Why the fuck do Americans get rid of the game cases and just store the game carts ?Are you insane ?
>>12911325Post the CIB games you bought at that time or stfu poorbaby
>>12911325I was buying cheap used copies back when many of these titles were still new on the shelf. Made gaming very affordable if you couldn't pay full price or wait for sales but also didn't like renting.
>>12911325That's not unusual for Nintendo games since those just came in cheap cardboard boxes, but I can't imagine why anyone would to toss those clamshell cases Sega games typically came in since they were useful for actually storing the games.
>>12911325Most gamers in Japan did the same thing.
>>12911325GameStop threw most of them away. When people traded in their complete games, GameStop threw the cases and manuals in the garbage.I remember when I traded in my copy of Golden Sun back when it was relatively new, I watched the person behind the counter throw the box right in the garbage in front of me.
>>12911325>Why the fuck do Americans get rid of the game cases and just store the game carts ?>Are you insane ?Anon, back when these games were in circulation, they were not collectors items for the autistic to obsess over, they were toys primarily for children to play with. Kids were about as interested in keeping the box as they were for their GI Joe's. Most of the game cartridges and manuals went into a drawer or just a pile near the console, not neatly aligned on bookshelf. Sega Genesis plastic cases may have lasted longer but they often get broken or simply ditched because they take up to much room.
>>12911336OP BTFO again by the first post
>>12911325>why did parents throw out the cardboard boxes for their kid's toys when they were worthless instead of holding onto them for 3 decades?>why didn't 5 year olds take care of or keep the cardboard boxes their toys came in?
Because there was no real reason to have the box, they weren't viewed as collectors' items back then, just useless cardboard to be thrown out. Everyone just thought of vidya as inferior toys until recently.
>>12911507That is deranged. What a retarded establishment.
>>12911719>just useless cardboard to be thrown out. Everyone just thought of vidya as inferior toys until recently.i thought of them as superior toy.
>>12911760You were a dumb kid then, most adults of the time saw them as a dumb fad that was disposable.
>>12911347This. I was able to keep all my Genesis clamshells from when I was a kid. None of my GB boxes made it unfortunately.
>>12911507>GameStop threw most of them away. What a fucking crime!
>>12911656Yeah I can't get my head around this idea of keeping cheap trashy cardboard packaging around for DECADES, unless you are an actual serious historian or museum worker. Plastic boxes with molded mounting points for cartridges? Yeah I guess maybe, although the cartridges are already their own tough plastic packages so even those aren't really necessary. Plastic boxes for optical discs? Yes of course since optical discs are relatively fragile. But cardboard is useless for everybody except certain kinds of historian and cynical investors who wish to exploit insane collectors. If you're sane, you put the cartridges in a nice compact row on a shelf or in a sturdy container, like in OP's image, and you put the manuals in a stack in a drawer; and the stupid cheap flimsy boxes go in the trash where they belong.
>>12911719You sound like you have a persecution complex. Why do you care what other people think about your hobby? Do you expect people to clap and cheer because you spent all day trying to make it through Castlevania or something?
>>12911325Super NES games came in cardboard boxes and Genesis games switched to cardboard in 1994 or something like that.
>>12911325Considering sega and Nintendo both put their branding on racks designed to hold loose carts, they must have assumed many would ditch the packaging.
>>12911860Nigga, we put the NES in storage for like half a decade because my boomer ass parents said "That's old, no one likes that anymore. Don't you want to play new stuff? NES graphics and sound sucks!", even though I really wanted to play Mario 3 again but couldn't, having to deal with dumbass parents who thought "No one wants to play a video game that's more than 5 years old".That's literally how most people over a certain age felt about vidya, there was no real value to it, just disposable shit that aged badly, and ideally "those damn kids" were supposed to drop the video games at a certain age and start going into real life, just like toys, except at least with toys, boomers could argue about "muh craftmanship" or some retarded shit. Couldn't do that with vidya when it's code in a cartridge. The whole vidya nostalgia shit is a recent phenomenon that just wasn't there that much (if at all) in the 90s and early 2000s. Sure, by the mid to late 2000s, people suddenly took notice and realized there was value to those cartridges and systems, but for the longest of time, retro vidya was seen as something only lame ass gen X nerds were into, the kind of stay at home deadbeats who were on tv.
