What is /vrpg/ opinion on the Octopath Traveler series
>>
>>3957705
first game is the most broken but also feels the best to play. the second game confuses being "bigger" with being "better" and a lot of the rebalances and additions actually end up feeling worse. don't know anything about 0, CotC is gachaslop.
>>
>>3957705
I tried the first game. One of the ugliest games I've ever played. I can't stand all the post processing bullshit effects they slapped on. "Look at these beautiful pixels ... but not over there or there, because we put a darkening vignette to obscure the screen AND an extreme depth of field blur everywhere."
Combat-wise, I loved it. The stories I thought were really solid too.
But more than the graphics I absolutely despised the structure. Reading the first chapter of 8 different books, then sequentially reading the next chapter of each of them is atrocious. And the game doesn't appear to be beatable without it, because they gatelock so much behind high level encounters. It's like an mmo. I put the game down after getting four people and realizing I'd need to get them all to continue. I don't think I've ever played a more frustrating and disappointing game. Will never touch the sequels.
>>
>>3957705
When I realized that there are only actually 4 path actions with 2 different flavors each it killed a lot of my interest in the game. It made the characters feel less special when their gimmick isn't actually unique to them.

>>
I thought the first one was bad. The combat is grindy and the characters' stories are all generic. I'd rather have one interesting campaign than eight boring campaigns.
>>
>>3958393
Uggo.
I'd rather Kyastti.
>>
>>3957865
I don't know enough about graphic design or art so the first point you mentioned wasn't something I would have experienced. The mechanics of the game, coupled with the interwoven stories, was enough for me to really enjoy my time playing it. The second game as well. They have superbosses, something else I really like.

I knew going in that it would be juggling the stories since it mirrored SaGa Frontier in that regard, so it was a non-issue. I can see why it would be frustrating for somebody wanting to experience a whole, fluid narrative though.

I haven't tried 0, dunno if I will. It looks like it took mobile then slapped on a bunch of shine to call it a game. I might play it if I get it cheap, otherwise meh. The first two games are good though.
>>
>>3958438
>I haven't tried 0, dunno if I will.
It has a really slow start but it's another case of "it gets good after 10 hours".
They brought the build autism to the next level. Not only you have 8 active members, most of the skills of each member can be taught to the others, you can do a lot of cool shit with this system.
The town builder part is also fun.
If you enjoyed the other two games for the mechanics there's no way you won't also enjoy 0.

1 is a good start for a series though i want to strangle whoever came up with the true last boss (the fight itself is amazing but the path to said fight..)
2 is better but also worse than 1 in a way, maybe i rate 2 higher than it should because some of jap seiyuu i like are there+ochette has kinda fun monster catching mechanic
CotC is okay if you are fine with passive protag. Gameplay is watered down from other games but with 8 niggas instead of 4. Suffers from being a gacha where powercreep is absurd, dupes being important for some characters and its an old game so fuckton of timegated shit you must grind to do mid-endgame stuff
Didn't bother to play 0 because i heard its basicly single player CotC with more story. Probably better to play this instead of CotC if you never played that before
My problem with octopath 1 and 2 is the lack of level scaling but routes keeps track of character levels from other routes you cleared which ruins the difficulty. Early on you can simply avoid using high leveled chars but later on impossible to do so unless you self handicap like doing 2-3 niggas party
>>
>>3959881
It's cool if you prefer the original audio but dubs have come a long way. Voice actors do a great job and not everybody wants to read text when there is other stuff on the screen to look at. I know you're being hyperbolic but it comes off as idiotic.

