My Archolos build was bullshit. Had high STR and DEX, used one-handed DEX melee weapons, I had a crossbow (I didn't use it much, admittedly), and maxed out spell circles, although my mana pool was rather humble. It wasn't a problem, though, because I used the mana regen set.

I just played through Gothic 1. It was nauseating dogshit. The entire game had me running joyless errands. Nice jogging simulator for homosexuals. The end game swarmed me with hordes of enemies until it was unceremoniously over. My only other Gothic experience was 3 in 2006 which was garbage. I'm not holding my breath for 2. If 2 games so far were bad I'm not expecting a masterpiece from the most hyped of them.

You are right. About 65% of the game is just foreplay, 10% sex, and 25% just wanting to get it over with because you've had enough.
This game does appeal to people who unironically enjoy the realistic approach to a fantasy realm i.e. you'd get rekt most of the time unless you tread lightly, make friends or learn 2 cheese.

If you're still mentally flexible enough to learn a new combat system, try gothic 2 with a good mod (try archolos by all means). They fix the levelling system and make it fun. Gothic2 combat system is unusual, but interesting, tactical and skill-based.
Gothic2 and archolos have a great atmosphere and interesting (if small) world, actually quite comparable to skyrim IMO.

From what I can tell it's either the parallel patch or DXVK doing the heavy lifting, there is some shader compilation stutters in first few minutes of entering a new area but past that It's been solid.
There's also this G3CU tool that can uncompress textures but I haven't tried that didn't feel like it was necessary but if you run into problems you can try that as a last ditch effort.

Legitimately has too much slow walking, is otherwise quite an easy game once you know what you're doing. Also use the animation hack to turn off pickup animations.

G2 NOTR
I beat it twice but I couldn't deviate to anything other than master sword to raven claw str stacking because everything else felt like bad damage. Also has too much walking. Also turn off the animations for pickups.

G3
Is actually much more pleasant to play if you're past G1 G2 first/second impressions. It's clearly not very well finished and much unlike G3 but it's very comfortable to play and the comm patch has many features to make it very convenient. If I had to play gothic again I'd pick 3, first two are very linear in terms of optimal play. But I also feel like anything other than magic is unplayable in G3, maybe str maxing and spin to win would work.

Mastersword (can be bought from Martin in Harbor or looted from thieves guild) gives +10 one handed skill, Betty (better dex sword from swamp bandit camp) gives +8 one handed skill with better damage
so that's 20 or 18 one handed skill
with all tablets for one handed (+24 one handed skill) so that's 44 or 42 one handed skill
Morgan's ring boosts another 10% one handed skill (now we are at 54 or 52)
if you arrive at Khorinis Barracks around 5 AM you can get free training for +2 one handed skill for free (now 56 or 54)
so you can spend an extra 4 or 6 LPs at the start and have 60 one handed skill with fastedt animation and okay chance to score full hit

Bows also have decent range you can kill most enemies before they can even get to you without cheese spots. And obviously cheese spots exist, the obvious one is the battering ram near the castle in VoM.
Bows cannot be parried dodged or blocked.
Bows can go over 100% skill since skill determines range and not crit chance, not really worth it but you can go up to 120%.
You can get more dex than str in NOTR, there's a limited amount of dragon roots but if you kill paladins in the city they have about 10% chance of dropping a goblin berry. It's possible to use all 25 king sorrels on dex potions.
The weakness of a bow is that it's kind of all or nothing weapon, you either have the stats or you don't but it's not hard to get enough stats. Trolls are immune to bow attacks but that's barely a problem.
Everything said applies to crossbows too, in Archolos crossbows are godlike since they also come with armor piercing on top of superior damage.

I've done all quests, killed everything that moves but up all the friendly npcs that i could minus the ship which got me one level higher than previously.
I've had to compromise some things in the build because I didn't plan things properly, in ideal world my 1h skill would be 12% lower in exchange of 6 more strength but it doesn't matter THAT much.

Chapter two completed!
Primarily for this run I wanted to avoid putting in any points into dexterity and I've spent 0LP on dex so far seeing how minimum amount for chapter 2 is 45 but that wasn't such a good idea. At 60 dex there's a better sword in Tamora as well as a bunch of level 2 lockpick chests which I couldn't open. I can return to all of them later in chapter 4 but that's still kind of ass. If there's ever a 3rd go I'll be aiming to hit 60 dex by chapter 2.
Tamora is still a major pain with everything killing me in 1 or 2 hits but there's no avoiding it, there's simply no LP available to spend on HP. You gain 0 HP per level in odyssey so current HP is from life elixirs only.
One thing I didn't realize is that you can learn all the triple jewelery and armor upgrades in chapter 2 maybe they're worth it earlier on it's something to experiment with.

