What's /vr/'s favorite handheld beat'em up?

Does this genre translate well to small screens?
>>
Double Dragon Advance for retro stuff obviously, it's the best version of DD1. The Star Wars game in your picrel is good too. TMNT would have been good if not for the obnoxious amount of enemy iframes. The genre was pretty good on GBA and later portables but not that many were made, and the only one that surpassed the arcade classic Dungeons & Dragons Shadow Over Mystara was Dragon's Crown.

got the 1cc in Astro Boy recently (deathless, hard mode, jp version)

It was my first treasure game and my second beat em up. Loved the game. combat is extremely tactile. the shmup levels were fun too. but i dont know if it's an issue with beat em ups in general but I found it a smidge too easy. was able to 1cc it in just a couple of days. i didnt even metafag or watch a playthrough either. just maxxed out health and laser and went to town.

Action games play great on the gba. devs are really intentional about legibility. by the 00s they had already developed 2d action games for decades at that point, so their skill in the craft was really matured

Why are beat em ups called belt scrollers?
>>
>>12890291
I dont consider all of them actually beat em ups.
If you cant combo with different animations, grab the enemies and have a way to go up and down, they're just an action platformer

>>12890379
in japan they dont do those autistic distinctions. a beat em up is simply under the umbrella of "ACT" (action) game. the same as platformer. they dont differentiate between shmup and rail shooter either. Both are STG.

Simulation and turn based strategy are also under the same category, which is why Fire Emblem and Sakura Wars have dating sim elements

>they're just an action platformer

Action platformers, without any platforming.
Brillant!

>OP has Dragon Ball and Astro Boy, single plane beat 'em ups

Kung-Fu Master/Spartan X is the first beat 'em up and it's not a belt scroller but single plane, you can't combo, you can't grab enemies. It's also not an anything platformer, it has no platforming.

Game genres are weird. I mean, let's take the first Shinobi. You gain a huge score bonus if you beat a level without shurikens or ninpo. In which case it plays similarly to games like Spartan X, Vigilante or Ninja Warriors, all beat 'em ups. Main difference is that you only have one attack and die in one hit, but it's very similar. Is it a beat 'em up then? However, unless you want extra lives, most people ignore scoring and play normally, in which case it's a Rolling Thunder clone, a run and gun. Or let's take the first Street Fighter. It's basically a more elaborate Spartan X but as a boss rush game, is it really a different genre? Maybe the Japanese have a point and calling everything action is better

>a run and gun.
These are also STG like shmup, but sometimes they can be called ASTG, action shooting
>>
>>12890378
Not quite, belt scrollers like Double Dragon are beat 'em ups, but not every beat 'em up is a belt scroller.

>beat 'em up
Double Dragon, Golden Axe, Final Fight, Streets of Rage, Riot Zone, The Ninja Warriors Again, Battle Zeque Den
>belt scroller
Double Dragon, Golden Axe, Final Fight, Streets of Rage, Riot Zone
>non-belt scroller
The Ninja Warriors Again, Battle Zeque Den

What's the game in the middle?
I know the one on the top left is Star Wars-related Is it actually good? Or did you just pick a random beat-em-up for this 3x3 collage?
>>
>>12890305
I heard DDA is really hard. Like, REALLY hard.

your mom's boobs when I hold'em and beat'em up.

Whats the difference between a beat em up and belt scroller?
>>
>>12890671
Beat em up are a real genre
>>
>>12890671
Belt scroller is because the camera makes it feel like you're moving your character on top of a conveyor belt as it scrolls. Not all beat 'em ups are belt scrollers, some are 2D single pane like Astro Boy or Ninja Warriors, some are 3D like God Hand or Spikeout
>>
>>12890551
Only on the high difficulties. Content-wise it's like an expanded version of the arcade Double Dragon with more abilities and levels. It's worth a try if you've never played it.
>>12890549
Middle game is Dancing Sword: Senkou (JP only) and it's ass. The Star Wars game is the GBA (and DS port) version of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and it's pretty good.
>>
>>12890681
So they're just side scrollers beat em ups?
>>
>>12890687
>The Star Wars game is the GBA (and DS port) version of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and it's pretty good.
Thank you. There was a time when Lucas Arts actually made good games.

Deathless 100%? You had to die to 100% the game...
>>
>>12890783
It was an Ubisoft game actually, so back when they made good games
>>
>>12890848
rebirth is post game. game rolls the credits and resets your score when you finish the birth arc
>>
>>12890674
and hack and slash?
>>
>>12890671
You didn't get a real answer so I'll clear it up. They are very similar in most respects, but Beat 'Em Up refers to any of these kinds of games where there's little to no platforming and your character moves along fighting various waves of enemies on a single path. Belt Scroller specifically refers to games like that where it's not just a 2D plane, but like a conveyor belt where the player and enemies move up and down along the path as well as forward.

Streets of Rage and Battletoads on Game Gear
Double Dragon and Battletoads on Game Boy

Have you guys played that AWESOME Bruce Lee for GBA though? Does that count?
