If you were actually alive in the 90s, these were the coolest characters in retro gaming

it's true

No way all of these are real
I know Reptile, Scorpion, Smoke, Ermac and Sub-Zero but do you expect me to believe they made a teal nigga
>>
>>12910983
The teal guy is supposed to be Chameleon I think. Purple guy is Rain, grey guy is Smoke, black one is Noob. Only one I'm not sure about is the beige one. Tremor? But he didn't have a classic ninja skin, he was first in Special Forces.

i liked Rain but it turned out he was based on a gay guy
>>

Tremor wasn't playable till MK X
The ninja between Reptile and Subzero should've been rainbow to represent chameleon

It's Tremor.

OP image is Ermac, Tremor, Scorpion, Reptile, Chameleon, Sub-Zero, Rain, Smoke and Noob Saibot.
>>
Wasn't there also a darker gray one called Stinky, and a rainbow-colored one called Sparkles?

As I remember it, these MK3/U ninjas with the stripped shoulderpads weren't cool anymore. In fact that's the exact moment it started to feel bloated and bankrupt.
Sure, MK continued to be popular, but this was something I learned recently. To me, the real MK hype died exactly with MK4. I'm sure fans of the series continued to play the 6th gen games but the MK phenomenon of the 90s was over.
MK1 was the surprise breakthrough, became popular by word of mouth due to the mythical fatalities. Scorpion and Sub Zero had the coolest fatalities and they were the 2 ninjas of the game, of course they became the most popular.
MK2 was the peak of the MK hype, it delivered and it included Reptile, the hidden non-playable ninja from MK1, Smoke and Saibot.
At this point the balance was just right, you got 3 playable ninjas and 2 hidden bosses.
By 3, they realized they needed to do something else so they unmasked Zero and dared not to include Scoprion, instead switching to colored cyborgs.
3's hype was high but it didn't deliver. I still played the shit out of 3 when it came out but it was clear that it didn't live up to MK2.
Ultimate was an attempt to damage control by bringing back ninjas but it was those weird new costumes instead of the good old ones.
At this point MK started feeling less and less cool.

Lol

>>12911978
I mean it probably depends how old you were. 3 came out the same year as the movie which tends to be hugely popular among people who were younger at the time and less so with people who were like teen fans just into the edginess

4 was definitely a down point though along with Annihilation which came out around the same time, but 4 had a lot going against it .... trying to compete with Tekken, first entry of a 2D game going 3D, and a "new generation" cast of characters which was literally never received well back then
>>
>>12910960
Only for about 4 years of the decade. Mortal Kombat was no longer that cool by the latter half of the 90s.
>>
>>12911978
The character designs in 3/UMK3 were too superhero-y
>>
>>12913109
Yet it was the only fighting game that never died in the 00s
>>
>>12913187
That's because as much as historical revisionists claim, the fighting genre just wasn't popular in the 00s when FPS rise up as the competitive gaming staple but MK still had larger brand recognition and characters people liked to keep it afloat on the level of like, general franchise games like X-Men or Transformers or Batman
>>
>>12910960
looks like they're doing the MJ lean
>>
>>12910960
I find it funny that Noob Saibot was originally a Kano pallet swap
>>
>>12911104
Only third worlders played SNK games.
>>
>Have SNES with street fighter II
>Go to another family's house because dinner party, maybe 1995
>They have a genesis and mortal kombat
>It's clunky as fuck and the bros in the family got super hyped over fatalities and they look at me like I'm supposed to be impressed and act out
Look, I'm all for gore and sex, but it the game doesn't feel right to play then it's shit.
>>
>>12910960

Ah, how i miss it when ermac was still human instead of being a zombie, rain was still white instead of being arabian and reptile was still a human who used to use acid saliva instead of being a human-reptile.
>>
>>12914201
Only on MK3.
>>
>>12914464
Nobody thought that deeply about games as a little kid though, I played Bubsy every day and I also owed vastly superior games, I just was intent on playing everything I had available because entertainment was limited

Plus most people who talk about SF like they were always competitive are larpers. I was actually good at fighting games at an early age but I was a minority, most kids couldn't figure out how to consistently dragon punch or even block in SF, MK got played a lot more just because of that in my experience because kids would just scream about "cheating" and give up after two rounds of not being able to block or perform a hadoken

