Things you genuinely don’t need in a game and are proven frivolous constantly:
Cutscenes
Continues
Player/weapon models
Reloading
Anything other than hood view in a racer/driving game
>>
>>12890791
Proven frivolous by whom?
>>
>>12890791
I see many frivolous things in that picture.
>>
Yes, you don't "need" those things to make a good game. But some types of good games benefit or depend on those things.
>>
>>12890969
And of course, other games can benefit from not having them.
>>
>>12890791
continues are the devs saying "you didnt beat the game champ. but do you want to keep practicing, or maybe even see the credits? fyi you still didnt beat the game btw"
>>
>>12890976
In arcade games at least. In some console games, continues are basically treated as super extra lives that you can collect through the game.
>>
>>12890791
>correct
>if the games has a prover save and load system sure
>correct
>if your game is 20 minutes long maybe
>no, fuck off
>>
>>12890791
>Cutscenes
They're nice in moderation, but a lot of games overdo them.
>Continues
If you're going for an arcade gameplay loop with lives and points, they're an essential part of that. For other games, they are superfluous.
>Player/weapon models
wat
>Reloading
They don't fit in Quake, but they're nice for more tactical shooters like CS.
>Anything other than hood view in a racer/driving game
This is just stupid. I like being able to see my car in third person, thank you very much.
>>
>>12890980
some console games limit your continues, but "beating" the game using the limited number of continues is like getting a D on the test instead of an F. you still didn't pass, you just failed a little less.
>>
>>12890997

I mean it's not a pretty way of beating it, but very few people would say you haven't beat something like Earthworm Jim or Mega Man X because you used continues. Like if you want to treat it that way that's fine, but it's your own self-imposed challenge view rather than what's generally accepted by people.

Anyway, I just think it's neat how continues became like a second layer of lives in some games. Like Sonic, you earn continues. They make you restart the entire Zone instead of from the last checkpoint. I can't think of any arcade games that let you earn more continues like that.

What really bugs me though is stuff like in my pic here. People who flat out don't get that some games are designed around having a limited supply of lives.
>>
>>12890976
Then why do they have limited continues in some games?
>>
>>12890997
Show me any dev that confirms that as true.
>>
>>12891003
I play action games to measure my performance and test my skills, sounds like you're confused and you play them like adventure games. like you're slogging through a movie.
>>12891013
The game usually has subtle ways of letting you know if you beat it the intended way or not. it will reset the score or put an asterisk on it or not register the score. i can believe that there are some western games where the devs consider using continues to be legitimate, but no japanese dev would ever do that. credit feeding and continues is taboo in japan. game over means game over.
>>
>>12891025
I play games because they are fun.
>>
>>12891025
You are talking purely about arcade game continues where you instantly respawn with no penalty except your coins. Other anons are referring to the type that are either limited and/or force you to repeat a stage with regular lives instead being used for checkpoint positions or used to revive you where you died.
>>
>>12891025
>i can believe that there are some western games where the devs consider using continues to be legitimate, but no japanese dev would ever do that
There are plenty of old console games designed around unlimited continues or use continues as a secondary life resource layer. Generally only ones like shmups or games designed more specifically like arcade games (or arcade game ports) make it feel like you didn't actually beat the game.
>credit feeding and continues is taboo in japan.
For arcade games. I wouldn't say "taboo" either, credit feeding and continuing is a legitimate way to see the rest of the game and/or practice. It just isn't counted as a clear.
>>
>>12891030
>>12891029
I'm talking about regular console games, like ristar, legendary axe, pn03, panzer dragoon, ninja five-o, astro boy gba

these are all games i beat this year without continues. even though the game gives them to you, each of these games has systems in place to let you know you aren't meant to be using them to beat the game. they are a tool for practicing your next run because the current one is over.
>>
>>12891038
I doubt all of them do and even if they do, that's a very select group of games picked out of a massive amount of others that don't. Score reset also doesn't really count since most completely ignore the score mechanics to begin with in console games and it resetting is the equivalent of locking yourself out of a secret boss or item because you died somewhere. I would be more willing to believe jap devs demanded no continue clears as the "true ending" if i saw some head dev interviews confirming what you claim.
>>
>>12891025
Excellent troll, this is an evergreen tactic, asserting an arbitrary standard as a universal one. I think the main source of irritation for this is the persistent assertion of the false standard, without actually addressing anyone's replies. It also galls a person's pride, since it casts aspersions on their gamer cred, and by implication aggrandizes whoever says it; in this case, very strongly implying.

As far as your argument, couldn't you assert an even stricter arbitrary standard that any game you've ever died (or even gotten hit) in is a game you've lost, because you didn't play it perfectly every time?
>>
>>12891038
Yeah, Panzer Dragoon for example is a game I'd consider more like the arcade approach to continues. Ristar less so, though it does reset your score. I suppose how much a game feels designed around scoring is part of it too. Sonic and Mario have score systems, but not very meaningful ones. Scores are an afterthought in many console games.

Continues in something like Donkey Kong Country are treated differently than in Panzer Dragoon or a shmup.
>>12891054
If you die in the game, you should treat it like dying in real life. You failed the quest.

Arcadefags have such a reductive view of what games can and should be. They're the vidya equivalent of cartoon fans who think animation shouldn't be anything more than slapstick with talking animals.
>>
>>12891051
>that's a very select group of games picked out of a massive amount of others that don't. Score reset also doesn't really count since most completely ignore the score
I can only talk about the games I played. You ignoring score is on you. There were retro games only a couple of kilobytes big that still thought score was important enough to include. Just because it looks like random numbers doesn't mean it's meaningless.
>>12891054
>As far as your argument, couldn't you assert an even stricter arbitrary standard that any game you've ever died (or even gotten hit) in is a game you've lost, because you didn't play it perfectly every time?
It's not arbitrary at all. I named games. Dying doesn't reset the score to zero. They give you a number of lives and a mechanism for getting extra lives for a reason.
>>12891056
>Sonic and Mario have score systems, but not very meaningful ones. Scores are an afterthought in many console games.
Score is there to tell you how you did. Maybe you don't know the difference between 800,000 and 900,000, but it resetting to zero is the game telling you something went wrong
>Continues in something like Donkey Kong Country
That's a western game. I don't know the culture of UK gaming
>>
>>12891021
Because, for the most part, games used to be balanced around a certain amount of continues, just like console games give you healthbars and lives to let you get away with some mistakes. Arcade game developers looking at freaks of nature 1ccing their games while complaining about easy difficulty and deciding to pander to them is pretty much the 90's equivalent of balancing online multiplayer games exclusively for compfags.

>Score is there to tell you how you did. Maybe you don't know the difference between 800,000 and 900,000, but it resetting to zero is the game telling you something went wrong
Yeah it "tells you how you did", not whether you beat the game or not. It's just not always a very good metric for how well you did. By all means, brag about your Super Mario Bros. high score if you want. It's just nobody will care much.

People care a lot more about speedruns over score in many games for a good reason.
>>12891225
>That's a western game. I don't know the culture of UK gaming
Super Mario Bros. 3 then. The locks and the fortresses are designed around when you restart after using a continue. It's a long ass game when played without warps, they expected people to use some continues (not hard to avoid it though, considering it's trivial to build lives).

It's annoying, but don't let it turn you off playing arcade games. Arcade games are great, and most players don't talk like these people. When it's not just trolling, it's generally a sign of insecurity. You rarely see actually great players with serious accomplishments acting this way.

Yeah, that's what I mean. You can farm points and lives trivially, so the score doesn't mean much.
