its so much better than the shitty psp demake its unreal. possibly the best looking and sounding game on the entire console. Having the full blown skill system, PAs, all the recruitable characters, fully voiced battles on a snes cart is ridiculous. Battle system is spammy like star ocean 2 but satisfying. Enormous 30 floor post game dungeon. For some reason this will be a hot take but to me this is way more fun than ToP, too. protip: the game locks you into using ratix but there's a party member swap code I found to get around that and use whatever party comp/leader you like, which fixes the only real issue the game had. play star ocean on SNES, its an actual hidden gem. I think the incredible downgrade of a remake has unfairly ruined its reputation
I like the setting and aesthetic, but the combat system is inferior to Tales of Phantasia (which is saying something) and it's incredibly buggy. Very easy to lose hours of progress because key events won't trigger, or even worse you save your game after the bug occurs and you have to restart the entire game. Also, fuck having an optional dungeon that does nothing but kill one of your characters permanently.
>>12911774Im in the last dungeon and none of those things happened to me even with my party swap fuckery. Though I agree phantasia has better combat (neither are great) but I think everything else about SO is better.
>>12911774>n optional dungeon that does nothing but kill one of your characters permanently.qrd
>>12911774>Also, fuck having an optional dungeon that does nothing but kill one of your characters permanently.Im trying to look up information on this online and cant seem to find anything? Can you tell me how it works?
>>12911781>>12911782OH nvm he's talking about mavelle/marvel. She turns into Erys in the remake but is just gone in the SNES. yeah if you didnt know about it beforehand and did all that just to lose a good character Id be pissed.
>>12911770It's just kind of a flat game all around. I love it, but it isn't that special on its surface. Also nostalgia is a powerful drug. No one grew up with this in their nintendo power magazine. It's like FF5 in that regard.
>>12911781>>12911789There are 4 slots for optional party members in SO, it's not enough to recruit every character. So you'll have to choose which ones you want to recruit, on top of meeting some conditions of course.Marvel is a character that you can choose to recruit or not if you do not have Joshua in your party. If you do have Joshua however she'll always join you, so if you do not want her in your party and want that slot for some other character instead, there's an optional dungeon that you can do for the sole purpose of removing Marvel from your party.
>>12911770>why does no one talk about thisI could be misremembering but I believe that's the one with more than a few missables.2 decades ago, I wouldn't whine about this, but having played so many games for over 2 decades where I didn't have to worry about missing something that you can only get if you'd known about it in advance, especially when there's so many other JRPGs (or just /v/ in general) I could be playing instead, just makes it feel like a chore to have to check GameFAQs for them, and that's why I drop the whole game (before I even start it) altogether instead.
>>12913158>I cant enjoy a game unless I can check every box in the checklist
>>12913158For forbid you can’t horde 100% of the digital nicknacks that have zero values once the credits roll in a 30 year old game
>>12913353I mean might as well do a "perfect run" if I'm going to bother playing it.Otherwise, I'm probably better off just watching someone else play it on YT or something
>play normally>protagonist and main girl get together in the ending, everyone is happy>try to go for someone else the second time>try to manipulate relationship values>also try to get other characters together>also choose the other route in the part where there's a fork>everyone ends alone, sad ending
>>12911770It's fun and unlike ToP it is not riddled with bullshit filler that bloats the playtime but outside of Item Creation, which is mostly shit in this game because it requires insane amount of reloading to get anything decent even when maxed out and SP cost reduction skill eating up the vast majority of your SP, i don't find it particularly interesting. The party member swap code does sound like a way to get even more replay value out of it though.
>>12913903>it is not riddled with bullshit filler that bloats the playtime>every dungeon is a labyrinth with almost zero puzzles>have to travel the entire world multiple times to unlock the hidden fast travel
>>12911770I got excited about it too, then after the intro it became really generically boring.
>>12913428Reads like my life. Guess which one.
>>12911770Star Ocean is on the GBC and it blows shit as Pokemon out of the water, from sheer detail, gameplay depth, game feel, and the like.
>>12918293Is this actually good? Was thinking of picking it up.
>>12918442Hell yes. Although the level up system is very foreign to most JRPGs so i hope it's not an issue
