Why does Mario Sunshine catch so much heat compared to other 3D Mario's? It's the only one that really feels like a proper sequel to 64. Sure, I know the game can be difficult at times (I was filtered by that sand bird stage as a kid) but isn't it good when a game challenges you? Especially back when you were a kid and only really got a handful of new games per year, the longer a game lasted the better. I remember being so disappointed when I got some games and cleared them in an afternoon because they posted no challenge whatsoever.

Mario sunshine was dog shit, the backpack was fun for like a minute, the platforming parts where you lose your backpack should have been fun but too many times you would glitch through platforms youre trying to jump on (I played recently on original hardware). Its just aggravating. The setting and graphics are nice though but the gameplay was subpar for a freakin mario game. Galaxy made up for it though. The issue with Sunshine is that they misunderstood what people liked about games about collecting shit, which is not the amount of content but how well designed it is to get those. FLUDD is a gimmick that is less fun to play than just jumping around and this by itself already makes it a worse game, then you get in how bloated the game is with blue coins having silly not even clear conditions to show up.
