The great debate.
>>
RE for the gameplay and level design.
SH for the atmosphere and story.
>>
I'll take Resident Evil because it's much more fun to replay. Shotgun blasting zombie heads clean off doesn't get old and the mansion is still a top tier survival horror map. Silent Hill has better puzzles but that only matters for the first playthrough when you don't know how to solve them instantly.

This. Even though it has unlockable bonus weapons and multiple endings, Silent Hill just doesn’t have the same replay value.
>>
>>12883417
it does if you like it more. there’s loads of secrets and multiple endings to see
>>
Both are different kinds of 10/10

If I’m choosing I’ll go with SH1, it just feels so vast and immersive for a PS1 game. Ample opportunity for getting lost in the world and exploring, looking, experimenting with your surroundings. Especially when you go super-deep and fuck with the mechanics like a nerd.

RE is infinitely replayable just from the quality and polish of the fairly simplistic concepts. Does it better than 2 and 3 in many ways
>>
>>12883389
RE1 vs SH? Definitely SH but it is kind of unfair since SH came out later and could build off from what worked with RE.
>>
>>12883389
Silent Hill is scarier and more atmospheric. Resident Evil is more fun and replayable.
>>
silent hill has fantastic sound design, abolutely horrifying music, noise, effects to create atmosphere that cannot ne topped for psone. it is possibly scarier than any later sh games. the story is intelligent and there’s a lot of alternate paths that require multiple plays to fully see all of the story. it’s a masterpiece of survival horror.

resident evil is the compact survival horror king. it’s very tightly plotted, filled with a lot of variation for multiple ways to complete the game as well. it is tense because you can die easily, it is more about a jumpscare than sh’s dread. still, a masterpiece.

now i will add that alone in the dark: the new nightmare is, for me, what makes the holy trinity. it has its own story to tell with exquisite dialogue and neat fun with radio chatter and the flashlight. not as good as the others but damn replayable in my book. great atmosphere. really gorgeous game

Well put.
>>
>>12883389
Silent Hill and it's not even close.
>>
>>12883389
i tried both of these games and wanted to like them but the controls are awful
>>
>>12883848
no they really aren't. tank controls are well adapted for the gameplay design in both games. having to steer around enemies is the secret sauce that makes them work.
>>
Do people even like any Silent Hill games that aren't 2 or the one where you play as the girl?
>>
Silent Hill only exists because of Resident Evil. SH's entire shtick is "let's take a look at what Resident Evil did and do the exact opposite".
It was basically trying to be to survival horror what Die Hard was to action movies (except in a forced way, because Die Hard didn't mean to change the genre).
Trained special forces -> every day guy
claustrophobic indoor enviroment -> focus on outdoor exploration
focus on guns -> focus on melee
limited inventory -> unlimited
etc etc
>>
>>12883879
very allegorical.
>>
>>12883878
yeah they like 1 and a few bits in 4.
>>
>>12883848
low iq issue
>>
>>12883389
RE easily. SH has artistic merit but as a game it's shit.
>>
>>12883879
Indoor areas like "spooky mansion" and "police station (formerly spooky mansion)" with nonsensical layouts were also replaced with environments like "a school" and "a hospital" with realistic floorplans. Which is ok in theory but in practice they were boring as fuck to navigate, even when the textures turned into rusty barbed wire instead of tile and wallpaper.
>>
>>12883389
Resident Evil is great, but the fact is it didn't scare me and the other 11-year-olds shitless playing in the middle of the day with the Sun shining through the window the way Silent Hill did. I think once you start solving some puzzles and shoot some zombies in the head the fear factor and Shock factor kind of wane, While Silent Hill keeps you feeling uncomfortable the entire way through.
>>
>>12883389
His face confuses me.
>>
>>12883389
Silent Hill is a technical marvel for the PS1 and is a lot smoother overall compared to RE.
>>
>>12884172
so does the gun. the whole image looks like ai

Resident evil 1: avaible on steam.

Silent hill 1: not avaible on steam.

The winner is resident evil 1.

It's intended to be confusing. The bad ass muscular action hero posing with his gun is meant to be reminiscent of 80's action movies posters; but at the same time they added the shadow of monsters and a half scared face.

What the cover is saying is
>This is a manly mature game which is like all the classic 80's action movies you love
>but at the same time it's going to scare the shit out of even the manliest men, and that's okay

It's actually a brilliant cover which manages to say everything is game is about to to its target audiance by subverting tropes they are familiar with. See for instance the gun that is made out of two guns with this pose, a direct subconscious reference to the poster to Rambo II.

People these days are faggots and don't get it which is why they don't understand this cover, because the 80's action hero tropes don't mean anything to anyone anymore. These days the equivalent cover would have to put 6-7 characters all with different sex and ethnicity and weight (because "I'm not watching the movie unless there is at least ONE character that looks like MEEEEE!") all super imposed but with different scale that makes no sense, with blur everywhere and then make half of them look bored (because badass doesn't exist) and the other half their mouths wide open and bulging eyes to represent "I'm scared!" (because no subtlety). Maybe you'd get it then.

stfu holy shit. you’re wrong on so many levels and just making shit up
>>
>>12883912
Good point, locations in Silent Hill are much more realistic, even their otherworld versions. Because Resident Evil was surreal so it needed to be the opposite.
>>
>>12884670
i was running around with a katana being chased by demonic children and talked to this old witch about drugs used in the town and then a ufo came. way more realistic than that resident evil research lab poppycock
>>
>>12883389
Play both what’s wrong with you
>>
>>12883389
SH1 is IMO the scariest game ever made, but RE1 is more fun, not really comparable besides being loosely in the same genre
>>
>>12883879
>focus on guns -> focus on melee
admittedly I played on easy, but I remember having hundreds of rounds midway through SH1
>>
>>12884496
>People these days are faggots and don't get it which is why they don't understand this cover
I was mainly referring to how his eye placement is wrong. Christ you're an insufferable overanalyzing faggot.
