Recently got an email w some hints of what is coming next software wise. The first games hint is a thought to be impossible port that originally released in 1996.
Second games hint is one of the most ambitious well written atmospheric games of 1999
And the third: one of the most heroic adventure games of the 20 century.

So what are your thoughts on games that are going to be released next year for the 64?

My guess for 1 is either Tomb Raider or Resident Evil 1. For 2 I thought it might be Silent Hill, but there's a chance it's a port of Planescape Torment. Sounds nuts, but don't forget that StarCraft released on N64. My guess for the last one is HOMM, and given ModRetro's history with Ubisoft, this is definitely the most likely of the 3. Also, Argonaut announced yesterday that they're porting Croc to N64.

Interesting. Those are some solid guesses I feel like. I really had no idea what it could’ve been but again those all seem like solid guesses.

They're just guesses and I'm probably wrong on most of them, but I'm very much excited to see what ends up releasing. It's also possible that "games we initially thought wouldn't be possible" might refer to licensing deals rather than the ports being uniquely challenging. If RE2 can be ported to N64, for instance, there's no reason RE1 couldn't, unless Capcom stands in the way and withholds permission. I'm glad they're actually doing unique ports instead of just repackaging old Acclaim games though.

Why? Personally I think it'll be interesting to compare how it looks vs the PS1 and Saturn versions. There were very few multiplats that released on all 3 consoles that generation --the only ones I can think of off the top of my head are Duke Nuke 3D and Puyo Puyo Sun, maybe Doom if you're counting Doom 64.

Why would anyone count Doom 64? It's a different game.

RE1 would be killer but I can't imagine a capcom deal coming out of nowhere. Weirder shit has happened I guess.

RE1 would be amazing. I have an authentic copy of 2 for the 64 I’d love to have a “real” copy of 1 on 64
>>
>>12893312
It's a different game but it's derived from the same game so it provides something of a similar adaptation challenge. Both Doom and Duke were rendered in completely different ways across all 3 platforms.

Looking at the Wikipedia articles for game releases in 1996 and 1999, there are some other interesting possibilities. Crash Bandicoot first released in 1996 and it's never had a cartridge port unless you count the Switch version of the remake. It would be truly mind-bending stuff to see an official cartridge release of Crash Bandicoot on N64, and that would definitely be a more challenging port than Resident Evil or Tomb Raider. The first Persona also released in 1996 and Persona 2 released in 1999, so that might possibly fit the criteria for the second one. System Shock 2 also released in 1999 but I think you'd be pushing into Dreamcast territory attempting to port that. I still stand by HOMM as the most likely but least exciting candidate for the third clue.

Good guesses but what about licensing w Crash? Would that be something they could just do?

Any ports would need to go through licenseholders in the first place. In this case, they'd need to go through Microsoft. That's a considerable step up from the sort of publishers ModRetro has been working with, such as Ubisoft, but I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility. Microsoft probably makes more money from Xbox themed merchandise and brand deals than they do actual game development these days, so if all they have to do is license out the IP and collect a royalty they really don't have much to lose. It would honestly be most notable for opening the door to rereleases of Rare games on M64.

Don't forget that Microsoft allowed Rare to work with the Evercade, so really any shit is possible if the price is right.

The Evercade Banjo ports were seemingly very thoughtfully done with bonus content and restored features. I'd love to see "special edition" versions of Rare games with support for higher resolution and framerate when played on M64.
