What are some vidya you found to be just "ok" despite their lauded status, but can still appreciate their merits for what devs tried to archive?
RE4
>>12910915>Overrated gamesanything produced by Nintendo's in-house developers. Most of Rare's catalogue after the NES/GB. anything produced by hideo kojima
Shut up faggot
>>12910915Legend of Zelda. Just comes off as a neutered Ultima 3.
>>12910979>Most of Rare's catalogue after the NES/GB.This. They're great with presentation, but they can't maintain a stable framerate on the N64 no matter how hard they try.
>>12910989>but they can't maintain a stable framerate on the N64 no matter how hard they try.i recall reading about this a long time ago. when nintnedo contracted rare to develop games for n64 they gave rare 0% help with microcode for the GPU. the documentation to develop microcode was poorly translated from japanese to english. rare had to use this documentation and reverse engineer nintendo's own microcode to program anything for the console or be stuck using the limited microcode files that shipped with nintendo's early SDKs. apparently toward the end of n64's life nintendo approached rare with proper documentation for it and basically gave them the keys to the city. It turns out that nintendo were trying to make 3rd party developers look worse than nintendo's own. for all the games rare made for nintendo, they didn't give much of a fuck about rare. nintendo wanted the world to know that only they can make the best games for their system and they did this (sony and sega did this as well to some degree) by withholding documentation and code. classy stuff. and that's one of the reasons why rare sucked during n64s day
>>12911069Jeez, that's horrible! Then again, I guess it's no different from how Rare made NES devkits.
>>12911069I am skeptical of details but I don't doubt your premise.>that's one of the reasons why rare sucked during n64s dayDid they? Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Diddy Kong Racing, Banjo... Those were big parts of the N64 experience.Did they drop frames often? Yes. Did it mean that their games "sucked?" Obviously not, Goldeneye was the hottest shit around for several years.
>>12910975there are only two perfect games first playthrough they are re4 and dark souls>games with online aspect are trash outside of battlefield 3
>>12910915
>>12911076>I guess it's no different from how Rare made NES devkits.yeah. same shit, different decade. nintendo expected developers to make their own tools, buy all the assemblers, eeprom burners, in-circuit emulators etc. Back at Nintendo HQ they had this enormous HP computer that was basically a hardware emulator with terminals and storage attached to it. It was literally a struggle for anyone else. Amazingly games still got produced despite getting no assistance from Nintendo>>12911079>Did they? Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Diddy Kong Racing, Banjo... Those were big parts of the N64 experience.doesn't mean they were well programmed. they were fucking shockingly programmed. the graphics were awful. goldeneye's frame rate on 1 player mode is fucking trash. starts getting sluggish on 2 player mode. 4 player mode is like a slideshow. like i've said, not rare's fault that they were contracted to make games for fucking idiots that refused to share technology with their own licensed developers. embarrassing for nintendo. always will be embarrassing for them.
>>12911083>dark souls>perfectPlease detransition before it's too late
>>12910975Most of the praise comes from the kino village level. The castle part was when I gave up, shit was lame.
>>12911121imagine giving a shit about trannies ever .. before it became hip to be a faggot and hip to be transfaggots i seent one faggot dressed up as a woman when i was like 5 and i asked my mom why that man is wearing womens clothes>trannies dont matter and mentioning shows you are bamboozled into giving a shit about faggots
>>12910915>Majora's Mask, was annoying as fuck with the time thingy and having to restart dungeons cuz you take to much time completing them, still the world was better than OoT.>Super Metroid, I played the GBA games first so when I went to SM, Samus felt like she was in the moon and the controllers where all fucked up, I like it but whenever I play the game I have to use a hack that makes the game play and control like the GBA games.>Sonic games, never liked the momentum you have to take before doing anything.>Final Fantasy games, I used to be a huge FF fag but in recent years I felt that the story gets on the way of the gameplay, like the characters talk to much compared to something like DQ where they go straight to the point.
>>12910979Thirding this on the Nintendo front. Mario and Zelda are sleep medicine to me.
Super Mario World is better than Mario 3 and I hate that Mario 3 (with bits of Yoshi's Island) became the blueprint for sidescrolling Mario
>>12911085This is probably the most properly-rated game in existence. You're a retard contrarian faggot.
>>12911124no it comes from just outright playing better than any comparable game at the time and the unique arcade sensibility capcom brought to a shooter. vast majority of 6th gen shooters were absolute trash in comparison.
>>12911457This. I never liked or cared about the RE franchise otherwise, but 4 is just a rock solid game, especially for the time.
>>12910915>What are some vidya you found to be just "ok" despite their lauded status, but can still appreciate their merits for what devs tried to archive?Any SNES game
>>12911457>vast majority of 6th gen shooters were absolute trash in comparison. You're so full of shit I have no words. 6th generation was the cream of the crop for console shooters.
