Thinking about getting into RuneScape since I'm a massive shut-in and need something to sink my life into.

Is it still worth starting as a complete noob in 2026? Give me some advice on what to do first and which version is better for someone who has never played before.

You should. Probably the best mmo ever made. OSRS just hit an all-time peak for concurrent players last summer or around then so you're not too late-- thats the version you go with btw, old school, that's the good one. My advice is do quests, they help get your levels up and they're charming and well written. Important to keep in mind that it's more a comfy long term goal simulator than a "yippee this is fun" kinda game, you'll be spending a lot of time grinding for xp and gear and it WILL get boring. Don't hesitate to use the wiki when you get stuck bc some of the quests have puzzle segments that are impossible to intuit and tedious to do thru trial and error. The patience required to play this game is exactly what makes it feel like an adventure if that makes sense, so don't get filtered.
It's the patrician shut-in game.

As long as you avoid the autist sub communities it’s a fun game that has a lot of interesting things to do. Long term RuneScape players are some of the most insufferable autists on the planet never trust them or let them convince you to do their stupid challenge runs where you willingly torture youself for “respect”.

I love OSRS, but every time I stop playing, I feel like I've escaped from a time-eating machine. It just fucking eats my life whenever I dip in for a few months.

OSRS is the only one with a future. RS3 is an absolute mess, especially after Jagex found out that removing pay to win lootboxes doesn't magically make the game popular.

Quests are the way to go.
Not really related to progression, but a lot of weapon types aren't worth using. It's better than it was in the past, but iirc battleaxes, warhammers, longswords and two-handed swords are lower DPS than your fists against most enemies up until Mithril.

you could use that time to play multiple games instead of a single MMO

Great take. Can you get near-maximum enjoyment without relying on other players?

Yeah you can its extremely soloable, its mostly designed as a solo game. Even as an endgame player you can completely ignore group content if you so choose. In fact I would say there is only one endgame raid (Theatre of Blood) and one endgame boss (Nex) that isnt solo viable but everything else in the game is, theres some minigames you run in mass worlds but you arent really interacting with other players there.

The really nice thing about osrs is content stays relevant, if you dont like whats been recently released its just as viable to do old content. You can also play an Ironman and ignore the in game economy completely, which basically mandates you to do all PVM in the game released since launch to some degree, but thats another tier of autism.

I think runescape is very good and perfect if you just want a life eating game but like another anon said runescape makes time go by so fast it can be scary. I barely remember COVID because I just played osrs 6-8 hours a day every day.

So I actually would recommend you not play osrs because its too good.
