Halo > Half-Life 2
Okie dokie
Half-Life 1 > Halo
Doom>Quake>everything else
>>12891336C’mon. Man up and compare apples to apples. Marathon 1-3 to HL1 + OF + BS. Halo 2 to HL2. Halo 3 to the Orange Box.
>>12891336Alrighty then. Really glad you told us.
>>12891336Ive been working with hammer and it's really a huge limitation how small the hl1 maps are, and looking at hl2 it's a shitfest of half assed work. I love it, but it's trash. Halo is quite refined and I can't deny its far more polished even with the fucking retarded second half of the campaign. The driving levels in hl2 are a monsterous example of how shit the levels and scripting are, only outdone in ridiculous lacklustery by far cry 2's driving. Seeing the source engine limitations makes it a absolute wonder how it doesn't fucking run on the Xbox worth a shit with ps2 silent hill render distance and downscaled textures. Tf2 is (and I loved it before f2p) a glorified boomer shooter, nothing here was invented by valve other than the art and balancing. Halo has maps bungie made themselves, (good) vehicle combat, more than 2 game modes, oh yeah actual multiplayer that was part of the game and didn't fuck off until 3 years later. TF2 release the same year as halo fucking 3. I loved pre hat tf2 but seriously it launched in the days of hurricane Katrina and fat kid, it's a one trick pony and a wore the fuck out old one. Truly incredible that valve rode the hype train for a decade before doing fucking nothing ever after
>>12891336I agree, but both are good and different enough that one doesn't replace the other.
>>12891338The Xen chapters are worse than Two Betrayals, Keyes and The Maw though
Half-life 2 was the game that made many adult people take video games way more seriously. At least that's what I remember.
>>12891571it was more of the source engine tech than the actual game itself because developers used to care about physics and shit
>>12891464You can limit that to the library and two betrayals. Keyes had enough new content and the different enemies made the ship replayable. The library is a slog and two betrayals just sucked ass. Xen is more akin to if 343 kept going for way too long.
>>12891464only the section where you have to jump down on the platforms and then on the moving blue thing all while getting shot at is cancer. that should be deleted from existence. the rest of the xen levels are tough but fair, akin to some of the later halo levels on legendary Tbh.
>>12891571Extremely zoomercoded reply. Video games didn't get taken seriously at least by the general normie crowd until the Xbox 360 and PS3 gens with games like Gears of War and shit like that. Gaming was nerdy and seen as a joke until like late PS2 era.
Both fucking suck and ruined first person shooters for like 2 decades
>>12892227>Extremely zoomercoded reply. Are you talking about yourself, idiot?
>>12891336EVERY OTHER FPS IS BETTER THAN HL2It has the worst gun set and level design and is very repetitive
I preferred HL2 first plays. It's one of those "you had to be there" things because the graphics were a big part of it if you had a GPU.Halo CE is noticeably more fun to replay. HL2 felt like a chore when I replayed it a year or two ago.As an aside, Counter Strike is better multiplayer than Halo.
HL2 always felt overrated for me. I played HL1 long after release (early 10s) and I felt it was more immersive and had better gunplay.HL2 just felt bad to me. I did play a decent amount of Halo 1 and 2 before picking up HL, but I return to both franchises relatively often.HL1 and Opposing Force are like 10/10 for me. Halo is great but has issues (second half of the campaign, Halo 2 is a bit mid, Halo 3 has too much fluff to it). But I prefer it to HL2. Too many gimmicks, gunplay isn’t good, I don’t like shooting combine, characters are annoying. Feels overrated for me
>>12891383What the fuck?!
>>12891336Yeah, I don't know. Halo is cool but HL2 Deathmatch was top doge.
>>12892442I was there. Played on my crap FX 5500.Was super boring and repetitive after 3 hours. It ruined Counter Strike as well.
how do i beat the strider level near the end of episode 2? i never have enough ammo to deal with the hunters first before the striders reach the base.
HL2 is one of the most immersive games ever made. But man do the vehicle sections fucking suck and ruin the pacing.
>>12892424HL2 was impressive for the physics, face animations, etc. The early guns suck and the better guns you get later never seem to have enough ammo. I did notice the level design was pretty repetitive last time I played. It kept introducing new things to do then would make you do it a few times in a row before moving on. I still enjoyed playing it but it had some steps back in game design compared to HL1.
