Why didn't this beat the ps2? It's a much better console
>>
>>12888319
PS2 had a year head start and had a great lineup of games coming out around the time the Xbox and GameCube launched. The PlayStation brand was just too strong, especially in Europe and Japan. There’s no way the Xbox was going to make much of an impact in those regions.
>>
>>12888319
racist japanese boycotted the american console
>>
I’m still mad the OG Xbox never got a port of RE4. It would’ve been the best one.
>>
It didn't play ps1 games.
>>
>>12888347
Yeah people nowadays underestimate this feature of the PS2 because backward compatibility is taken for granted. The millions of PS1 owners out there could upgrade to the PS2 and it would play all the games they already had.
>>
>>12888319
Late to the party and a new brand, that's about it. Which is shame because Xbox and the 360 were good. I always remember how I think it was Bill Gates decided to incorporate the features that soft/hard modders implemented into original xbox into the 360 as natural improvements. Shame that the xbone fucked everything up.
>>
Why did you decide to feel raped because the console you dislike won the generation 25 years ago? Not even Kevin Nash was this much of a KWAB
>>
>>12888319
>Japanese hands are too small
>Too expensive for third worlders that only play FIFA
/thread
>>
>>12888381
I don’t know about South America, but the Xbox and PS2 were the same price here in the states. GameCube was priced $50 lower.
>>
>>12888319
PS2 was the sequel to psx, so it was a juggernaut, every european country in 1999-2000 werewaitng for ps2, it was the device that you really need a quantum leap from 32bits generation. And it was thanks to Gran Turismo and other games.

But hey don't worry anon years later, like 20 years ago xbox360 won to ps3 in next gen.
>>
an old friend of mine deliberately bought one solely because everyone else had a ps2. he figured he'd be able to play ps2 at everyone else's house, so get the other one in order to play as many games across platforms as possible. he had a dreamcast for similar reasons, and most of the gaming was done at that dude's place, played so many fun 4 player games with the bros. most xbox ports looked better, and they got online right before anyone else
>>
>>12888438
Similar experience here. Had some really fun Halo LAN parties back in the day.
>>
>>12888407
In South America the console price didn't matter. What mattered is that I could go literally anywhere and see street vendors selling PS2 games for cheap due to piracy, and could easily mod a PS2 to play pirated games by going to any of the many stores openly advertising such services.
>>
>>12888462
Did piracy save the ps2?
>>
>>12888345
If anything RE4 should've been an Xbox 360 launch title since that system launched a month after the RE4 PS2 port released.
Instead it took another 6 years before you could play RE4 on the 360.
>>
>>12888515
Same as psx.
>>
could Bernie Stolar save the Xbox?
>>
First year or two xbox 3rd party games skipped xbox or came later than ps2
>>
>>12888462
Xbox piracy is far better but the more I think about it the reason the PS2 won the piracy war was probably due to variety of games. It just had absolutely everything. You can want to play some genres and have games, some of which are extremely good, but not have a ton of choice.

That and maybe hard drives were astronomically expensive and there was no home internet access for the xbox to really shine.
>>
>>12888656
>That and maybe hard drives were astronomically expensive and there was no home internet access
Back then I had dial-up. If piracy involved me downloading games, which I wouldn't even know where to download from, it would be impossible. Buying a hard drive and connecting it to a console? Too complicated. Meanwhile, I could just go anywhere and find tons of different PS2 games to buy for somewhere between 2 and 5 dollars. You'd also just buy blank DVDs and ask that one friend with a burner to copy another friend's games, so your whole friend circle had access to the same games more or less
>>
>>12888525
>DVD-R copies
Cheap and gay. Poor faggotry.
>>
>>12888669
Yeah, I'm not surprised. 10 reals for a copy of devil may cry with jay-z music hacked in, the complications of having a 120gb hard drive in your xbox stacked with games and emulators was simply not happening at the time in south america.
>>

>>

The association with PlayStation and FIFA in Latin America is just too strong even though it’s also on Xbox. Same with Europe.

I like the duchess
>>
I heard the controller is bad, but whenever I use it I have a really fun time.
>>
>>12888771
The original Duke model was an obvious evolution of the Dreamcast controller design. Similar shape, similar triggers and memory card slots.
>>
>>12888778
The triggers are sproingier and the black/white buttons are in a better place but the skewed face buttons are not to my taste.
>>
Spiritual successor to Dreamcast with endless supply of cash to keep it afloat.
>>
As someone who grew up with an Xbox and loved it, I concede that it was competing against one of the greatest consoles of all time with an unbelievably varied library with something for almost any gamer.

