>"You NEED to play Elden ring! Its the best rpg fo all time!"
>start playing it
>Watch incomprehensible opening lore cutscene that doesnt make me feel interested in the games story at all
>keep playing anyways despite lack of any motivation in seeing the story unfold in a literal rpg game
>combat is boring and not even challenging
>walk through the most boring and bland open world ive ever seen in any open-world rpg
>had zero interest in exploring anything because of how uninteresting it all was
>reach first boss but online guides say im under-leveled so i have to spend an hour grinding by killing the same soldiers over and over
>fight first boss, was boring and not that challenging
>realize i dont have to play this shit
Why does anyone actually like this game?
>>

>"You NEED to play Elden ring!"
No, I don't. I'd maybe consider picking it up on sale for $20.

Dear diary
>>

Fromslop is designed to make people who don't actually play videogames feel like hardcore gamers.

That is 99% of the reason anyone plays it.
Extremely simplistic combat, lore and world is completely ignorable, the difficulty is completely laughable if you use 90% of the game's systems.

Why do you think Sekiro was MUCH, MUCH less popular than the rest of the Souls series? Because you couldn't bruteforce shit in that one so shitters actually got filtered and hated it, despite it being a game with much coherent mechanics, world, progression, etc.
>>
>>3972092
>Why do you think Sekiro was MUCH, MUCH less popular than the rest of the Souls series?
For me, it was because it was action adventure instead of action RPG. No customizable character.
>>

This.
>>
>>3972052
I didn't read your retarded drivel. This is an rpg board for rpgs, which action games are not.

>lack of any motivation in seeing the story unfold in a literal rpg game
the tabletop games that inspired video role playing games had no story beyond "there's a dungeon full of loot. kill dudes, steal treasure, have fun"
elden ring is closer to the source than the interactive fiction/visual novels you masturbate to
>>3972092
>people only pretend to like it! that's the only explanation for so many people liking something I don't!
autism
>>
>>3972480
The groups that just ran dungeons where all the players did was collect loot were called munchkins for a reason. The real joy of the genre comes from the crazy shit that evolves naturally from players doing things the DM didn't expect. Not that any of these games actually feel like playing a campaign, but the fromsoft approach is painfully bland.
>>
>>3972052
>magic is literally just throwing blue pebbles a few meters away
Yeah, no, hard pass from me.
I think the Zoomers raved about it when the bandwagon was going just because they'd never heard any actual dialogue in a video game before. "Thee" and "thou" and "thy" is le heckin' skibidi ultra-epic prose for them. Which is hilarious because the game's world is literally Ohio.
>>
>>3972480
Wrong.
>>3972484
Correct.
>>
This board is so pitiful
>>
>>3972542
No anon you don't understand, everything is actually very easy and I am amazing and have the greatest most refined taste ever. You're just some pleb with shit taste who is actually very bad at videogames.
>>
>>3972110
This and also no online. Online play is a huge draw of the Souls games whether you like it or not.
>>
>>3972542
The nature of this site attracts homosexuals. It's basically a virtual gloryhole where they "trigger" each other into having slapfights by posting "bait."

It's ok if you like sucking dicks, anon, no one cares. You're free to just do stuff. You can do stuff if you want to. No one cares. Go suck your dicks, anon.

>the tabletop games that inspired video role playing games had no story beyond "there's a dungeon full of loot. kill dudes, steal treasure, have fun"
This is bullshit because even the most beer & pretzels sorts of games out there still have tangible, relatable goals involving materialist pursuits of wealth and power. Elden Ring, by contrast, doesn't even give you anything to really work towards, save for the vague promise of becoming the lord of a land consisting primarily of shambling zombies and monsters, and yet that goal is somehow even less esoteric than whatever the fuck Goldmask or Dung Eater has planned for the Lands Between. What the fuck do they actually want, or better yet: Who even cares? The game will NEVER elaborate or give you any context as to whatever or whoever you're fighting for happens to be in your protag's best interests or not, it may as well be an arbitrary choice you decide upon at a complete whim.

Why the fuck are you using guides for your first playthrough? It's a fag move to use them period but using them instead of just playing the game is the dumbest fucking thing, just completely ruining your ability to enjoy and experience the game for yourself. This is why you're not having fun.

>I mindlessly grinded for an hour before I fought the boss and then it wasn't challenging
People this stupid should be sterilized.

god forbid someone expect a role-playing game to have a good narrative, like it isnt the core of any rpg.

elden ring is beautiful, but the gameplay doesn't please me much. i fire it up when i need visual inspo more than a gameplay itch to scratch

ngl I played without spirit ashes for so long I forgot Fromsoft included that retarded easy modo shit for no reason. Well, I could see it being warranted for a few bosses, but it still sucks imo

its fun and i can use a rusty anchor as a weapon

It'd be cool if Fromsoft tried to make an actual story for once
Or give me a single fucking town to talk to people in.
Or just stop reiterating the same formula
>>
>>3974219
How about you play any of those other games that have what you yearn for?

