Fishing is my personal favorite hobby but with winter coming soon naturally I won't be out as much, that being said what's your guys favorite retro fishing game? Mine is pic related, Legend of The River King 2 for the GBC. I really liked that it kind of touched on alot of different forms of fishing and showcased them all pretty well with different lure, bait, and fly selections and even touched on trolling for fish later in the game. Plus it delivered it all in a loosely narrative based game which is pretty rare. Usually fishing games are more arcade style or sandbox. It's only draw backs is the game feels super clunky and trying to get the bait out to fish can be a little annoying, but overall I still come back to it a good bit.So what's your favorite retro fishing games? Doesn't matter to me what platform, hell even if its just a fishing minigame in a retro game I'm down to chat and give my opinions on it.
The fishing is good in this one but man, fuck the bug collecting. And the flower picking is just there, too.If you like it check out the first GB game too, I recommend playing the original with Super Game Boy colouring rather than the GBC remake but whatever floats your boat; as well as Legend of the SEA King, an official fully translated but never released version was leaked during the gigaleaks. Nobody talks about it because they're afraid of the big N.The handheld games remained very casual, this series on console can be super hardcore though to a point I find to be insane.

>>12886847I will 1000% check that out. yeah I tried getting into the PS2 game, I had alot of fun with it personally but the cooking man, wtf what a grind. What part of the console games did you find to be too hardcore? I don't remember having too much issue completing A Wonderful Journey
>>12886857I was referring the SNES 2 and the PSX games which are Japanese only. In those games, fish don't just respawn if you re-enter the area, once you've caught them, they have to first be born and then grow. And it takes FOREVER. Even if you know the tricks like leaving a couple for reproduction and catching the fish and release them (to feed them and help them grow) it takes forever. It wouldn't be so bad except that everything is expensive so you need to catch stuff; and then to progress you need certain fish of a certain size. In the PSX game in some cases it's like looking for a needle in a haystack and even once you find the needle you have to let it go because it's still not big enough yet, and repeat. There are also a lot more gear and types of bait and the fish are very specific about what they can be caught with. Also there are several characters, each with different goals, but the world is consistent between them so if you caught everything with the first guy and then switch to another character you find yourself in a mostly empty world.it can be crazy hardcore
>>12886854Never played but it looks good from what I found on youtube
>>12886828Unironically picrel.
>>12886865Damn that sounds frustrating. I know Fishing: Barents Sea had a similar mechanic where over fishing would cause populations to decline and thus you had to switch target species or give it time for the population to recover. Which makes sense in the setting of commercial fishing, but a game like River King where it's mostly aimed at recreational fishing that seems like it almost cuts into the core gameplay too much just for sake of being difficult.
Sega Pro Bass 2
>>12886887I'll give my hot take. I love this game, but I'm a filthy peasant with no boat so I'm not super into competitive bass fishing. It's a great game and it really shines with lure selection and tactics, but I feel like it doesn't necessarily deserve the GOAT status it gets from the fishing videogame community
>>12886906Yeah but honestly don't you love Neo turf Masters but you don't have a golf set or access to a course?
>>12886847>I recommend playing the original with Super Game Boy colouring rather than the GBC remakeAny reason why?
>>12886941The SGB support in both River and Sea king are some of the best anyone's done with the SGB outside of Pokémon B/R; meanwhile some of the colouring in the GBC version looks very jarring. Also the GBC version adds 5 extra fish but they're taken straight out of Sea King, and the one they added at the very start of the second area kinda breaks the game because it's easy to catch, gives a ton of money, and you can make them respawn quickly but walking a few steps back & forth with the previous areaEither way it's no big difference between the 2 versions, I just like the SGB colouring
>>12886937Valid. I do have a kayak still but for some reason competitive bass fishing just doesn't hit for me for whatever reason. Unless of course we're actually bringing the GOAT into discussion. Picrel
Ocarina of Time
>>12887157It’s definitely good. My only complaint is that the pond is small, but at the same time it has it all. It has structure pieces in the pond, the lure is fun to use, and it’s challenging and not just luck, and the music is good. OoT does such a good job
>>12886828I wish the one for snes, 3,4 and 5 for gba legend of river king could get a translation
For me, it's trophy bass 2 for windows.