>>
>>3961058
>Worse weakness systems than the persona/SMT games
Are they not basically the same thing except you need more weakness hits here? I've never understood all the praise SMT gets for its battle system. Is there something I'm missing beyond "Hitting a weakness gets you an extra turn"? I've only played P3 and SMT V
>>
>>3961064
>Is there something I'm missing
No, that's literally it. Weakness system is nothing like Persona/SMT because you already know the bigger focus is on hitcounts + breaking + concentrated burst damage for Octopath compared to just getting more actions upon hitting a weakness instead.
>>
>>3961064
My complain is that the playable characters didn't have weaknesses themselves, and persona/smt have a more nuanced resistance system (repel/resist/drain/null). This is a big problem for me, I want consistent themes and rules since they marketed it like a system from the beginning
Also I'm not arguing in favor of Press Turn btw, I find that system bad too, as you said, "Hit weakness gain extra turn"
>>

The battle system is "fine" but feels pretty shallow. The real deathblow to the game for me is how the campaign is structured. I originally expected something like SaGa Frontier with 8 characters whose different stories sometimes overlap. Instead it's

over and over and over and it sucked ass. Basically fuck that game. Also I found most of the characters uninteresting.

Aaaaand done, I'm finally free.
Very short review:
-While I enjoyed the customization and freedom, they need to do something about the difficulty, it was way too fucking easy. This is the third time and it only got worse.
-Too many skills that do the same shit.
Don't give me "axe attack that does 1.4x damage", and then "axe attack that does 1.8x damage". We have boost for that, don't waste a slot like this, give me something unique.
Not sure why I'm writing this as no dev will ever read it.
-The game was way more story driven, too bad I didn't give a single fuck about any character, and I just started skipping all scenes at some point. This has happened in every game. Hire better writers already.

See you in octo 3 niggas.

>>

Phenn and Pious were mainstays on my team. Their Ultimates were very useful whenever I was fighting the little mini boss enemies in areas I definitely should not have been in. I also gave Phenn the skill that lets you choose an equipped weapon and attack 5-8 times as well as Mystic Shot for SP management. Therion, who was mainly there for his thievery skill set, was my designated charge donate bot.
>>
>>3969181
Pius's ultimate is so good for the sheer damage swing it faciliates, and I agree that Phenn's damage reduction can be a big boon for battles with big dick damage bosses/enemies. If I used his ultimate more and in smart ways in the Warbringer Phantom battle, I probably wouldn't have needed an Almighty Olive.
>>
>>3969215
I missed and whiffed a break opportunity against that boss and had to do the same thing, even when I was alternating (and occasionally layering the last turn if I had a bad turn order next turn) their ultimates. I feel like it was a worthwhile expense, considering how early I took down the boss.

Only played the 1st. I liked the way you could use the stripper's gambling skill to get a bazillion experience. I didn't like the way the character arcs didn't meaningfully interact, the whole "octopath" bit was a flop. More RPGs should use the FF5 class system like this.
>>
>>3969523
>stripper's gambling skill to get a bazillion experience
I'll admit I chuckled at this description since it's actually accurate.
>>
>>3957806
>the second game confuses being "bigger" with being "better" and a lot of the rebalances and additions actually end up feeling worse.
This is the correct take. Second game suffers from bloat and imbalances the gameplay loop even more. Somehow the dialogue is even more overbearing, and the dungeons feel even shorter and more pointless. The battle system was ruined by giving every character too much utility. Some battles will be so easy you can just spam attack, but as soon as they get hard enough that you can't do that, each character has so many tricks up their sleeve that they could all end the battle in a single turn, which means that even when the combat gets harder, it's still boring. There's a difference between being forced to strategize, and being forced to pick how you win.

I've spent the past year playing a lot of early 90s JRPGs, and it's actually insane how thoroughly the Octopath games bungles up just about everything that actually made those old games good. It really is just a modern, bloated movie-game cosplaying as a retro JRPG.
>>
>>3969523
>More RPGs should use the FF5 class system like this.
FF5's class system is about a hundred times better than whatever the fuck was in Octopath Traveler.
>>
>>3969763
If you want the "everyone can do everything with enough time and effort", sure. That said, I like how Octopath's class system both ties into the games' characters and into their mythology, and helps with setting very clearly defined roles that works with the class in question.
>>
>>3970879
>If you want the "everyone can do everything with enough time and effort", sure.
The satisfaction of FF5 is that you get to define the roles yourself, then switch over to Freelancer/Mime in the endgame to reap all the benefits. If you decide to sit around grinding for hours on end to make everyone do everything, that's certainly your privilege, but has nothing to do with why it's better than Octopath.

