How was GoldenEye 007 perceived by FPS fans when it came out? Did PC gamers think it was good?
They thought console FPS were stupid and looked like crapBut then once they got "Goldeneye but worse and with a woman", that became GOTY
I had two friends, one had a PC with Quake and Half-Life, and the other had a PS1. Well, every Wednesday afternoon for two years, they’d come over to my place so the four of us could play GoldenEye. Then, for another two years, we played Perfect Dark. And after that, it was Halo...
>>12914262Yea funny how that works. Even when I had my Xbox ps2 and gamecube plus a pc for vanilla wow, we still had constant game sessions w the 64, Mario kart 64, wrestlemania 2000/no mercy/wcw vs NWO revenge, rush 2, goldeneye, perfect dark (even w all the slowdown had a blast), bomberman 64 and so on and so forth.
>>12913876It was awesome, i think I was 15 at the time. The multiplayer was good of course but for me I think it was the huge amount of different guns, the soundtrack, and the realistic settings. Most other FPS games I'd played had a lot of fantasy stuff where you were mainly shooting monsters instead of people
>>12913876When I was a kid I thought the N64 was designed for FPS games specifically because of the controller. Turok 1 and 2, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark. Excellent games.
>>12914343>Even when I had my Xbox ps2 and gamecube plus a pc for vanilla wow, we still had constant game sessions w the 64I had this same experience. To a t.It was the multi-player party machine.
>>12914360You had a fun childhood teenage: early college years too in gaming I see?
>>12913876I never really enjoyed it growing up because of the controls. Once I played it a few years back on mister with controls mapped to a modern dual analog controller, I enjoyed the shit out of it
>>12913876It was revolutionary on consoles. PC gamers thought it was great too. They tried making a source mod version of Goldeneye's multiplayer. I preferred the singleplayer, honestly.
>>12913876>How was GoldenEye 007 perceived by FPS fans when it came out?wasn't well received >Did PC gamers think it was good?no. they had faster and superior games
>>12913876>never had a N64>emulated it like 3 times and didn't like it>gave it another chance the new recomp>didn't like it as welldid people only like it for the multiplayer?the single player is awfully bland and boring
>>12914998multiplayer was definitely the biggest component, including co-op play. perfect dark has a much better single player though, playing the recomp feels like you're playing a pc fps from 1998.
>>12914998>did people only like it for the multiplayer?some did. i tried to like it but the framerate was a bit painful. apparently the idea for multiplayer came along late in development - and it really shows!
Sour grapes cus they couldn't play it
>>12913876>perceived by FPS fansYou barely need to aim to win, the framerate is way too low.Even Duck Hunt on the NES is more of a fps than GE
>>12915060Do you need to aim in doom, doom2, heretic, hexen, blood, shadow warrior, duke nukem? No. No you don't because they have auto aim. And yet theyre the best fps games ever made.
>>12913876>Did PC gamers think it was good? They still seethe about it, so let that be the judge.
>>12915068>Do you need to aim in doom, doom2, heretic, hexen, blood, shadow warrior, duke nukem?Yes, even though they are limited by their engine technologyQuake II and Half life shaped the next geneneration of fps
>>12913876>Did PC gamers think it was good? With emulator, 60 fps mod, mouse, keyboard, and manual aiming, it's good. On real N64 hardware it's fucking miserable.
>>12915060the rifle being static jpg with no recoil makes this game no better than flash games
>>12915068Fake PC elitists are idiots like this and you know they're making up shit retroactive reason as to why something is not supposed to be good.>>12915109>Quake II and Half life shaped the next geneneration of fpsAs did Goldeneye, which Half-Life itself was very influenced by, along with the rest of them. Goldeneye basically defined how 'realistic FPS' would play for the future, and FPS devs respected the fuck out of it, unlike LARPing mustards.
>>12915339It didn't lol. GE devs moved on and created Timesplitters, which is almost a carbon copy of GE.Timesplitters felt dated and obsolete next to Half Life.
Nearly everyone like it and thought it was great. Especially the split screen multiplayer. It combined a lot of the things pc games where doing separately into one game. Results depended on where you shot the target (Rare said this was taken from Virtua Cop), it had objective based missions (supposedly inspired by Mario 64). It had a sniper rifle (possibly inspired by the Terminator pc games), and it had a wide assortment of weapons like most pc games of the time. You could go about some levels in different ways. Of course many pc games were great at the time too and did certain things better, but to get all these newish ideas at once in one game on a console, its no wonder it did so well. I’m sure there were some real nerdy pc snobs who got all hot and bothered back then just like there are now, and they may be technically right about how Goldeneye is inferior to whatever pet game they’re hawking in some specific way. But Goldeneye was a game for the common person. It blended ideas. It was made for the console owner, it wasn’t a watered down port. It had some style too, that pause music is a banger. The cheats are lots of fun.
>>12915324Remember the recoil in Quake? Oh wait. Also, the "recoil" was in the rumble Pak that us based console chads got to use while you fiddled with your gay little mouse with a ball
>>12913876PC gamer here. Yes we thought it was really good.
>>12915572I remember the recoil in Quake 2 being a gamechanger, yes.
>>12913876After school, my neighborhood hopped over to the YMCA where we all played Goldeneye and Mario Kart.