>>12888014This was actually my first exposure to a fishing video game. Funny enough my dad bought it for the family PC even though he never bass fished, despite bass fishing being my entry into fishing irl and smallmouth being so numerous where I'm from. He always fished for catfish but my dad was also an alcoholic so I guess that tracks.>>12887997Same. I honestly wish the River King series gained more traction in the US. I emulated the PS2 Wonderful Journey game last year and I had a blast playing it especially when I got the fly fishing rod. The ambience is unmatchedWhats everyone's opinions on fishing in games with little to no challenge? Idk why but I like Animal Crossing on the gamecubes approach. I like the idea of just walking around a creek/river, seeing a fish and casting at it. It's simple, but still fun and the sprites for the fish are really nicely detailed for the time. Plus the amount of fish is large enough that it's interesting and I'm always looking to catch all of them when I do play that game. I also like the fact there's a museum where you could look at all the fish you have caught. Plus certain fish being available on certain times of day or season gave me a reason to keep playing. They did it really well despite the fishing mechanic being super basic.HM on the other hand kind of does the opposite. I was excited when I got a fishing rod in FoMT but realized how lackluster fishing felt in that game. All the sprites were the same and only changed with the size of the fish. It was really only a time waster in game for me when I was waiting for something or had nothing else to do in the day. It got a little bit better with AWL since it had different species, models for the fish, and sizes but for some reason I just didn't care about fishing in the game. Granted its not the main mechanic of that series but still, I hate when games add it but it sucks and people see it as tedious and not fun or engaging.
>>12886854>>12887157Which one does it better? Also, thoughts on Let’s Fish (PS Vita)?
>>12886828Bassins' Black Bass with Hank Parker on the SNES is the goat, rented it so many times as a kid and ended up buying it CiB the first time I saw it in the wild
>>12886828
>>12887115That's not even the best fishing on GBA. That title is held by ESPN Great Outdoor Games Bass 2002.>>12889040That's not even the best fishing on SNES. That title is held by BASS Masters Classic Pro Edition. And, ftr, the actual GOAT is picrel. Which explains why ESPNGOGB'02 is the best handheld fisher, because it's part of the same series. In Japan, BOB2 was Exciting Bass 3, while the GBA game was Exciting Bass Mobile…or as I call it. Big Ol' Bas Advance.
>>12891443I have both of the Bassmasters games for the Snes, they aren't bad but comparing them to the Black Bass series is like arcade vs semi-realism, the underwater camera kills it for me.
>>12891468>the underwater camera kills it for meAnd yet the definitive list of the best /vr/ bass fishing games all have an underwater camera:>Big Ol' Bass 2 (ps1)>Bass Rise (ps1)>Bass Strike (ps2)>BASS Masters Classic Pro Edition (snes)>EA Sports Championship Bass (ps1)>ESPNGOGB'02 (gba)>Monster! Bass Fishing (gba)
>>12892367Probably why the genre died, just because you call a list definitive doesn't mean its good
>>12886828In the early 2000s, I had a fishing game that consisted of an actual handheld reel that plugged into the TV that I'd like to get some audio files from, but I have no idea what it was called or where to start looking.I remember it was set around Lake Okeechobee and one of the audio files was your guide exclaiming "What a hawker!" when you caught a big fish.
>>12886828>winter coming soon naturally I won't be out as muchNo ice fishing where you're at? Slaying perch, whiteys and pike on hard water is a totally different animal and so much fun.As for your question I enjoyed the Reel fishing series which is also by Natsume.
>>12892990Was it this?>>12893015The only good Reel Fishing title is sadly not /vr/: "The Great Outdoors" (psp).
>>12886828Amazon Trail 3rd edition. You fish with a harpoon, charge up to spear deeper fish. Not a lot of depth, but stabbing pirahna while listening to bongo drums is fun
>>12893314I'll have to look up some videos but that might be it. Thanks for the spoonfeed.
Fuck nintendo
>>12893826>Thanks for the spoonfeedAnon, I literally copy/pasted your post word-for-word into chatgpt, and that's what it spit out. Don't be such a luddite next time.
>>12886847Where to find the unreleased Sea King rom?