Is Therion a no-brainer first character in OT1 or is there nothing worthwhile in red chests he can unlock?
>>
>>3969761
live a live did what octopath traveler wanted to almost 25 years prior, and did it without shared bloat.
>>
>>3970979
Pick whoever you like better. You can grab Therion early so it doesn't really matter, you might have to go back for like 1-2 chests. Olberic is the obvious and only choice.
>>
>>3970979
honestly more for stealing. backtracking for some chests is a small hassle compared to clearing out towns with savescumming and GUARANTEED steals from low health enemies.
>>
>>3970911
>The satisfaction of FF5 is that you get to define the roles yourself, then switch over to Freelancer/Mime in the endgame to reap all the benefits.
Yeah, that's the point. You just do whatever, then switch to doing anything you want to do in the end. It's fine in it's own way, but Octopath having a defined base role that you can supplement and/or build on with additional skills is an equally valid way to use a class system.

>>3957705
my opinion is that throne would be cuter if she was a twink i could fuck. throne also best character in the series btw

Played the first game, gameplay was ok, but the storytelling was awkward. You have multiple characters in the party, but the characters are treated as them being alone in the story. Didn't bother to play the other games because of that.

I think this is pretty much the consensus from the critics.
I'd like to add that I hate the fact they are advertising it like a grand multi-character adventure from the trailers but really dropped the ball on the execution.

I've been playing 0 and the storytelling's genuine dogshit. It's like they look for "alright now make it 5x as long by inserting pointless tragedies". Bargello's worthless and the other two initial storylines aren't very good. Master of All is stretched to fuck. Bestower present you with the guy you've got to kill and then you spend four hours getting yapped at and trekking everywhere before you finally get to actually kill them. Octopath Traveler is what happens when someone says, “What if we made eight JRPG protagonists,” and then forgot to let them talk to each other. You spend 80 hours assembling the Avengers, only for every cutscene to act like the other seven people are standing ten feet away pretending to be invisible.
>Villager: “Alfyn, I need your help!”
Meanwhile, there's a master thief, a world-famous dancer, a hunter with a giant snow leopard, and a literal warrior demigod standing behind him like background NPCs.
>"My name is Therion. I trust nobody."

NTA but I suppose it's an acquired taste for a niche series which you don't factor in.
Music is pleasant (although I personally don't care for the random encounter music other than the ones of the OT2 ship).
The battle system of focusing on breaking and boosting gives some players incentive to mess around with various setups for the weakness system and the satisfying damage output during break when you know what you're doing. Add that with the subjob system allowing you to play around with the characters a bit to make some strong combos to break the game even more. And Team Asano games allow you to break them apart (Bravely Default Stillness, BD2 Godspeed Strike, etc) which is enjoyable to autistic character builders.
Ikushima has a clean sense of character design where there's variety and a surprisingly good treatment to male character designs since older guys barely take up a slot in other RPGs rife with fuccboi twinks. Osvald sexo
And I guess I just like the fact that you're not exactly arbitrarily gatekept from most of the locations in the game at any point in the stories, so exploring places where you shouldn't be and even successfully stealing/scrutinizing things that most game normally shouldn't be letting you get/do without the corresponding story flags.

So to offer my counterpoints.
>brave and break battle system
I don't like it. I'm not going to say my opinion is the only correct thing, but I find the system restrictive. Your best option at dealing damage is through breaking weaknesses first and then spamming your strongest move.
And the variation of moves you can do is pretty limited as well.
>open world nature
i can agree that this is one thing I like about the series. So they gave us Path Actions to supplement this feature which I just think is wasted potential by making every interaction feels the same. Path actions were very formulaic. If we are talking about stealing in rpgs we already have things like Oblivion where stealing will result in a fight when discovered. I wish there was more interactivity with it. Likewise with Scrutinize literally is just extra information which is crazy because we could literally have a cool dialogue battle instead of just "press x to scrutinize".
Some PAs being duplicates of each other is also disappointing.

