What do you think about Sega's ports on PC during the retro era? I admit I don't have a lot of experience with them. I recently tried the Sonic and Knuckles collection, which has an interesting MIDI soundtrack, but I found it ran a bit sluggish at points, though maybe I configured it wrong. I heard some of their other ports could be hit or miss as well.
>>12909064>interesting MIDI soundtrackMIDI soundtracks only sound as interesting as the hardware can support.> I heard some of their other ports could be hit or miss as well.were fine
>>12909064I thought Sonic CD was a PC exclusive until I got the internet and found out about the Sega CD
>>12909064>Sonic & GarfieldIs this canon? What would these characters even talk about, chili dogs?
>>12909064Good for the time if you couldn't have a console. I liked Sonic CD since you didn't really get many of those types of games on pc. Comix Zone is interesting, it looses some of the genesis raster effects but gains at least touched up sprites and probably other things. Sega Rally and Daytona pretty by the numbers port, good enough to play but has the same Sega Satrun quad texture warping. 16 bit having issues like screen tearing and dodgy scrolling was just accepted as pretty normal as long as it played half decent. These games and any 16 bit game came out a few years before emulators so they were really appreciated back then.
>>12909115>So, you say you're the fastest being alive, eh? How fast could you get to Abu Dhabi? I might have a job for you...
>>12909064It was basically my introduction to sega since my cousins had a genesis and i only had a game gear. Great output for the era. It's too bad SoA/PC division was being faggy and wouldn't let them the Sonic Xtreme guys release it as a PC exclusive after it started going tits up. I can picture it in a bundle set along with the pc versions of CD, S&K and 3D Blast.
>>12909115>Is this canon?yes
>>12909248Based af.
>>12909119>Comix Zone is interesting, it looses some of the genesis raster effects but gains at least touched up sprites and probably other things. Is that only in the standalone version or also in the Genesis compilation packs? Apparently Revenge of Shinobi is supposed to be a beta version in the one pack.
I wonder if the 86Box devs will ever get around to emulating the Nvidia NV1 for those weird ports from the Saturn that made use of it.
I remember playing Sonic 3D back then. Felt really trippy! I remember that.
>>12909185It looked kinda ass anyway.
House of the Dead and Virtua Cop are the Saturn versions, but better.
>>12909064A pain in the bitch to set up, even back then. No matter what I did, I couldn't play Sonic CD with the CD soundtrack (just SFX and FMV audio) Sonic & Knuckles Collection always ran too fast, and I could NEVER get past the first menu in Sonic R!Still makes me mad they also had the option to streamline and salvage Sonic X-treme into a killer-app PC-exclusive, but they turned it down in favor of these suboptimal conversions. Like we needed Saturn 3D Blast without the thing that made it worth playing and a glitchy save system...
>>12909064Being a nintendo and playstation kid, I was my only exposure to Golden Axe. Great game, but I never even knew it was originally an arcade and genesis game until I became an adult. I always thought it was just a PC game
>>12913305Did they release a light gun with them?
>>12913331Your CD-ROM drive probably didn't have the additional audio cable connected to your soundcard. In those days it wasn't as simple as plugging in the IDE cable.
It will never not be weird to me that like half the Saturn “exclusive” library plus some random fucking Genesis games (not even just Sonic, stuff like Comix Zone and Echo too) were natively playable on PC in the mid-00s. A lot of the Saturn ports in particular look and run better too.
>>12913331>they also had the option to streamline and salvage Sonic X-treme into a killer-app PC-exclusivedon’t be mad, theres 0 chance the game would have magically been some smash hit on PC. theres 0 chance it’d even have been good, cf. the entirety of the western developed genesis and saturn library.
>>12909131>"Uh, why are there airholes in the box?">"Garfield, I-">(shakes the box) "Just drop it wherever and come back. And, uh, you don't have to be gentle on my account."
>>12916982It'd've been the version without the Senn OC, so it'd automatically have been the better version. Then it'd be ported to Gems Collection where it'd have gotten a second life. It wouldn't have been mindblowing, but at least it'd have capped off that era of Sobic better than Sonic R.
