Everything in the Mario 64 iceberg is retarded hysterical bullshit.
>>
>>12883862
I'd believe it. Adding that "We hope so" bit at the bottom sounds like a cheeky little joke that would be right at home in Mario.
>>
>>12883965
very true. It fits really well.
>>
>>12883965
>>12883970
I don't think anything was cheeky or conspiratorial, that's the problem with the M64 icebergs/creepypastas. There's exactly zero substantial beta content, confirmed by leaks. Even Sonic 2 has something, except the scrapped zones were shit.

"Eternal Star - We hope so" is just a regular dumb Japaneseism for a tombstone, like "Rest in peace" is. There's no lorebuilding intent.
>>
>>12883975
I can't speak for the other anon, but I don't think we we're implying anything conspiratorial like that, just that it's silly.
And yeah I agree it sounds like a weird early mario japaneseism.
>>
>>12883980
I'm not accusing anyone ITT, just the tendies that would say "The devs knew this would be the absolute greatest game in history and slipped in as many hidden messages inside the cart data as possible." Which would be ok if redditors didn't churn out unfounded bullshit faster than anyone can process. Not one iceberg subject delivered. You sometimes see cuss words hidden in western games. Majora's Mask tried to be creepy, yet no subliminal messages. That should disprove most Mario 64 "lore."

>>
>>12883997
People knew it was Eternal Star over a decade ago. This is just statistical evidence that rules out everything else via brute force. It may not be "proof" but it's still 99% likely to be. To shut up the L is real hysteria

>>12884037
This was always my guess for the "star" part, something like this, I don't have an $100 AI plan or whatever to test it though.
>>
>>12884037
yeah, plus what software was used to render the text? assuming the text and font are correct, the final result doesn't have the same anti-aliasing otherwise it'd be a perfect match. did they even account for the different anti-aliasing techniques of the era? different font rendering could completely change the outcome
>>
>>12884037
Text rendering is fickle and has many implementations that output slightly different results, who knows exactly what software they were using to make this texture and if it used OS APIs or it's own
>>
>>12884054
>>12884047
Ninja'd by a whole 7 minutes. incredible
>>
This methodology is fundamentally flawed. There are always going to be several original resolution images that downscale to the same low resolution image due to the pigeonhole principle. Even if downscaling produced a 1:1 match, which this didn't, it wouldn't prove your base image is the same as the developer's base image. The brute force nature of the search means coincidental outcomes are virtually guaranteed. Even heuristically, I don't buy it. It's highly unlikely the developers hand kerned text while making a texture like this.
>>
>>12884040
>>12884076
You can't go by looks. You can simply try a dictionary attack and prove everything else is a lesser match, which is what the github did. If you end up with a mathematical 99% probablity, that's legit evidence. I don't buy "L is real." Too sensational.
>>
>>12884082
You can't dictionary attack the problem since you don't even know if the original base image was text.
>>
>>12884087
If the base image wasn't text then this is all moot to begin with. If it was, then it's Eternal Star.

>doubting the reality of L
>>
>>12884095
The AI doesn't think it's "Eternal Star" it thinks it's "Eternal Star with a bunch of random pixel spaces in between each character". I think the chance that the developers actually chose to do that might be less than the chance of them choosing to just draw something illegible that looks like text with grey pixels.
>>
>>12884105
>random pixel spaces in between each character
This is also a real possibility though, whether it's hand done or as a result of the font rendering library, scaler, aspect ratio stretching, etc. Going through all that isn't worth it so he brute forced the kerning. Point is, even with random kerning, it still matches Eternal Star most in a dictionary attack.
>>
>>12883815
This does not account for different downscaling algorithms.
>>
everyone knows it says Eternal Star but it's just funny because it does kinda look like L is Real 2401 through the n64 blur.
>>
>>12884120
I could not see that in there for life.
That last part is very obviously "star". Which also makes sense considering the plaque is on a fucking STAR statue.
>>
>>12884112
All the stuff you're hand-waving is what would actually give this any credibility. If he came out and said "Here's the software stack Nintendo used to make the textures. We can prove this is what they used with xyz evidence. Here are parameters that remake the texture 1:1 within that software stack. It's text that says bla bla bla," I would believe that. Brute forcing random configurations in an unrelated environment doesn't prove anything. The gif of the texture being upscaled (>>12883885) looks cool, I guess, but it's not a valid piece of texture archeology.
>>
>>12884127
There's no proof of kerning correctness, that is true. The brute forcing is a substitute that we can calculate probabilities with and deduce. The guy likely wrote his script in an afternoon and got enough data to write a paper with. The method could be applied to things that might actually matter instead.
>>
if the kerning and text rendering is arbitrary then you could probably make the text say anything you want and get a similar result by manipulating the font and those variables. op is a fag
>>
>>12884136
It is done arbitrarily, the AI just told us what we already know and gave us the % likeliness.

I wonder if it could be a pun translated from Japanese.
Eternal Star = The star that survives forever...
We Hope So= ...or at least we hope it will (survive forever).
Combine that with "hoshi" being the Japanese word for "star," and "hoshii" meaning "want/desire," and you'd have what might have been a Japanese pun translated to English.

I always assumed the text was just gibberish. But this is a lot more cool. Even though it's such a small piece of text, it's interesting that someone wrote this. It reflects someone's real thoughts on the game. The "L is real" nonsense that some people ridiculously still entertain should be left in the 2000s.

My thoughts as well. You need to consider what graphics editing software a Japanese developer was using at the time.

This has also overlooked the intentional loss of color information for optimising texture memory usage.
The real texture only uses 18 colors, whereas the modelled image is using 145 colors. The modelling should be snapping the downsample image's colors to the nearest indexed shades available for the best comparison.

Beyond that, it doesn't look like this is checking for the anti-aliasing method used on the font (like non, sharp, smooth, strong, or crisp, if this applies), and it may not accounting for the text layer positioning?
Slight differences in positioning produce different results upon downsampling.
As a demo, here's a 1024x512 image downsampled to 64x32 using nearest neighbour, bicubic sharp, and bilinear. The text on the right square is nudged to the right a few pixels prior to downsampling.

In spite of that, it does seem like a best-fit guess for now?

File: iv64dogkhuva1.jpg (39 KB, 542x203)

For fuck's sake, it likely doesn't say anything. The same texture was used in OOT in multiple locations, it's just meant to look like text. Why would it even be in English if it's basically a generic placeholder texture just to show that something has something written on it made by a Japanese company? Much less, specifically be English text about something Mario related?
>>
>>12885532
Good job not reading even a little bit of anything.

>>12885545
Oh I read it, it was "I used AI to take a complete guess at maybe possibly what this texture says when it's already been known for years it says nothing, and then put it all over my Twitter about how great I am." My post still stands, it doesn't say anything, is likely not even English, and is even less likely specifically Mario related. Notice how the image in >>12884451 is "decoded" similarly to laughable results.
>>
>>12885170
He used AI to "coincidentally" come to the exact same conclusion posted publicly on neogaf in 2004 and Glitterberri in 2023 on publicly crawlable forums. The font might not even be correct, to make it work he inserted random spaces.

Japanese games are always throwing in some random English text. Japan does it all the time outside of games too. It would be something Mario related because the graphic was originally made to be used with Mario and not Zelda.
>but streets of rage 2 takes place in america!
Just the first example that came to mind, and Mario is an Italian-American anyway. Peach clearly has a European style kingdom and castle too, European looking text on a plaque fits in well with that.