Octopath I/II also marketed their characters pretty bigly, which I find a huge disappointment with how they executed it currently. If they clearly don't want to focus on it they could've just focused on making the dungeons (right now it's just hallways) and exploration more meaningful. Instead we get cardboard characters with cliched, boring personalities.

Honestly Octopath II has lots of potential but just failed big time on the execution. I liked Triangle Strategy better honestly.

>cool dialogue battle instead of just "press x to scrutinize
sounds like a waste of time minigame just to get some information, would get boring and annoying quickly
>cardboard characters with cliched, boring personalities
don’t know why you say this like it’s supposedly something bad. You must hate 99% JRPGs then.
>If we are talking about stealing in rpgs we already have things like Oblivion where stealing will result in a fight when discovered. I wish there was more interactivity with it.
I don't know man. It sounds like you're nitpicking a lot because you really wanted this to be some CRPG where they add pointless things to make you feel more "free," like all western RPGs love to do.
>>

>sounds like a waste of time minigame just to get some information, would get boring and annoying quickly
I don't mean that everything needs a lengthy minigame. Of course there is levels to this.
>don’t know why you say this like it’s supposedly something bad. You must hate 99% JRPGs then.
I don't think I can agree with this. Give me examples of those 99% of characters in JRPGs you think is cardboard cliche personalities.
>I don't know man. It sounds like you're nitpicking a lot because you really wanted this to be some CRPG where they add pointless things to make you feel more "free," like all western RPGs love to do.
I don't want it to be exactly like CRPGs. But they introduced those path actions to make the world feel alive, they could've done better instead of making it as repetitive as of now.

How can people enjoy Octopath games when they have such a shitty combat system?
>>
>>4013960
I don't know why Octopath gets so much hate when the game is fun to play. I liked the story, and the combat, while not that complex, is pretty serviceable. Not even the oldest philosophy books get as much nitpicking and overanalysis as this game does. I don't know if some famous YouTuber made an essay video about it and now everyone is copying their opinion after seeing that or something.
>>
>>4014836
Is OT2 worth it? Haven't played OT1 because it looked kinda generic.
>>
>>4014853
Yeah, it's a huge improvement over the first one.
>>
>>4014836
You will find OT1/2 get very little traction on youtube.
And funnily there is no critical essays on it, almost all of it are positive ones.
>story
I find it very bland and mediocre.
>combat
I find break&weaknesses system too simplistic, and the job classes themselves are also pretty simplistic.

I am okay with it being called a 7/10, but you will see people who like it call it a masterpiece which I just can't agree.
Yes call me autistic about it I don't care, Square Enix games get alot of contrarian treatment but Octopath somehow get the pass from the normies. I think 4chan / reddit is where the criticisms congregated at.
>>
>>4014992
I've always found Final Fantasy X and Kingdom Hearts bland and mediocre in many ways, yet a lot of people call them masterpieces. But I don't go on a crusade against them all the time because those games aren't good enough to live rent-free in my head, and I've already forgotten most of what happens in them.
>>
>>4015001
>I've always found Final Fantasy X and Kingdom Hearts bland and mediocre in many ways, yet a lot of people call them masterpieces
Well they have alot of reasons to call them that way. I can say those two games have niches that other games didn't have, which is enough to make them unforgettable to someone.
I can't say the same with Octopath.
>But I don't go on a crusade against them all the time because those games aren't good enough to live rent-free in my head
Well the reason people go on to criticize Octopath on this website (esp. /v/) because people make threads about it constantly and paint it as some kind of new masterpiece that Square Enix made, even going so far to say it is the answer to the "turn-based crisis" that FF now has. Without any actual reasoning, just recency bias.
> I've already forgotten most of what happens in them.
It's okay, people forget JRPG stories all the time. I don't think that makes them bad though. Maybe you also have a really high expectations when you played the game. I can see my expectations of Octopath II given the amount of masterpiece shouts also soured my opinion toward it as well.
>>
This game came out forever ago, why does it not ever go on sale?
>>
>>3957705
the first game is a pretty solid JRPG. Amazing battle system and music. I personally enjoyed the artstyle love me some chibi pixel shit. Stories left a little more to be desired they're not bad just simple. With all that being said square what the fuck are you doing?? since the switch 2 came out they just completely shit themselves and have made the worst decisions possible. no upgrade paths on the majority of their games except Romancing Saga 2 remake, nice. but octopath on the switch 2 couldn't have been handled in a worse way.
>>
>>3957705
I love the art style. I know a lot don't like it, but HD-2D is fucking beautiful in my opinion.
>>