>>12891390What the hell, dude?Half-Life is one of the most revolutionary games ever created!
The Xen levels are probably one of the worst last ~15% of any game out there which is hilariously juxtaposed by how good everything before was. Not even the 2nd half of Halo was that bad. I give them credit for creating a truly alien feeling world but they just feel like dogshit to get through.
>>12892993>physicsIt uses a 3rd party engine for the physics simulation, called Havok. Valve didn't do shit.Destroy All Humans, Psi Ops, Halo 2, Ghost Recon 2... all also feature impressive physics thanks to Havok. Psi Ops and Halo 2 were released before HL2 btw. >face animationsSilent Hill 3 came out in 2003 and feature way better character models and face animations.
>>12893075i liked the xen levels
Halo's singleplayer is too empty. They make these gigantic spaces, and forget to put anything in them. You never see more than like a dozen enemies on screen at a time(even then, those fights are a rarity and always involve Flood) and there are barely any secrets to reward exploration. The actual combat is fun, but everything else leaves much to be desired.
>>12892335100% truth right here. I don't replay either of them. They're both boring. I replay other FPS games regularly.
>>12893170>They make these gigantic spaces, and forget to put anything in themkek this nigga just walked past all the vehicles
>>12893170You missed all the secrets in the game? How? They even point them out to you early on with radio chatter where your reinforcements get downed.
>>12893176It's still a boring nothing space if you have 2km of driving while shooting at an enemy vehicle maybe twice. But it goes beyond the gigantic barren canyons, the huge interiors have basically nothing in them. Look at The Silent Cartographer. What's down in that expansive underground section? A single camo powerup that runs out before you can take advantage of it.So many random dead ends and nooks that could contain something, but never do.>>12893185You can count the secrets on one hand. There is fucking nothing in the game to explore and find. Just exploration for the sake of it.
>>12893189I don't see a point with engaging with someone who needs to lie about the scale of the game and then deny of the scale of everything in it.
>>12893216Please, point out any part where you think I'm wrong. Because I can just as easily open up the game now and show parts that have absolutely nothing going on in them.
>>12893226>parts that have absolutely nothing going on in them.Yes, that is possible with just about every game.Halo is packed with secrets and battles that scale in size and intensity, the last half of the game has these packed fights with squad of flood engaging with platoons of covenant and you get to choose which side to fight with. There's _dozens_ of enemies in these engagements. The later banshee sections have you juggling groups of opposing banshees, stationary turrets, high tier elites, Wraiths (sometimes several) and a variety of enemies wielding fuel rods and teams of hunters pecking you off.Nevermind your denial about secrets, there's caches of weapons between basically every encounter. The game uses red blood as a major tell for this, whenever you see red blood you can find significant amounts of gear.
>>12893236>Halo is packed with secretsIt's really not.>and battles that scale in size and intensityAnd they rarely ever hit the upper limit of size or intensity.> the last half of the game has these packed fights with squad of flood engaging with platoons of covenant You're exaggerating lmaoThe closest you get to that is the Hunter section in Keyes, and the end of Two Betrayals. 343 and The Library don't have Covenant, and The Maw is all small encounters.>The later banshee sections have you juggling groups of opposing banshees, stationary turrets, high tier elites, Wraiths (sometimes several) and a variety of enemies wielding fuel rods and teams of hunters pecking you off.You mean one section in all of Two Betrayals before you fly up to the generator and then through the tunnel? You barely get to fly in the first game.>there's caches of weapons between basically every encounterThey're not secrets if they're on the critical path.
>>12893250>It's really not.And yet, it is.>And they rarely ever hit the upper limit of size or intensity.Sure it does, by the time the flood gets introduced the cuffs are off, they continue to escalate the size and complexity of encounters.>You're exaggerating lmaoI grant the possibility it's more of a Legendary thing, my most recent playthrough being Legendary difficulty.>You mean one section in all of Two Betrayals before you fly up to the generator and then through the tunnel? One of the best vehicle encounters of the game right there.>They're not secrets if they're on the critical path.No wonder you think there aren't any, you missed them.
