter the paused case menu, heal up, reload, and get ready to respond. In RE5, nothing stops when you are messing around with your inventory. You want to heal or pass something off to your partner, you gotta pick a good time to do it. You want to perform a quick-reload so you don't have to spare a few seconds reloading, you need to master the quick sequence of buttons needed to open inventory, transfer ammo to the weapon, and close inventory. 9 slots means you get your gun, a single stack of ammo for it, and 7 slots for other weapons, grenades, healing items, and ammo. Oh, and the two armors to protect against guns and melee attacks. If you carry both armors, which you most likely want to, that just leaves 5 slots. As for the merchant, divided opinion. Early game when he's out in the field and doesn't always appear, yeah, it's a loss. Later on when he's always in fixed positions and going to him just means a lot of backtracking, nothing of value was lost.Either way, co-op No Mercy Mercs in RE5 is fucking awesome. If you haven't played it with a friend who has half an idea of what they are doing, then you haven't experienced the best part of RE5.
>>12884379People say this shit and it feels like the most low IQ brain dead take I ever heard. You have never played an RE game before, I refuse to believe any human above the age of 6 is able.
>>12883382>Not to mention you had to escort the president's daughter through about a quarter of RE4, and she actually was 100% worthless and unable to defend herself, making the escort sections in RE4 that much more of a pain in the ass than any part of RE5Except you could often hide Ashley so she was out of harms way, or just tell her to wait somewhere safe, and even when enemies did get to her, she wasn'tbeing instantly mauled, she just gets picked up and you'vegot all the time in the world to bail her out as the enemyslowly walks with her.Meanwhile Sheva will instead waste all your non-rifle ammo and run into enemies with a death wish and the enemies are out to kill her as much as they are out for you.
>>12883238Careful, you're going to rile up all the nostalgia goggled midwits
>>12883238What do you clowns actually want games to be? RE4 is about shooting parasite infected humans that have become evil monster people that want to murder you. You also have to rescue the fake president's daughter. What the hell do you want? RPG elements? Guilds? You want to go off to another Spanish town and play some darts or Pool like its your friends from GTAIV calling you, scratch that, bothering you for the upteenth time diverting your attention away from the main quest? You variety faggots are so annoying. The only issue here is you retards when you talk shit about old great games saying it isn't as good as people say because "hurr its repetitive and you do the same shit over and over derp." If you want distraction nonsense and shinier new graphics go play dumb open world games that will give your autism brain a trillion useless collectibles to find for your stupid achievement or trophy.
>>12885191I really think a lot of it is a generational thing. I think gen Z simply likes to bitch or be such ultra contrarians that they want to shit on everything millennials held up as great simply to be contrarian. I also think it could be in part jealously oddly enough since they didn't grow up with the game. Either way there is definitely some strange psychology to this going on. I remember seeing some anons say this is also why these fags love remakes. They can "claim them" in a sort of way. It becomes their games, they get to not only live through it but all of this stuff is highly social now and talked about on social media, memed about etc. They get to be in and experience the hype and launch in real time with others. Something they will never be able to do with old games. However OP could easily also claim he is a millennial or older but that he still hates the game. Or he could also be lying because no matter what I guarantee he is a shitty troll trolling. People hating on the original RE4 to me expose themselves big time for having shit taste.
resident evil 4a horse with no name
>>12884862You get a sniper rifle to give her before you even finish the first chapter. The complaint about Sheva wasting all your ammo comes from people who got filtered by the public gathering survival section at the beginning of the game when they think she's gonna be good for defense and she just body-shots people with the pistol. Even then the area is loaded with ammo and there's also a SMG to pick up if you are still low on firepower, so the people making the complaint didn't even bother trying to find resources during the battle. The complaint becomes even more laughable by the end of the first chapter since you're rolling in ammo and have multiple weapons to use. At worst Sheva will have a full magazine of pistol ammo to waste at any time before you give her the rifle, and you can give her the shotgun to put a stop to that before you finish the second or third level.
>>12886018She does waste ammo. The rifle is the only thing worth givng to her cause that's the only gun she properly aims with, anything else is absolutely a waste. She really drags the game down on a first playthrough, the game becomes significantly better in NG+ when you max out and hand her something with infinite ammo.
>>12885197Pretty much. This also explains the recent "SW prequels are actually good" psychosis.
>>12883238I had the opposite reaction. I always thought it was slop. Then I replayed it on PC. You can't deny that it's a hell of a fucking romp. It's not eeeeeerie and spooky, but it's a fucking blast.Dino Crisis is a similat thing too. Where the first game is more of a "work of art", and DC2 is the actual fun video game.
>>12886193Again, you get a sniper rifle to give her before you even reach the end of the first chapter. How the hell does she make the first playthrough that hard for you when you get the weapon she's best with before you even reach the tribal village? Hell, you have two sniper rifles by the time you finish chapter 2. Problem is solved before the majority of the game is even reached.>inf ammoUnless you are speedrunning through for S-rank to unlock shit, then why are you playing in easy-mode? Outside of trying to pull S-rank on the highest difficulty, the game is already plenty easy.
>>12883238This game was so fucking awful, that I hadn't tried out and bought newer resident evil games that came after.
>>12883238I'm pretty sure RE4 only blew up because it was the only game on the Gamecube that wasn't just Bingbing Wahoo.
>>12886479Rifle ammo isn't that common, and she burns through it like it grows on trees. I like conserving my strong ammo for strong enemies, not just popping every little mook's head off until the rifle is dry. Sheva does the opposite of that, she is objectively more of a hindrance than Ashley ever was, she forces you to just give up the rifle to her, and then you have to hand all the ammo you find off to her too if you want her to pull her weight at all.