>>12911909Also it was the same with music, a good amount of boomers literally dropped their fucking record collection for various greatest hits shit on CDs, not giving a shit about whether those CD masters were decent or those records were actually worth a damn. I was the weird 5 year old in the late 90s thinking records were cool and magical, everyone else around me thought that shit was worthless junk we moved away from once CDs became less of an enthusiast format and more of a standard format. Thankfully my parents were more encouraging with that and gave me a fisher price turntable that worked with just about any standard record.
I suppose it's understandable when most games people had were EA sports slop. I always kept the boxes and read them and the booklet a hundred times, but I tended to only have games with decent box art (Ranger X, Mercs, Alisia Dragoon, Toejam & Earl 2...)
Loved these box arts as a kid>PAL formatwe still had better boxes, american games tended to get gimped boxart and for some retarded reason they didn't even make them full sized.
>>12911997We used to play this one for hours. At first pretty much unbeatable but after some time we made it through - cool game!
>>12912014I can 1cc the arcade game and max out the score.the Genesis version was rebalanced for some reason, the flamethrower is weaker, the shotgun can clean sweep the entire screen, tanks have far more HP (you pretty much need a bomb on each one).Original mode was the tits though, I just wish it gave you enough powerups to max out everyone; at the minimum the Homing guy on the last level couldn't get extra speed boosts which made him very vulnerable (at least he can get a flak jacket).
>AmericansI kept all of my boxes, as best as I can recall. Condition isn't the for best for all of them, though. That said, this isn't exclusively an American thing. I buy a lot of Japanese games, and there are almost literally countless loose copies out there, many in beat to hell "player copy only" condition which require extensive cleaning to even work (as in, muh Q-tip and IPA is nowhere near enough and you have to use a more powerful cleaner)
>>12911784how the fuck are action figures or whatever superior to video games,i think you are the retard.
>>12912209That's literally what adults (boomers) thought back then, they thought vidya was something you drop forever once you turn 13 or something (like a toy) as they thought "yeah, who wants to play an annoying beepy bloopy thing?"
>>12911784>You were a dumb kid thenImagine being so retarded that you can be trolled by a 12yo into believing they/them was alive """back then"""wew lad
The entire concept of portable consoles is anti-keeping boxes>time to go out, let me take a giant stack of Gameboy game boxes with me
>>12911325
>>12911325We were poor and could only afford used games.
games are for playing, not staring at
As everyone said already, they came in cardboard, and in the 90s and 2000s they were seen as disposable, and only the game mattered. It was only with Gamecube and DS that people started keeping the cases because in GC case they were discs and they were better left inside cases than lying around to get scratched (some people still got rid of cases and put them in binders) or in DS case the box was convenient and had an extra slot for GBA cart storage (but there are also a lot of loose DS carts, so people also got rid of cases in favor of keeping their game carts in carrying cases instead)
>>12911325>Americanskek, pretty much everyone did that though
People are more likely to keep durable boxes. I had all of my Genesis boxes, but not N64.
>>12911325I saved every box and every insert for every game and console I owned from NES, GameBoy, Genesis, SNES, PS1, and N64. I kept all my games in immaculate condition. Then one day in 1999 I decided I was done playing video games forever, put it all in garbage bags, and put it in a barrel for the trashmen to pickupWHAT THE FUCK WAS I THINKING
>>12911325Dumb esl poster
>>12913168>WHAT THE FUCK WAS I LARING
>>12911347because they were bulky plastic crap that made the cartridges take up 5x more space than they do without it. Even if it was a clamshell it was still just disposable packaging.
Famicom Disk System cases were the ideal packaging design.