>>12893258>And yet, it is.Then prove it. Show me even a couple of these supposed secrets. Are they in this side area that has nothing going on? No enemies, no items, nothing?>by the time the flood gets introduced the cuffs are offlol>they continue to escalate the size and complexity of encounters.Until TB is over and they forget about it entirely. From Final Run to getting that last Banshee is the biggest Halo ever gets.>I grant the possibility it's more of a Legendary thingIt's not. My most recent playthrough this past summer was on Legendary. And that one was with Famine on, I still never felt the need to go out of my way to find ammo to use.>One of the best vehicle encounters of the game right there. Not a high bar. Halo is just against infantry, TSC is also just against infantry and doesn't go on for very long, AOTCR is held back by how shit the tank is, and you never see another vehicle before or after TB.>No wonder you think there aren't any, you missed them.Show me where they are, then. You want to claim they exist and are plentiful. But even if they did, it'd just be something useless like 3 mags of AR ammo.I'll give you the one on Two Betrayals when you exit the control room. There's a sniper up on the tower that is genuinely useful, but the majority of anything you find in Halo is too short-lived to bother with. Especially when plasma+headshot is the go-to strategy to kill literally every enemy in the game.
>>12891336Snoy here. Halo mogs Half life2 no doubt
>>12893284>Show me even a couple of these supposed secretsHere's a couple of goodies for Two Betrayals.>lolWhat, were you not paying attention again?>Until TB is over and they forget about it entirelyKeyes is complete bedlam.>I still never felt the need to go out of my way to find ammo to use.You were using the noob combo and had surplus ammo? Even with the flood? Wut.>Not a high barIt absolutely is, especially when you consider the possibility you may be without a ride and the game still holds up well.>AOTCR is held back by how shit the tank isThe scorpion is pure fun. You must hate fun.>Show me where they are, then. You want to claim they exist and are plentiful.Done.>But even if they did, it'd just be something useless like 3 mags of AR ammo.Still a secret, even if you don't like what it has.>Especially when plasma+headshot is the go-to strategy to kill literally every enemy in the game.I can't imagine falling for the noob combo so hard. Oh what a chore it makes the late game.
>>12893305>Here's a couple of goodies for Two Betrayals. Those are all on the critical path, they're not secrets. And that's what you call "plentiful"? 3 health packs and some ammo caches? Not even a powerup. Have you just not played an FPS before Halo or something? That's the only way I can think you'd come to the conclusion that Halo has a lot of secret areas.>What, were you not paying attention again? The Flood are pretty shitty at living up to their lore.>Keyes is complete bedlam. Not really. There's a small section right before re-boarding the ship, but then you don't see Covenant again until the last quarter. And at that point there isn't a lot of Flood remaining.>You were using the noob combo and had surplus ammo? Even with the flood? Wut.The pistol is really good at dealing with Flood if you know how to aim.>It absolutely isIt's not.>especially when you consider the possibility you may be without a rideBasically impossible, they designed human vehicles to be indestructible for a reason. You have to be giga retarded to lose your Warthog in any of the vehicle sections.>The scorpion is pure fun. Not with the main cannon's accuracy, it's not.>Still a secretA shitty one, and you're not even likely to find that. Most nooks are completely empty.>I can't imagine falling for the noob combo so hard. There is nothing that deals with the Covenant better.

>>12893170>>12893185>Halo's singleplayer is too empty. They make these gigantic spaces, and forget to put anything in them. You never see more than like a dozen enemies on screen at a time(even then, those fights are a rarity and always involve Flood) and there are barely any secrets to reward exploration. The actual combat is fun, but everything else leaves much to be desired.Halo 2 fixes that
Regardless of how many secrets were actually there to find, I also had a lot of fun exploring in Halo. It was especially fun back when people were trying to collectively find the Megg easter egg. I spent a long time wandering areas trying to see if anything was out of place.
>>12893692In some ways. The levels are a lot more tight, but due to health regen and the removal of powerups there's even less to find.
>>12893701They added skulls though in Halo 2, so there was more of a point in going way out of your way.
>>12893702All but one of them spawn exclusively on legendary. In a game that has an infamously unbalanced highest difficulty.
>>12893704Maybe, but it still gives you a reason to hunt for secrets whether Halo 2's Legendary mode was good or not.
