The great debate
>>
TTYDs only major improvement is in the depth of the combat system. PM 64 absolutely kills TTYD in terms of pacing, level design and story. The charm of 64 is also unrivaled. TTYD is a slog to get through with so much shit that wastes your time like obnoxious restrictive level design packed with backtracking or repeating the same shit over and over and over (glitz pit). The soundtrack for 64 is also top tier. The simplicity of the combat isn’t a total knock either, simplicity isn’t inherently bad.
I genuinely do not understand how the fake internet discourse praises TTYD as the greatest PM game and the original isn’t even mentioned. I can only assume it’s because TTYD was babbies first paper mario and they never played the original.
I also do not understand nintendos outright refuse to make another PM game in the classic style.

PM64 clears it. No contest. The originality, the humor, the characters. All top notch. Best Mario RPG ever. TTYD is a reddit game for discourse trannies

>I genuinely do not understand how the fake internet discourse praises TTYD as the greatest PM game
The small and extremely vocal gamecube fanbase drowning out everyone else.
>>
>>12895149
Finally someone who gets it
>>
>>12895135
TTYD is when Nintendo took the cute paper cutout aesthetic and decided to use it for gameplay purposes which would end up poisoning the series as Nintendo believed people liked these games for the fact Mario was made of paper and because they are RPGs
So fuck it
>>
>>12895295
*not because
>>
>>12895295
At the time it was nice and fun, but they should have went back to PM64 style overworld after the fact. Both games do some stuff better than the other, but I find myself replaying 64 more. TTYD is such a slog at times (I give a pass to Glitz Pit though, that chapter is really fun).

the combat being better when like 80% of these games is combat is a pretty big deal. The characters are also better too and there's more stuff to do. 64 has better map design and is a tighter package. It's largely a preference thing

Not in the US version.

Actually it now is because of the remaster

>>12895518
Remaster isn't canon. It's 30 fps.

I played PM64 many times when I was a kid. Always liked it. Definitely an easy game, but it felt very polished and comfy.
Never had a GC so I only played TTYD years later, after hearing online that it was way better etc etc.
I found the whole game to be very unpolished and without charm. The visuals are all over the place and the story devolves in to mario fanfiction.
Definitely just some autistic tranny core.
>>
>>12895149
>the absolute nothing "bowser is at it again" story of 64 is better than the actual original story of TTYD
how can anyone be this retarded?

Overall I like 64 more. The pacing is just so much better and a lot of the stuff in TTYD is just a complete retread of things you already did in 64. The pacing in TTYD is atrocious and the game feels like a real slog because of it plus battles take longer.

However TTYD does have so much more personality and the stuff that's unique to it is much better. It's really odd to me how played straight 64 is in its dialogue, the story is pretty boring and there aren't really any funny jokes or memorable moments or anything.
>>
>>12895149
fpbp although the story part is arguable. TTYD is kinda strange but at least original. Though the bowser-kidnapping-peach story isn't inherently bad considering it hadn't really been done as an RPG before.

In any case TTYD feels like it's not even a finished game. After Glitz Pit the levels all just feel like one corridor you go back and forth on over and over again. What a fucking ripoff holy shit.
>>
The original is a way better package, the fact that TTYD was rushed out in under a year really hurt it. It's a shame its development was so fucked by the Gamecube's circumstances, it could have been amazing. The setting and characters are definitely better in TTYD. I think the original's combat is perfectly fine too, TTYD added slightly more but shit like Stylish moves are so unnecessary.
>>
When I saw Mario get beaten by Bowser at the start of Paper Mario, that was my unironic hero getting absolutely btfo obliterated at the start of the game, and it blew my mind.
The whole game I literally had a childish vendetta against that Koopa motherfucker. More than ever I wanted to save the princess.
>>
>>12895135
64 is tighter and it’s so much easier to just pick it up and replay it but I like a lot of TTYD a bit better since the story moments are funnier, but it’s harder to replay because it’s kind of a slog
>>
I want to say the first one.
Though Goombella will always have a place in my soul..
>>
>>12896781
>there aren't really any memorable moments
penguin murder mystery? dry dry ruins rising from the sands? tubba blubba eating a dude in front of you? kolerado being repeatedly menaced by every enemy and hazard on the island? crystal palace mirror bullshit?
I'll give that it didn't go particularly heavy on humor, but not being memorable seems like a memory issue on your end rather than the game.
>>
I'm the jerk who really doesn't enjoy either.
I like the presentation, I like the writing, I love the overall tone, the mix of Mario and RPG elements is really fun...
But the games are sooooooo fucking easy. They bore me out of my skull.
There's a point where a game is so easy that it just becomes going through the motions, and Paper Mario is it for me. No thought needed, no effort required. You don't even have to do the action commands; you can fail them all and still win stupidly easily.
They're supposed to be baby's first RPG, I get that. But it's a shame, because all the other Mario RPGs are at least challenging enough that I don't find them boring.