>>12910915A Link to the Past is a fine game, but the people who praise it talk about it like it's the second coming of Christ. It's just a decent Zelda game, and I wouldn't even consider it a very ambitious one.>Close to no story>The soundtrack is small (you spend the whole game hearing the same tracks over and over and over)>The combat is worse than Zelda II's imo>The dungeons have little to no theming >The spritework is extremely "launch title">Being able to bottle fairies vastly lowers the game's difficulty>Switching items is slow and a constant annoyanceIt introduced a lot of neat ideas which later games in the series would use better, and I respect it for that. And there's nothing wrong with it, it's a perfectly playable game. But so many people discuss it like it's this perfect, untouchable classic, and I can only assume they're completely nostalgia-blinded.
Not an egregious example but I never understood why people say Warioland 3 is better than Warioland 2. The only thing Warioland 3 really has going for it is the spritework. To me, Warioland 3 was respectable due to its ambition but compared to Warioland 2 I found it such a slog to play through. I'd say that this also applies to Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land. Wario feels too slow and being completely neutered after you get hit once was a bad decision (in my eyes).(Not to say either of these games are THAT bad, but compared to the masterpiece that is Warioland 2 they pale in comparison)
>>12911083>roll around while swinging a sword and doing tick damageand they kept making those games over, and over, and over again also re4 was always over-hyped, gets lame after a few hours
>>12910915its a 7/10 that gets glazed by nostalgiafags. Its a super mid dungeon slasher at best, with a bad story and bland music. Very generic.
>>12911510That's pretty much how every Zelda game feels to me. It's some very limited exploration mixed with a combination of very easy combat and limited puzzles which are mostly just using items you collect in obvious ways. I haven't played one I think is flat out bad, but I don't get the hype at all.
>>12910915The Panzer Dragoon series. I've only played 1, Zwei and completed Orta, and maybe aside from Orta, they suck as rail shooters, but have a unique world design combined with the music adds to the tribal vibe. Gameplay wise they're the movie games of rail shooters made to be experienced rather than fun. Jet Set Radio/Future are another. Again, great designs and music, but the gameplay, especially the controls for 1, suck. I was really into Future's look and heard great thing about it, but having watched a Literal Who's retrospective on it, the game seems unfinished with too much padding.
>>12911129>Blah blah blah *even more schizo babble*You lost, troon.
>>12911510>But so many people discuss it like it's this perfect, untouchable classic, and I can only assume they're completely nostalgia-blinded.From understanding, the praise is always in comparison to OoT's shortcoming when going 3D. Idk if Egoraptor started it or people have felt that way before, but regardless, I agree. I think it makes great use of its overworld and giving a good sense of curiosity in wanting to explore it, as far as the light world goes. The dark world was just a headache to navigate and more restrictive with how gated it was, which is the point, I guess, as it's to get you to use your brain to figure out where to go and what to do next, but that didn't make that portion if the game any less tedious.
>>12910915Final Fantasy 7
>>12910975/threed
>>12911673>The Panzer Dragoon series. I've only played 1, Zwei and completed Orta, and maybe aside from Orta, they suck as rail shooters, but have a unique world design combined with the music adds to the tribal vibe. Gameplay wise they're the movie games of rail shooters made to be experienced rather than fun.I 1cc'd 1 and thought it was solid. Never really played other rail shooters. Which ones are good then?
>>12910915who cares, why do you people just want to bitch about things all day
The GTA games, all of them even the 2D ones.
>>12911710>Which ones are good then?Star Fox 64Sin and Punishment 1 and 2
>>12911271its a glorified tech demo.
>>12911921And properly-rated as such. Does anyone unironically praise it as more than that these days?
>>12910915What is a shitpost that insists upon itself?
>>12911950tech demos don't have incredibly fun movement mechanics that draw people to the game 30 years later.
>>12911950You're retarded. Mario 64 still holds up even today.
>>12911730this. I thought they were all mediocre and quickly dropped each one, except for IV, which was the only one I ever finished. mostly because of the music and the driving. it reminded me of Destruction Derby the way the cars handled.
>>12910915Ocarina of Time. Found it boring as a kid and still do today.
>>12912154>tech demos don't have incredibly fun movement mechanics that draw people to the game 30 years later. You're right, nostalgia does that.
>>12911589The best Zelda games use that simple formula as a foundation to build a memorable world and fun characters and a really strong tone (whether pleasant or dark). ALttP doesn't, but I can kinda forgive it for that because it predates all the games that do.>>12911704It's definitely not just an Egoraptor thing. I was actually thinking about snesrankings.com when I wrote my post. (Really cool site.)
>>12911921>Game uses new technology"It's a tech demo!">Game uses old technology"It's a rip-off!"And not a single neuron was fired.
>>12912237zoomers didn't play mario 64 as kids
>>12912481I did on Wii VC.
>>12912481Yea, but I'm a millennial. Banjo Kazooie was better.