>octopath on the switch 2 couldn't have been handled in a worse way.

What was so bad about it? I don't currently own a Switch 2 and I have yet to play the games despite owning two of the three.
>>
>>4017273
Switch 2 versions are just slightly (barely) better graphics and barely tuning the bloom along with 60fps.
Nothing else.
No upgrade paths, no QoL for OT1 from OT2, no save transfers from the Switch1 versions. And key cards for "physical", I guess.

What other octopath characters will square make next? Now that we have Primrose, I’m thinking that Throné is next, her figure pose being the daytime path action artwork. Given their track record, it’ll take 3-4 years

Cute tard.

Lads, I think I got stuck, started H'annit chapter 3, but the dragon is giving me some headache, Cyrus skill showed he has a whopping 66K HP pool, and my party damage seems hella subpar, Olberic is my main character, at lv 40, and even with Lion's Dance, full powered Brand's Thunder, after breaking the boss bar, can only dish around 5k damage, Cyrus is a bit behind, dealing 3k two times with his Hailstorm after a buff, H'annit herself barely does damage even when fully charged, and Primmrose is there for the morale support and eating two break slots once in a while.
The girls are at lv 32 and Cyrus is 37. I really dunno how to ramp up my damage further than that, Thief's Shackle Foe doesn't seem it works on the firebreath and Armor Corrosion ain't increasing much of the overall damags.

Seems I done all the sidequests I could do, since I can't come to any solutions atm, shops don't offer any upgrades and I couldn't trigger the bosses of any of the side dungeons besides one with a frost giant back at lv 20, so what gives?

that honestly sounds like a gear issue, especially after stacking buffs. Have you tried breaking through towards one of the outermost towns to purchase the stronger gear there? With Cyrus' Evasive Movement and using on-route savepoints you can reset the step counter between enemy encounters to "cheese" your way through areas you cannot feasibly survive in.

Because by all means, Brand's Thunder should be one of the first skills to hit the damage cap. Also, what are their secondary classes and have you tried out various combinations yet like Primrose as a Scholar/Cleric or Olberic as an Apothecary, or H'aanit as a Thief? It reads like you don't have much healing, nor access to Sheltering Veil to increase your magic defense against the Dragon's fire. (Or the more expensive Reflective Veil).
>>
>>4023051
Didn't knew about the encounter gimmick, das neat, any towns you would recommend me visiting? The closest ch4 town that I have acess to, is Grandport, no clue which routes leads to the others and there's huge swates to land separating them for the rest.

Olberic subjob is Apotecary, Cyrus is Cleric, Primm is Scholar for those break pelting and I tried a few combinations for H'annit, party lived more when I tried Dancer, the damage increase from thief debuffs seemed minimal.