>>12913168you dun goofd
>>12913283no its true. and I dont think I went a full year before playing vidya again and getting addicted to mmorpgs
>>12914810>I dont thinklol. The only truth that has ever come out of your larper thumbs.
>>12914917>>12914917no youre right. I didnt do that stupid thing I claimed. I'm actually perfect. millions in the bank, big fat cock in my pants, and every video game released between 1980 and 2006 CIB in my collection.foolish of me to try to trick you like that. its tough trying to fit in with you losers, but driving lambos and smashing mad hos gets old so I was trying to find a new high here on the 4chans retro vidya board
>>12911909>>12911916i think there is also something to be said about the general culture of disposal among americans. they love to just throw shit in the garbage (or deliberately destroy it for fun) when the new thing comes out, its good because its new and buying new things makes me feel good, and not because of any logical reasoning. new things are always good, why would you want something thats old? this applies for literally anything you can think of, not just games or music.
>>12911916>>12911909This is painfully accurate. People not living through this may think it's a joke but it's really a thing that happened.
>>12914929>i don't always cope but when i do i cope hard>always copes
>>12911325Did you hold onto every box your action figures came in as a kid?>>12911347Yeah it made sense to keep the clamshell cases for Sega games, but a lot of Genesis games also came in cheap cardboard.
>>12915425I know you do
>>12915798>no u>always copes
>>12911607Some people were super spoiled. In our family we knew they were expensive so why not take care of them. When I was young my parents did throw out the first console box so I made sure to keep everything safe after that.>>12911719When you are not rich you have more of an appreciation of how much things cost.>>12911808Mine GB games made it but I had to consciously make sure they were out of my parents way.>>12913168I think most people have that why I am even keeping this stuff phase. For about a 5 year period I was a bit like that, I even got rid of some almost brand new crt's but just put the games in boxes, it was years ago so I didn't understand the concept that crt's wear out over time.>>12914937People starting throwing out electronics even if they were perfectly working, even my parents started doing that.>>12911842Even sitting in boxes is possible for them to get damaged whenever they are moved so I want to scan everything I have in top quality so at least replicas can be made. I have 20 N64, 50 nes and probably 50 pc game boxes. Once anyone can make a mint box for $5 I think most people just won't bother anyway but they it can be used in VR.
>>12911325what cases?those games came in flimsy cardboard that was half beat up by the time you bought it anyway. why would you keep this?
>>12915962We weren't really rich by any means, we still threw the boxes and manuals out. It's not like we needed that shit, just the cartridges, and most of the NES games we had were "Press A to jump" anyways. No one really thought there was any actual resale value past "Okay, we sell it at a tag sale for a buck, and maybe some weirdo will buy it, not like anyone is still playing the old Nintendo or would want to anyways."
>>12911719>>12911607>>12911325Show me the box for every electronic appliance you own, surely you have the box your microwave came in right? And your toaster? And your speakers? and your DVD player? Are you getting the idea? Saving boxes was something nobody did unless you had a giant basment to thow stuff in or you reused the bigger boxes for other stuff.
>>12916010I save every box for years. thats never the goal. I always intend to just keep it for the return period, and in some cases the warranty. but fast forward 10 years and I'm looking at a couple boxes in my cellar for coffee makers I dont even have any more
>>12915903see>>12915798
>>12916010a cart isn't a whole appliance. this is more like throwing out the boxes of your CDs and DVDs because you can just put them in spindles. Or before that, removing the plastic cases of VHS tapes.>>12916043Same here, except I keep the boxes because I sell shit I don't need, and the boxes come handy for postage. They do take a lot of space though, especially when I get stuck in a slump and not post any ads for months.
>>12911325>Are you insane ?Yes. You asshole.
>>12916058you can always collapse empty appliance boxes and retape them later when you need a box
>>12916058>this is more like throwing out the boxes of your CDs why would I keep a CD box? there's a perfectly good jewel case that came with.
>>12911325>Are you insane ?Did you eat all the donuts? /HL1scientist
