This is the best JRPG ever made. Beautiful graphics. Great story. Fun characters. Good battle system. Absurd amount of endgame content. All others bow before Star Ocean.
I would agree except that it's not really a JRPG.
>>12896106everyone who ever hypes up a jrpg not from squaresoft i think are being edgy contrarian. literally all those titles terranigma breath of fire suikoden phantasy star etc etc are all trash compared to squaresoftonly exception i ever experienced is lufia 2
>>12896145Terranigma also is not a JRPG.
>>12896106Tri ace next game ,Valkyrie Profile is even better
>>12896106Literally my favorite JRPG ever made and my favorite PSX game, you got excellent taste
>>12896106>no fishing
>>12896247Lack of fishing is the only thing holding it back from perfection.
>>12896106I love this game, but>Absurd amount of endgame contentThis is not true. It has 1 really big epic dungeon that leads to a super boss, but it does not have an "absurd" amount of endgame. It's a long endgame, but it's still 1 thing. Fucking great tho, like, really GOOD endgame content. But yea.
>>12896420Nta but i think it's more than just the extra dungeon because you also do crafting, getting materials, learning new moves and skills, Colosseum, maybe having waited from pickpocketing, relationships, Private Events and so on. So not FF7 amount of end game content but there's still side stuff to do
I was bored throughout the entirety of the SNES game so I never considered the other games
>>12896145KWABFactually incorrect >>128965722 and 3 are good, 4 is generic slop, 5 is garbage, 6 is as good as 3 if not better.>>12896162Lack of an intuitive game mechanic holds it back in a very big way. One needs a guide to get far. Great visuals and sound, albeit.
>>12896106The PSX original is so charming, the PSP reboot BUTCHERED the classic anime art style for generic nu-anime style and made Rena look 12 years old. Still an amazing game with a shitload of content. I love that the combat system departs from the Dragon Quest trope of three characters in a line taking turns trading attacks with the enemy.>>12896247>>12896280The newest remake has fishing
>>12896671>nudeimake
Plot hole in this game: does no one on Expel give a shit that Opera and Ernest are three eyed aliens? I mean, they’re a planet of backwards yokels in a preindustrial society who thought Claude’s phaser gun was the Sword of Light, but Opera openly had three eyes and openly uses an energy rifle and no one on Expel ever comments on it (outside of a couple of comments in private actions from party members). You even find her crashed space ship at one point and it’s literally never brought up again, while Claude being an alien is still treated as a huge reveal. Kinda weird that no one on Nede says anything about Opera and Ernest having three eyes as well, since they’ve been in self imposed exile from the rest of the galaxy for millions of years.I love this game, I’m just thinking about this because I finally got Opera for the first time on my latest play through.
>>12896106Star Ocean = SegaTales = Nintendo
I remember an advertisement that said every action in the game had a consequence. Is that the case?
>play as Claude>steal on Calnus>get 500def armor mid-game>>12897287There's an affection system that determines who ends up with whom in the ending
Besides Valkyrie Profile, what are some more games like this one?
>>12897227No one notices her eye. They're busy staring at her legs.
>>12896106it isn't but it is good.
>>12896106I remember grinding 50k currency to buy a thief glove to steal from someone in the early game that gives you an item that you open for 3 random mid-late game items.I didn’t have many friends when I was young.
>>12897287What games do you play where """every action""" doesn't have """a consequence"""?
>>12896106Yeah? Maybe I should have played this instead of the first one. Got burned out on jrpgs for the next couple months. Should I play this or that second story r shit?
>>12898119>Got burned out on jrpgs for the next couple months. Sonce you have played 2 or 3 jrpg's there's no need to play more. they are made to be babby's first clear, a tool to get you situated with holding a controller and nothing more.
>>12898119Original is all sovl. Remake lacks sovl. Pretty safe playing the original. It's funny you say that because the first one burned me out on rpgs for a few months when I played it too.
>>12898119the remake adds some gayass tsundere character that wasn't in the original it's bullshit
>>12896106Wrong. The first disc is great and the game should have stopped right after the tower, everyone being teleported on the Calnus (?) and bam, end of the story. The second disc a chore: the new world sucks, the story gets boring and retarded, the new character is useless.
>>12896145Squareslop games are dogshit autobattlers with zero difficulty and has no story or characters whatsoever
>>12898228There’s two new characters on Nede you scrub, and the late game is where the combat and crafting really open up
>>12898228OH THE ALMIGHTY TRIA
>>12897247Plot twist. They are the same company.
>>12898873>two new characters on NedeI have zero memories. Just that the shitty journalist joins but I never played with her.>crafting Gay and boring, despite being a staple of the series. I remember looking up a guide just to craft the best sword or something.
>>12896434A lot of this isn't endgame, you can do crafting at the start of the game. The Colosseum is I suppose endgame-ish, but it's scaled to level 100, unlike the bonus dungeon which is scaled to 255. The fact you can level to 255 is also insane. The entire game itself you can beat it at level 80, 50-60 if you're on top of it, or grind to 100 if you're struggling. Then it has 155 more levels. Like HOLY SHIT. Like I said, it's not a lot of variety in the endgame, but it is a LONG endgame. That bonus dungeon is fat. If you wanna beat this game and see an ending, you can run it in like 20-30 hours. You want to get that silver trumpet and beat that bitch, you could be looking at 120 hours. It's a meaty game.
>>12896145>everyone who ever hypes up a jrpg not from squaresoft i think are being edgy contrarian.Squaresofters are the true tendies of the jarpig world.>only exception i ever experienced is lufia 2Great game nonetheless.
>>12897287No. People debunked this years later. The relationship system is actually really shallow. Only Private Actions, books and a few key fights change relationships. If you use Claude and Rena in all the key fights, they'll end up together in the end. Things like, using items on characters or doing 100+ battles together or other things, doesn't actually matter. Though once characters are friends when one dies you can hear them call out the name and get "angry" which is a buff. There is cool stuff so the system. I ended up incorporating it into my D&D games. Watching your friend fall in battle is a free crit.
>>12899145It was knowledge for years that you had to do a private action to pickpocket without relationship loss with the other characters, but someone said that private action makes no difference? Does anyone know if that’s true?
>>12899151Pickpocketing can lower all of the parties relationship value with the thief character. It will NEVER lower any other connection though. So Precis and Leon will stay friends. But if Ashton is pickpocketing, they may like Ashton less. If your main is Claude and you do a PA and go around stealing as Claude it should not affect it. You can go into some really in depth ways to manipulate character values this way, but that's a huge rabbit hole. Its a way to lower Ernest and Opera's high pair potential. One of the best and easiest methods to use this is to grind out Claude/Rena before celine, get pickpocketing, do all your pickpocketing with just those 2. Which gets you the treasure chest from mars and Philia's item generator. Then never steal ever again. Claude and Rena are VERY easy to get together through PAs, so all the damage you do can be undone.