I don't know, maybe it's just a me thing.
But when I see some Youtuber or whoever praise TTYD as the best RPG ever, I always roll my eyes and think, "Wow, they must really suck at RPGs," and I'm pretty much always correct.
>>
>>12895135
Sticker star is better than both of those games combined
>>
>>12895135
Never even knew these games existed back then.

>sold 280,000 copies

And now I know why. They were selling PC-tier numbers from the late 80's on a fucking Nintendo console, lmao.
>>
>>12897387
very interesting
>>
>>12895135
They both suck compared to Super Mario RPG.
>>
>>12898758
I don’t know where you’re getting that number from, both these games sold over a million copies originally.
>>
>>12899118
No, those were shipped copies, not unit sales.
>>
>>12895135
I like TTYD more because the villain isn’t Bowser

I played 64 with my six-year-old niece a couple of months ago. I read the text aloud to her using different voices and let her handle the gameplay. I already loved the game and beat it when I was around 12, but watching a younger kid play it gave me a new appreciation for how well made it is.

It's so simple, yet there's so much depth to it with the badge system, the items and the companions without being overly complicated. The progression is very straightforward, with just a little backtracking. This helps you know where to go while still giving you the freedom to do other things and discover changes around the main town (can't remember its name) and Mario's house.

The story is also full of innocence and even though it's simple, it feels good every time you rescue a Star and get rewarded with a new Star Power. Hell yeah. Cool as fuck.

My niece was crying at the end and, to be honest my dearest anons, I was too. Such a simple but beautiful game. 10/10.

TTYD is good too, but I wouldn't play it with my niece. It's way more mature and, as >>12895149 said, has too much backtracking. The pacing is slower, and it's definitely more complicated than I think it should be. Still a great game, though. I had a great time playing it. My take is that if you loved 64, you'll absolutely enjoy the more difficult and mature TTYD. But yes, 64 is better.
>>
>>12899441
based, played 64 around the same age as your niece. game taught me how to read
>>
>>12895149
>depth of combat system
what depth? the game was dogshit easy, it was the backtracking and repeating same shit is what filtered everyone
>>
>>12898981

Not really dude. Smrpg is kind of underwhelming as a Square title and it's just kind of boring. PM64 did a much better job at making one's progress feel significant and it has better characters, world, enemies and a better ost.
>>
>>12898219

Yea that guy has holes in his brain. Pm64 is loaded with funny and or memorable moments.
>>
>>12895135
There are mods. You can play the first game with the mechanical depth of the second game now. Including built in difficulty settings.

I've tried some just a little, and I wasn't really won over.
Last time I checked, you couldn't get them for any language but English, and I strongly prefer to play JRPGs in Japanese.
My other issue is that it's still fundamentally the same game I've already played, and I'm more interested in playing new games than replaying the same ones over and over.
And I also don't really like playing modded RPGs because I've had bad experiences where the mod wasn't playtested properly and and I get softlocked 30 hours in.

I'm not against the idea of giving them a second chance someday, especially if I can play them in Japanese.

>>12901770
You are correct. I have yet to play TTYD long enough without getting bored and stopping to play through all of The Pit.
I don't think it's a sufficient band-aid to fix the game's overall lack of difficulty. The later you put it off, the easier it is, but the earlier you do it, the more overleveled you get, and the easier the rest of the game is.
I'm happy it exists though.
>>
>>12895135
The combat/partner improvements in the first game would be godlike
>>
I just played both back to back and TTYD clears. The desert section alone in PM64 is such a slog.
>>
>>12898738
Not retro, but on a whim I decided to try them all. The game on the Wii story hit the hardest for me.
>>
>>12895171
>TTYD is a reddit game for discourse trannies
Do you have examples for amusement's sake of said (seething) trannies?
>>
>>12901775
I've beaten both games in their original format on original hardware several times each.