From what I've seen there's a fire mage in the outer ring of the old camp that teaches magic, and I hope he's only there for the demo all the influencers got so they can show off magic.
Mages being elitist dicks, acutal CHOSEN OF THE GODS is their entire shtick. Having to work to get access to rune magic is the entire fucking point. They're not street performers that sell their divine art to the first random criminal with a fat ore purse. If the devs want magic to be more accessible at the start they should just place more scrolls to find in the world, or maybe have magic scroll making as a cheap early skill.
Not to mention that they'll have to come up with some bullshit reason why you can't just give the letter to him.

Well there's multiple things going for it
1. It's the path to the diggers as you know, you don't really have to escort them or clear the cave, after talking to the digger leader teleport to fishing village sleep until next day and they'll make it
2. There's a chest with +15 str potion, well it's the same thing as in irdorath in base game but you'd never go dex in this mod at least not on legendary
3. There's a quest to find mirror shield or something which is scattered around the cave, you need to do bunch of acrobatics tricks to get there, it's for chapter 4 or 5 you can never equip the shield itself at least I couldn't find a way
4. It's the first place with obsidian to upgrade armor or weapons
5. Fire golems for the ghost admiral quest
6. Past diggers and ogre stone circle there's also alternate entrance to Jharkendar
So yeah and it looks cool and is pretty fun to explore

Chapter three completed!
I really should just stop playing here because I more or less satisfied my curiosity about early game inefficiencies of the first run. By chapter four I figured out pretty much every optimization technique and how things work in this mod.
That said even if you optimize your character to the limit the mod is still bullshit on legendary difficulty with me barely being able to pierce shadowbeast and forest golem armor at the very end of chapter 3 and those fuckers start showing up a whole chapter ago. Legendary = 5 damage mode simulator.
But I'll probably keep going, chapter 4 was the first time my character started feeling powerful on the first go around so I'm looking forward to the slaughter this time around.
Not many new things were learned other than pumping strength as much as possible, no matter how inefficient paying 5LP for 1 STR seems it's worth it, strength is truly the only stat that matters on this entire page.

Archolos is the better mod no doubt, they thought of many things and I can think of only one major flaw that is dying in cutscenes by picking a wrong dialogue line, that shit is inexcusable.
The biggest problem with Odyssey is its quest design, the game has no flex at all it expects you to do things in the exact right order and any deviation can break the quest leaving you softlocked.
For example in chapter 2 there's a quest where you need a blessed sword, if you bless the sword before asking the mage where's an innos shrine which you probably already visited that's it the quest is now stuck and you bricked the main quest.
And there's dozens of instances like that, you have to tip toe around every quest. If quest log says you SHOULDN'T do something it means you ABSOLUTELY CANNOT. The game does warn you quite a bit you're about to brick your progress but there has to be a better way.

I'm not sure if I found a bug or exploit or it's supposed to work like that since tobacco blending and pipe smoking mechanics are confusing as fuck.
In odyssey you can smoke pipe to gain permanent stats, str, dex, hp, mana, magic knowledge. Obviously strength is the best one and the double apple tobacco is the rarest one.
Because this mechanic is stupid what you need to do is smoke 4 "filler" tobaccos and then smoke double apple as the 5th one to get the most out of it.
Now it is possible to blend tobacco just like vanilla but there is a x10 option like with many crafting recipes.
If you leave 1 apple tobacco in your inventory and select x10 option eg. with swampweed you get 10 weed tobaccos to be used as filler. If you have 10 apple tobaccos all 10 get consumed by the recipe which is probably the intended effect. Then again who the fuck knows, like albin's fish soup recipe creates 5 plates of fish soup out of 1 fish and that's intended. But there's no 10x option for double apple.
I don't even know anymore, I'm exploiting it to the fullest extent available since this mod is bullshit anyway.

Transformation scrolls can be really good in Odyssey. For reference these lions would kill me in two hits and take like 10+ hits to be killed, using this scroll saved probably like 15-20 minutes of fighting.

Never played normal but relative to legendary on normal enemies should deal 40% less damage and have 25% less armor. There are also more rewards on lower difficulty levels, chests and vendors will have better loot and better armor sets you can buy earlier. There are also special skills you can buy on normal, weapon master and sniper which should help too I don't know how do they work since they're not available on legendary.
Overall I'd expect the difficulty level to be somewhat harder than NOTR but not by that much.

i just hate notr style difficulty. I hate alchemy. I dont mind buying hp with LP but I hate the reliance on perma stat potions.