And I obviously mean the PS2, not the shitcube.
>>
>>12888809
I went with the Xbox/Cube combo and don’t really regret not having a PS2 because I’m not into JRPGs or Sony’s first party games from that gen. The only games I really missed out on at the time were Snake Eater and Silent Hill 3.
>>
>>12888818
Even if you don’t like jrpgs it’s got a lot of kino like Ace Combat, Katamari Damacy, Omnimusha, God Hand and a lot more quirky third party stuff
>>
>>12888842
Yeah, I guess. Although Onimusha did get an Xbox release.

was it my childhood or was newest tech packaged better then? Everything about new tech has been getting less human in its presentation. Or is it just aging. Did our parents think all the new gadgets just looked tacky back in the day?

Do modern console boxes still have pictures of games on the back? I always liked that.

the 360 was fucking garbage
>>
>>12889029
People like to hate on XBL being a paywalled service, but it was significantly better than what Sony had even if it was free. PS3 was missing a bunch of features in its early days.
>>
>>12888357
>backward compatibility is taken for granted nowadays
No it isn't. It was briefly a thing for some specific consoles during 2-3 console generations. With the PS4 gen it went back to not being a thing. Nobody expects it and I'm not sure anybody did
>>
>>12889042
The PS4 not having backward compatibility was more to do with the PS3’s wildly different architecture. The PS4 signaled Sony finally giving up their weird proprietary bullshit and going with a more standardized design. I’d say BC is pretty much an expectation now that consoles are pretty much just PC hardware.

Buy an xbox.
Samsung drive.
Can pirate everything.
Awesome.
Designed off the dreamcast because they stole the blueprints and just upgraded it.
Worked flawlessly.

Xbox 360
Standard edition gets rrod.
Elite edition gets rrod.
Falcon edition gets rrod.
Slim edition overheats because the heatsink is 40% plastic (no I'm not joking) and only has the cpu as intake for Air, no exhaust fan so that heat just stays trapped inside.
Xbox E edition - 95% of people don't know this even exists.
All have shit disk trays that will ruin a disk if you even fart near it.
Power-packs known to just stop working because of cheap materials used.
Retarded ideas to fix them ranging from wrapping a wet towel around an electrical device to putting it in an oven for 4 minutes and more.

The 360 was fucking garbage. It showed how bad things were when they had to make something themselves and instead of making a good product they decided to jew the customer on buying pro/arcade/elite models
>>
>>12888319
No fame and then the lack of Silent Hill 3, Metal Gear Solid 3 and Resident Evil 4 just solidified the disinterest, if it had these three games it would've been much more popular for sure.
>>
>>12888319
It's missing too many game genres.
>platformers
You get Blinx and, uh... Voodoo Vince
>JRPGs
Nonexistent
>strategy
Nope
>survival horror
Hope you like Silent Hill 4
>>
>>12889085
It’s worth noting that the Xbox did end up slightly outselling the GameCube despite only being on the market for four years when the 360 launched.
>>
>>12888319
>It's a much better console

Bold of you. The Xbox barely qualify as a console, it was more like a mediocre early 2000's PC stuffed into an (for console standards) oversized 'box' -hence the name-
>>
>>12889101
Why is that a bad thing though? Sony’s Jap architecture tender to be too convoluted.
>>
>>12889071
>The 360 was fucking garbage
As bad as the hardware was, it at least had games during its heyday unlike certain Sony consoles of the era
>>
>>12889103

>Why is that a bad thing though?

It technically isn't since the end result is a machine capable of running whatever you throw at. I personally think of it as the contemporary equivalent of a Steam Deck or a mini PC, like something made out of regular stuff with nothing special to talk about.

>Sony’s Jap architecture tender to be too convoluted.

So? As long as it is capable of doing something it's just a matter of time for devs to figure it out, that's why late stage games tend to be the best for any console, even the 'easy' ones.
>>
>>12889071
>Slim edition overheats
that's new to me.
i've rgh'd 3.0 2 slims and both were cool. granted they were late corona models. i still configured dashlaunch to keep cpu and gpu at 65c as a precaution.
i have a slim e and this thing is mostly silent, even with dashlaunch set at 65c.

Yeah it can.
https://github.com/brentdc-nz/PCSX-ReloadedX
>>
>>12889254
Yes, but upgrading to the PS2 allowed existing PS1 owners to play the new games and watch DVDs in addition to still being able to play their PS1 games on it.
>>
>>12889254
>>12889265
Nigga, nobody cared about PS1 games after they got their hands on a PS2. All my friends who also bought a PS2 couldn't stop talking about the latest games. I really don't know what my mom did with my PS1 back then. I hope she donated/sold it and didn't throw it in the trash.
So many games coming out every month. The huge graphical leap is also a major factor. Gran Turismo 2 to 3 and MGS to 2 were mind blowing. PS1 games felt extremely dated and we all agree with this.

