not op but imo 2e dnd is just better. the to hit rate is essentially fixed by level so the encounters cant be won by simply autoattacking with high bonuses. even spamming buffs isnt really enough on its own. also there is no hp bloat

2e spells are more complex and enemy saves are stronger

also the controls are simply more responsive and readable. all the 3d games are a fucking mess

To me it just feels really well paced. I played a lot of the other IE games when I was younger but only got to IWD1 recently, and I don't think I ever got bored or fed up with any single area. The moment I I started feeling done it was usually over, and the little interactions and stories in each area kept it interesting.
Also agreed about the visuals and sound, just a really cozy experience all around.

I'm also a 2E appreciator. After having played a bunch of buildfag games in a row it was really nice to just be able to make my party and go. I find it much more fun focusing on solving individual encounters with what I have at hand rather than worrying about build planning.

the funnest thing about IE games is creating a party of bad asses and levelling them up, and IWD just lets you do this, with just enough story to make the sequence of fights feel like an adventure.

What mods does BG have other than SCS and the NWN conversion? I'm trying to find more content to add but there is hardly anything. Last time I checked out Lava's mods, but he is so heavy handed with the leftist stuff. His Fyalvara mod is about avenging her FTM 'brother' and there's a twist that the villain was actually more supportive of 'his' transition, while Fyalvara blames herself for not noticing and using the dead name.

I do not tend to buy games that are old enough that the company that made them no longer exists or if they do, the people who made them long left...
But i will say i have made exceptions in the past on Steam on super deep discounts solely to train the steam algorithm to know what i like and it works well.

Would you (or anyone else) like to provide insight on what a 'balanced' stat total would be in an Infinity Engine game? What's fair to you? Because obviously DnD 2e has far different scaling issues than a system with pre-made point buys or standard arrays (3e and onwards)

I'd love a mode where you get a single roll of stats before you even choose a race or class, and then are forced to go from there and pick 'builds' to fit the stats instead of the other way around. That's how I played DnD as a kid before 3e was released.
The only issue is that people would do the same thing as the current stat roller and reset a hundred times. As long as the player has any choice to reroll for 90s+, many will opt to do so. Kinda like how people sit and spam reforge on Terraria for BiS prefixes.

I think re-rolling stats is ok, but moving points between rolls is where it becomes munchkin. So you roll six sets of 3d6 and then assign them to STR, DEX, CON, WIS, INT, and CHA as you see fit, but you can't add and subtract between the 3d6s.

1 pure cleric (essential for heals/buffs and TU)
1 dual-class fighter 1 or 3 to mage (dual classing is humans only)
1 thief or fighter/thief multiclass
1 more martial of your choice
the last slot is anything you personally want, I would recommend a bard, there is a [high level] song that gives strong regen and +2AC and having some extra buffing/CC/summoning spell slots is also nice, the song will be available around start of chapter 3 or something

- make martials specialize in different weapons, say one is axes one is swords
- at levels 1-2 ignore 2H melee weapons, everyone who can carry a tower shield gets a tower shield
- don't waste spellslots on direct damage spells before casters are lvl 5 at the very least, unless you really need fire/acid to deal with trolls of course

Btw in 2E, high WIS is only really necessary for divine casters, like cleric, druid, paladin. Your Bard needs high INT because he gets access to select arcane spells. Everyone benefits from high DEX.