>>12911069>>12911087Nah, fuck you. If anyone gave a fuck about frame rate on a CRT at the time they were a fat PC gaming cunt. OOT and Goldeneye played just fine on the OG hardware. I literally failed my sixth year in Bong high school because we were addicted to Goldeneye in the student centre and that’s 4 player. Hell, even Halo feels just fine on a CRT while playing it on an upscaler is choppy as fuck. Anyone who complains about low frame rate on a commercial CRT is immediately suspect as a larping faggot or trolling because they had a decent PC in the 90s.
>>12912481I'm gen x, played it in my 20's. Thought Tomb Raider was a much better game.
>>12911085Yeah this game kinda sucked. OOT and Shadows of the empire were good tho
>>12910915For me, it’s most CRPGS from the 90s. I appreciate the idea of Planescape Torment, but don’t find it very enjoyable to actually play.
In a different time I'd be able to entertain a thread like this. Nowadays this just comes off as zoomer general
>>12912614Apples and oranges
World of Warcraft was always a shit game and Half Life is overrated all GTA games are garbage
>>12912669Not a good comparison, both apples and oranges are good.
>>12912721Mario 64 and Tomb Raider aren’t very comparable to each other desu. They only get compared because they came out in the same year.
>>12912669WHY CANT I COMPARE FRUITS?
the quintet trilogy.aspects of the games are amazing, but i never cared for the gameplay much
soul reaver.
>>12912478correct. you used zero neurons writing your post.
>>12910915pretty much all of 5th gen 3d games. they dont hold up and its clear they are only propped up by nostalgia and bandwagoning parrots/cultists.
>>12912513>Anyone who complains about low frame rate on a commercial CRT is immediately suspect as a larping faggot or trolling because they had a decent PC in the 90s.Nah man, GoldenEye as fun as it was was very frustrating at times, particularly Train and Jungle on 00 Agent, the framerate would get so low you would start dropping inputs and it would get you killed. In MP it could get that bad but rarely actually did.Funny that I don't remember having these issues in Perfect Dark but I also didn't play that one nearly as much on OG hardware, mostly played the 360 version which was top stuff.
>>12910915Okamiall the RE gameskirby mainline games
Final Fantasy VII
>>12913935For me, it's the entire JRPG genre.
>>12910915>archive*achieve
>>12912492>Banjo Kazooie was better.th graphics, music, and overall presentation is really good, but it's not even close to mario 64 as a platformer.
Earthbound, it's just 'ok'
>>12914908And the controls....and the story....and the level design...and the puzzles....The only thing you could debatably argue is that you had more freedom in Mario 64, although that's wrong too, since you had to go into the painting for a specific star in order to unlock other ones, where as once you're in a puzzle painting in Banjo, you can collect everything in one go.
>>12913945I would agree but I can't appreciate their merits.
>>12914912/thread
>>12915550Banjo Kazooie also has some of the best pacing in a platformer for me. The levels, including the overworld, aren't blown way out of proportion either.I found The Impossible Lair to be very enjoyable. What did you think about it?In terms of over rated games; for me? Probably the Metal Gear games. They're excellent games in many ways with some fine Kino moments. But Hideo "I need to scan your feet for my inserted fetish" Kojima just can't tell a fucking story to save his life. For me, a game's story is very important.
Metal Gear Solid and Ocarina
>>12911129Lost a friend to this mind virus, and I'm tired to seeing them walking around lying to everyone about their very being. Then demanding you lie to protect their ego. It's easy to not give a shit when you don't live around them, or you aren't forced to work with them.Moved back to the sticks to get away from these (and other) sorts. Then today I was looking for retro games at the thrift store with my five yo, and a 6ft5inch tranny walked in looking embarrassed to exist and I was just fuckin annoyed that one managed to congeal in the gutters of my small town at all.My kid didn't notice though, so I don't have to explain this mental illness for another day. Lucky me.
>>12910915every RE thread on this board. oh you meant games. probably RE4.
>>12911575Objectively wrong
>>12912796Shite taste
>>12911589>It's some very limited exploration mixed with a combination of very easy combat and limited puzzles which are mostly just using items you collect in obvious ways. It's a decent challenge when you're a kid, the intended audience. Most of the praise this series gets is from people who grew up with it. I used to love AlttP too but trying it as an adult made me arrive at this same conclusion. What it does well is character design and vibes. Link looks cool, the world is cool, etc. Makes you want to like it and forgive any aspect of the gameplay.
>>12911535Based Wario Land 2 enjoyerI agree with literally everything you wrote
>>12910975This
>>12916481Kinda agree. Zelda games to me feel more like a tone poem than a game. You start and are immersed in this light fantasy world with various degrees of quirkiness that you just sort of drift through. There will be some fighting, but it's always easy and never holds you back and there will be some puzzles, but nothing you have to think about for long, just follow the pattern or whatever and move onto the next area. It doesn't really challenge you, but your inputs make it feel more visceral. LA kinda hits the nail on the head where at the end it feels like a dream you wandered through.