G1 and g2 lore was deep as a puddle, and inconsistent between 1 and 2 anyway. The have to redo at least beliar and his role in either 1 or 2 (if a g2 remake is to exist). As for gothic3, the lore was utterly unfitting to 1/2. And I do not hope for a straight remake because the map would have the same problems as before. If they want to remake gothic3, set it up like odysee where you visit disjointed regions that are realistic and fully fleshed out by themselves, and make up an entirely new story. The lore was perfectly fine for G1/2, we didn't need 200 books nobody reads about what the gods ate for breakfast like in TES. It was perfectly content with going with what was necessary and nothing else. The inconsistencies were inconsequential and could be explained by bad info. It was a prison away from the outside, they didn't know what was going on.

G3s lore is just ignoring literally everything that was established except for the fact there is a place called Myrthana and they are at war with Orcs. That was everything they didn't just retcon.

I think this is another bug I've been cleaning up orcs in khorinis and one of the orc shamans dropped a rune but runes are not supposed to exist in this game. Yes NPCs have them and you can obtain them through ice block glitch but that's clearly not intended for player use.
It's circle 6 so I can't use it yet and the damage is low so it feels useless but maybe there's a catch.

Chapter four completed!
I'm losing patience for this run seeing how somehow I have less XP in this run than in the last one so I'm getting sloppy with cleaning up all the maps but levels at this point don't really matter that much with me having 150+ spare learning points, there's just nothing to learn at this point.
They're not actually that spare chapter 5 is shorter and will unlock a bunch of shit which includes circle 6 magic, language of the builders, dark magic and finally raising my 1h skill to 100% which should use up most of these points.Last run I've invested into crossbow which was a big mistake, magic is just plain better with improved small firestorm I was able to save myself a load of time by aoe'ing groups of enemies. Chapter 5 also provides artifacts(runes) of small firestorm and army of darkness which will greatly help in combat, only scrolls are available until this point. The combat is actually reasonable I stopped getting killed in two hits, and it only took more than 100 in game hours, woohoo!
Not much really happens from here character growth wise, number goes up and I keep swinging the best available 1 handed sword until I get uriziel which you get at like the 98% completion mark.

nta but yes. runs on my 1080 no ti shitbox. some gentle eurojank but nothing i would call major or distracting, it's less than what the OG had.
graphics are nice, german VO better than I thought from what I heard from previews, combat actually feels solid.
crime system seems op, so far i've not been spotted sneaking around and emptying chests without putting levels into sneaking or lockpicking. though the lockpicking minigame is nicely challenging, i quite like it.
overall theydidagoodjob/10
side note: did not leave old camp yet.

They really went all in with the locations. The swamp camp is amazing, one of the best swamps I've seen in games. When you go to the beach the barrier has this cool effect on the ocean, it looks like it's pulling the water up. Really well done.

Use scrolls potions consumables etc. don't save things for later. You will never find yourself in a position where it's impossible to progress because you've used too many consumables.The only exception are strength or dexterity permanent stat upgrades.
If you're paranoid you can leave yourself 2 ice blocks 2 ice waves 2 summon demons and 2 rains of fire, this set of scrolls will get you through ANY roadblock. With every level you gain scrolls become less useful so earlier they're used the better the effect.

Another not sure if bug, if you equip a 2h weapon first and then equip a shield you can have all the benefits of the shield while wielding 2h weapon. Shields suck in this mod they change your moveset and I think the second tier of shield parrying doesn't do anything, I still buy it because it's 3LP and there's nothing to spend them on. Don't know why it's called parrying either because you can't parry or block projectiles, arrows bolts or magic it doesn't do anything.
I still doubt this is worth it over just the standard 1h setup but it makes the shield skill not utterly worthless like I thought previously.

Is the remake really worth the bankbusting price tag?

Chapter five completed!
Well that was fast, liberating Varant from the assassins was so easy I don't think I've even died once I feel really powerful at this moment, that resembles the last run, the mod stopped being painful on legendary around chapter 4.
But what doesn't resemble last run is my level, last time I was three levels higher and I have no idea what did I miss. The game was patched since I last played but I won't dig into it as there is literally no more LPs to be spent. I've bought every skill and spell I need I maxed out all of my combat skills that I'm going to use and there's still like 30 more levels to get. In retrospect maybe more points should've been allocated to HP, but too late now I'm past the 1.5k hp cap.
After 139 hours on the seas it's time to return home, to Athanos!