>>12914560
The reality though is they were always those things in the game bios. They just couldn't graphically do it because they used real actors and pallet swaps. Rain was always Edenian which is just like a vaguely eastern mashup race, reptile was always a lizard man wearing a disguise, and ermac was always a bunch of enslaved souls crammed into a body

The only one who's story came after the 2D era was noob, because they didn't reveal he was the first Sub Zero until the 3D era, before that he was just vaguely some netherealm minion guy
>>
>>12914464
>>12914801
Street Fighter II isn't any less clunky than MK 1 and 2, especially in console. The hyper editions made it fast but it wasn't smooth, it just was clunky early fighting on fast forward
>>
>>12914801

Plus race is just something you have to hand wave in early MK because all the ninjas were played by a Mexican guy or something and unmasked Sub Zero is very clearly a white guy despite his officially being Chinese. Kano was also originally called half Japanese despite his actor very clearly not being so

I'm that anon, SF2 Turbo was the only real fighting game I ever owned. I've never, ever, been good at fighting games. MK just felt unpolished or maybe laggy in comparison. You could chalk it up to me preferring what I had but I was pretty open to discovering new stuff and often preferred games on consoles I didn't have.
I felt like MK relied too much on the shock value where SF2T had better controls, backgrounds, and general atmosphere.
>>
>>12914464
brother sf2 felt just as clunky no matter whether we played sf or mk we just mashed buttons hoping to produce special moves. at least among my friends
>>
>>12911978
MK took a dip in popularity around the time that 4 came out but it made a comeback when deadly alliance/deception came out
>>
>>12914560
Yeah the ninjas were unironically cooler when they were simple palette swaps
>>
>>12914934

At lest they not were zombies or mutants.

Nintendo adult moment
>>
>>12914838
Yeah no there's a big difference between them especially down to controls and atmosphere. SFII wasn't super ironed out yet, and MKII made big improvements over the first, but how the controls feel is very different. At the time MKs realistic movie inspired look and moody tone was a plus but SFII was more traditional sprite based appeal

Then obviously in retrospect the SFII way became the primary foundation for the genre as it became more competitive and there's definitely more of a natural fluid feel to how the inputs work with the attacks, however it requires a lot more getting used to. Back to block, quarter circle motions and zigzags on the d pad especially, was and continues to be filtering to casual gamers even in the new ones that baby up the leniency for fucking up. Meanwhile MK inputs can feel random and block button can feel less smooth, but at the same time it's a lot more noob friendly, anyone can quickly memorize tapping "up down A" within a round or two, so I loved pretty much any fighting games I got my hands on including total shit like the Genesis TMNT fighter and the glorious ass backwards jank of Primal Rage, but MK is what I have the most actual couch co op nostalgia with because there wasn't a big learning curve and it didn't make other kids wanna cry or turn it off

Then like in the later days, Tekken became pretty popular in my experience and every noob spamming Eddie because he was easy to be annoying with was the most annoying shit

>Mortal Kombat hype died when the arcade scene died out
You could have saved a lot of typing by just saying that inside.
>>
>>12917481
It didn't really though considering they stopped making arcade games period in sixth Gen, but still warranted a release every couple years.

People think 3D era MK flopped because online, a lot of old diehards didn't like it. But those games sold well and even got decent reviews. It's a very interesting fact to me that MK vs DC, the most hated game in the fanbase, sold well enough to impress the higher ups at Warner Bros which is why they bought it leading into the Netherealm era with MK9
>>
>>12913191
MK is just inherently interesting. Any time a new one comes out, I probably won’t play it but I’m definitely getting on YouTube and watching a fatality reel and a story mode playthrough. I’m not the type of person who normally would watch that kind of thing, but MK lore is always compelling which is all the more admirable considering how stupid it is, and seeing just how far they’re willing to go for an especially brutal fatality is a guilty pleasure I’ll never let go of.
>>
>>12917497
I used to be like this until the last game's story mode. Blech. I'm pretty sure the last frame in the Mortal Kombat 1 is some black qween taking her place on the throne or some gay woke shit. Fuck these people.
>>
>>12917497
The MK lore is interesting as fuck (but only pre armageddon)