Xbox made you buy a gay remote and receiver thay took up one of your ports. That was gay.
>>
>>12889505
I was probably younger than you but I really didn't care much about the generational difference. technical acuity was secondary to just the basic premise of the game and whether or not that was cool to me. I'd happily go from max payne to gex.
>>
>>12889585
>>12889676
nah... you're using your old ass biased brain to make assumptions.
There's no way a child or teen could care about games from the previous generation.
A poor friend of mine, who was stuck with his PS1, couldn't stand PS1 games anymore after I showed him some of my latest games. Whenever we met, he begged me to invite him to play GTA VC and NFSU. At his house, he was constantly begging his mom to buy him a PS2. I still feel sorry for that kid. Seeing him playing Blade,Tomb Raider, NFS III made me realize how privileged I was.
>>

>The PS1 they already had.
That one went inside a closet or wardrobe somewhere to collect dust. My PS2 was permanently connected to the TV, and I can't also have my PS1 connected to the same TV. Connecting and disconnecting was a hassle since the cables go behind the TV, and there's not enough space for both consoles anyway.
>>
>>12888319
It's both more expensive and less powerfull than the PS2

https://blogstation2.wordpress.com/tag/evolution/

>They say the Xbox is going to be either 600mhz or 1000mhz. The PS2 is only 300mhz. But if you can have your background engine running in 10% CPU and 50% VU1 time, then you have far more power.
>I don’t think anyone has ever overstated the complexity of programming for the PS2. But, on the other hand, the Xbox libraries won’t allow you anywhere near the actual hardware, so there is little room for optimisation. Plus, the Xbox doesn’t have the high speed vector units of the PS2, which may be why even the best Xbox games run at 30Hz.
>I seriously doubt we would have been able to make Ratchet and Clank run at 60Hz on the Xbox without drastically reducing the number of moving objects.

The point here is that backward compatibility is just a gimmick, not a major selling point, just like the compatibility with DVDs, CDs, Blu-rays, cloud streaming... Most people didn't care about that back then.
The PSX version of the PS2 flopped in Japan because nobody cared about a video game console that could be a media center with various functionalities.
Panasonic's Gamecube failed in Japan because nobody cared about DVDs.
Nobody bought a Wii to play Gamecube games.
Nobody bought an Xbox 360 because of compatibility with many original Xbox games or to watch DVDs, netflix or because of the HD-DVD format.
Nobody bought a PS3 to watch Blu-rays. Sony removed backward compatibility from the PS3 because nobody cared.
Nobody bought a PS4 to watch Blu-rays or Netflix.
Nobody bought an Xbox One to be their main media center (as Microsoft wanted). It backfired very badly tho.
Nobody upgraded their PCs to run games from 10 years ago.

99% bought the latest video game console to play the latest games. The console with the best game library wins. These are the facts.
>>
>>12890860
Backwards compatibility isn’t a gimmick.
>>
>>12890868
>Backwards compatibility isn’t a gimmick.
That's true by today's standards. Back then, from the consumer's pov, it was.
Tech was evolving fast, every gen leap was huge... no time or reason to waste time with outdated stuff.
>>
>>12890871
Backward compatibility was a standard feature included in all PS2s. It might not have been the primary selling point, but it’s certainly not a gimmick since it worked as intended.
>>
>>12890871
>>12890872
If we’re talking PlayStation, Six-Axis could more accurately be described as a gimmick since it was mostly dropped once the patent lawsuit was settled and they released the DualShock 3.
>>
>>12890872

>>
Inconsistent third party support, and people being happy enough with a PS2. Not to mention Sony was already well established in the gaming world at that point.
>>

On fat PS2s, the PS1 processor was not only used for PS1.
>In PS2 Mode: The PS1 processor was repurposed to handle Input/Output (I/O) operations, managing data from the disc drive, memory cards, and controllers.
PS1 hardware was kept because it was used for other stuff. Later, with the PS2 slim model, they shifted to emulation (AND NOBODY FUCKING CARED)
>>
>>12890929
Okay? You’re still misusing the term gimmick. How is offering backward compatibility a gimmick?
>>
>>12890940

>>12890940
>A gimmick is a novel device, trick, or idea created mainly to catch people's attention or boost appeal, often with little or no real, lasting value.
That's 100% true when contextualized. As I said, you need to stop judging backward compatibility with the current perspective.
Today, I wish the PS3 had never abandoned native backward compatibility and that the Xbox 360 had native backward compatibility instead of emulation. Back then, people didn't care about any of thhis
>>
>>12890961
What’s the functional difference if the game plays?

It did well. It had no chance in Japan or Europe, and it didn't even try to sell to the third world. It was basically north america only and it still beat the Gamecube, which was following up on the n64's good performance in north america.