My issue with Veil is that I need 4 turns to fully set it up, pair that with Battlefield ejection and the dwagon using the breath each 2 turns, and it sucks, which there were an aoe variant
>>
>>4023108
All of them. You can savescum for steals and scrutinizes. The most difficult one would probably be the ch4 town in the Riverlands because you have to go through the Cliftlands' 2nd town area first before taking a detour into the farthest southwestern reaches there to reach the final Riverlands town. Everywhere else is fairly straightforward with their routes with no required change in biomes from town 1 > 2 > 3.
>>
>>4023108
>My issue with Veil is that I need 4 turns to fully set it up
Sealticgue's Seduction (dancer divine skill which you have to learn and can only access at max boost) sets all single target (not self-target) skills/attacks to affect the whole party.
>>
>>4023126
I tended to have issues with reaching Northreach because even with Evasive Manouvers you would have to successfully last one encounter and those fucking frogs are fast

>>4023108
As the other anon said, you can apply a Dancer's (Primrose for example), divine skill "Sealtigce's Seduction" to any ally (such as a Cleric), to make Sheltering/Reflective Veil apply to everyone. It's also useful to immunize your team against other debuffs by giving it to an Apothecary for Rehabilitate. It also turns all Single Target skills, healing, damage, buffs or otherwise, into all-targetl, so an Apothecary's stronger single-target heal will turn teamwide, likewise single target spells like Holy Light will turn into a stronger version of Luminescence. That's not important for your dragon but relevant for later encounters.

I would suggest putting Sealtigce on Primrose while running her as a cleric, that way she has access to both Physical Defense buffs (Mole Dance) and Elemental Defense (Sheltering/Reflective Veil). This should make the Dragon's offense more managable. Sadly you cannot apply Element Attack down on someone through skills, you'd have to use a Staff of Wonder or an Arcane Bow to apply it. You can use Shackle Foe to knock out its physical damage, which is why I would run H'aanit as Thief (also helps with her low SP)

Thanks for the heads up! Took a few more tries but the fight was way less one sided with better weapons and armor, the Dragon blade from the last Sunlands town helped a ton, Brand's went from dealing 5K to 23k. H'annit and Primm also endured way more thanks for the better armor, the fire resistant gear I got from the Raia's questline was the cherry on top

Finished 0. The 35 unit joint battle is pretty crazy, basically a raid boss battle. Seeing a row based skill affecting a good 18 units in one use is amazing. I think the superboss not being a joint battle too is pretty disappointing. Thanks to it, a 1-2 turn kill strat is possible again.

I read alot of bugs regarding not getting a full 100/100/100 influence score after finishing both endings, thankfully I did get it in the end. Wished the Nuts seed was available a bit earlier, like before the final dungeon so I can farm a few more seeds before the end. I read theres another update later that puts the superboss on the arena so I think theres a reason to farm Nuts cause I bet its even stronger than before.
Wonder how your MC will look with a full 999 in its stats.

I didn't even know that was a thing.
I didn't even complete Esperre's and Ophilia's bonds either and got triple 100s as well.

Okay, so this thread convinced me to buy 2 and I’ll play it when I get home. Any tips for getting started? I haven’t played a jrpg in years.
>>
>>4028044
If you are stuck get better gear and grind. Also inform yourself on avenues of counterplay to debuffs and damage types
>>
>>4027929
Apparently, finishing each endings will get you +3 score for each influence.
By the time I finish the normal ending, I got 99/99/98 so I'm worried if I'm just getting a +1 for each score once I finish the true end.

>>4028044
Go out there and explore the map and collect stuff while considering the danger level of each area. I prefer doing this so I can blast through the stories later.
Reserve your stat Nuts until you get all the jobs so you can avoid wasting them.
>>
>>4028044
Everyone's technically viable at the start, some with some caveats.
Osvald (mage) is one of the more difficult if you're cheap with money for tp restoratives (plums) since he's pretty much entirely reliant on his magic to deal damage during most of the game, but especially the earlygame. But they're all AOEs so he's the epitome of glass cannon when alone.
Throne has no AOE at all.
Temenos is extremely limited since his base offensive kit is just single-target and AOE light magic and a 2-hit staff attack that drains tp and Agnea needs all the help she can get because she's mainly a buffer in the earlygame.
