What do you consider the start of "video games"?

As in, what do you personally think is the earliest example you can still go back to and enjoy today because fundamentally it's the same blueprint or textbook definition of what a true video game is. For example, I think it's a struggle to even call Atari 2600 games "video games", because they're just so basic and well...shit. None of them stood the test of time.

If you want to be practical, then yes, the Atari 2600 is the earliest you can play to where it was just the box, controller, and cartridge. Nothing weird like what Magnavox had. I had fun with Yar's Revenge, Berserk, Pac-Man, and Pitfall.
If you want to be practical? Then the NES and the Master System. 8-Bit games that aren't bullshit.

If you want to be technical*. Damnit.

Gen 3 was when games stopped being one single screen 20 minutes long scoreslop you only play once with a friend and never again and become the actual videogames we know today, so gen 3
>>
>>12908019
Defender 2600 is better than every PC game.
>>
>>12908019
Early 80s arcade games even if single screen are still playable.
Specially games from 1982/83.

Looks like shit, no wonder no one give a fuck about top down action adventures until Zelda

Don't be autistic, they're just picking the most famous example. Nobody outside Japan knows what a Wonderswan is.

It's because OP's image is genAI horeshit.
I'm 'murrican and had picrel in the early '90s, came out '90 / '91 and was Sega's 2nd highest selling console ever ffs.

Curious you're not bitching about how polygons didn't start with the Playstation either, NDS I guess

the earliest examples of good games were in arcades. theres a reason home consoles before the nes are barely discussed. there were plenty of good arcade games in the 70s before the 80s explosion even began

Which earlier console had DVDs and online?
>>
That would be the early text adventures. Zork is just as playable today as it was when it came out in 1977. Forcing you to use your imagination is preferable to shitty graphics.

Tennis for Two

There's no such fucking thing as a "true video game", they're all video games. Just some of them you're too brain-rotted to appreciate

the fuck does dvd have to do with online?

DVDs and online are two defining points applicable to the PS2, not an and/or statement you could attach to preceding consoles.

Personally, I view Space Invaders as the beginning. Everything before Space Invaders was just an early experiment. The actual video game industry itself was born out of Space Invaders.

PS2 didn't even come with online ability. I was there as a teenager, the ethernet adapter came out as an add-on a year later. I played THPS3 with it.

>>12908731
PS2 supported USB networking options out of the box.

Embarrassing how many people are taking this bait seriously.
>>
realistically speaking, the pong consoles. Magnavox odyssey was just manipulating a block of light with screen overlays
>>
>>12908789
Football is just manipulating a ball on a field overlay, I guess it's not a real sport?

The actual reason is the userbase being in their own spaces for decades now and literally dying out. Barely anyone younger than 30 who are into retro discusses gen 3 and any discussion is largely performative for whatever brand they worship or extremely surface level.

Gen 3 is to the current majority what gen 2 used to be for the elderly on here and a lot of them have a hard time accepting that so they make cope threads. in a few decades videogames will have started with GTA 5.

A lot of zoomers start it at Gen IV, they will skip to Gen VI when they get a chance I'm sure

Different dates for different purposes. 1977 in terms of 'video games' as a major global cultural phenomenon/a recognized category of media. Atari 2600, Commodore PET; Apple II; TRS-80; Nintendo's first console; Space Wars; Breakout; Zork; etc. And the little gadget in pic related; one of the most successful handheld consoles ever. That was the year the genre shifted from toys and a possible disco-style fad to a permanent feature of media.

Actual video games were decades old at that point. But that's kind of like noting that telegraphy experiments began in the 1830's when 'telegraph' as a cultural meme didn't really exist until the global cable buildout of the 1850's/1860's. Prior to that, it was mostly a toy.

Complex analog/electro-mechanical arcade games go back to the 1930's, and simpler mechanical arcade games started showing up in the 1880's. Live 'video' games (some of which were analog) started with oscilloscope experiments in the late-1940's. Digital games (some of which had no video component) started around the same time, but were clumsy and sometimes required physically switching tubes or inputs.

The other major candidate year aside from 1977 would be 1972, due to Pong and the Magnavox Odyssey. But those were more like a slow crawl out of 1960's-era developments than a global explosion.