What is it with these dumb kids..
>>
>>3974246
I do. That doesn't stop me from wanting King's Field V.
Or a new Tenchu.
>>
>>3974219
>Or give me a single fucking town to talk to people in.
Do people actually care about this? Every RPG with towns I only talk to a shop if I need to buy something and quest related NPCs. I've never stopped to talk to a random NPC ever. That's the entire point of a souls game, you just focus on gameplay. Other devs make the game you want, Fromsoft doesn't.

Games were finished after the 90s, Nintendo 64 and it's games ended videogames. Everything after that was redundant and repetitive, specially in relation to open world games.

Trolls within trolls. But yes. I agree. Elden Ring is bland. DS3 with a jump button and an open world is something I really don't like to play.

the series peaked and ended in my mind with ds2. anything afterwards doesn't exist

I like the gameplay in Elden Ring, but the stupid "story" and lack of a quest log destroyed it for me.

Everything started to feel empty and pointless to me after 50 or 60 hours and then I just stopped playing.
>>
>>3972052
As a GothicGOD who could barely finish Witcher 3 and who hates Basedowind, I can tell that this would be my Elden Ring experience if I ever tried it.

I played one of the Dark Souls games, maybe the second one, and I uninstalled it because of the outrageous subhuman controls that are an insult to anyone who has the smallest experience in HEMA.

>"You see, European knight san is super slow and stupid! He just moves around in slow motion even if he's just a naked zombie with a big shield! That's why we in Nippon never used handheld shields! Definitely not because we were pussies who did everything to avoid fighting mano-a-mano!"

All the "Souls" games (incl the spin offs like Bloodborne and Elden Ring) are enjoyed exclusively by:
a) NPCs ("people" with no inner voice/sub 90% on N in MBTI)
b) zoomers
>>
>>3972961
Dude, just watch some lore videos if you're a complete brainlet or too lazy to piece everything together, it's not the game's fault.
>>
>>3972052
DeS, DS and DS2original version are the only good rollslop games
>>
>>3983760
No matter what souls (or any type of same games/series) you play first, the enthusiasm for them diminishes eventually.
>>
>>3972052
You must be a Witcher 3 fan. I have a theory that it’s not possible to enjoy both.
>>
>>3983735
lol you people can’t even pretend to hide that your hatred of JRPGs is racially motivated
>>
>>3984296
Not her, but Dark Souls and its successors is not a JRPG.
>in before this midwit tries to argue that JRPG means any "RPG" made in Japan
These games are action games with minor roleplaying elements, the same degree of roleplaying elements like every other FPS these days has.
>>
>>3983697
peaked with the worst entry?
>>
>>3984287
Not him, but your theory is wrong. I beat Witcher 3 and liked it. I also beat Elden Ring and liked it. It's possible to like both.

it came out durring the pandemic so normies who never played a time consuming game before got into it.

its fun, simple as that
however i will concede that people who praise the story and storytelling are complete dishonest retards
also, from a technological standpoint, like the engine, optimization, and quality of physics and such, it is undeniable trash tier
everything else is pretty decent
>>

They are absolutely RPGS. They just emphasis a different aspect of RPGs (adventuring) while western made games emphasize the social aspects (characters that stand around talking about their feelings or political opinions). And they are Japanese games so they are JRPGs.
>>
>>3972480
>the tabletop games that inspired video role playing games had no story beyond "there's a dungeon full of loot. kill dudes, steal treasure, have fun"
That's just original D&D when gold was both currency and experience. It really was just "group goes dungeon delving, group has to get all the loot out at the end" kind of setup.
>>
>>3985273
>"RPG definition : room temperature IQ {Celsius} edition"
Games like Septerra Core and Anachronox are more RPG and more JRPG than any game in this series will ever be. And neither "adventuring" nor "characters standing around talking about their feelings or political opinions" are RPG elements. A pure roleplaying game - whether it's a video game or not - can have no talking whatsoever and no adventuring whatsoever. Simple kill-shot example:
>A roleplaying game where the player character is a stationary robotic defense system.

Meanwhile, by your "standards", every Resident Evil game, including the original trilogy, is a JRPG. Super Mario Bros? I'm roleplaying a plumber on an adventure to save the princess. Is this even a hyperbole? Hardly, a player's zombie dodging skills in RE will make them far more successful in their "JRPG" adventure in Elden Souls than any engagement with the minor roleplaying elements ever could.
>>
>>3985630
I didn’t say Elden Ring is an RPG because you “roleplay” as a tarnished. You know exactly what I mean. You’re sperging out because it makes you and western game developers feel insecure about playing and making games that focus on the socializing aspect of RPGs because that’s just lame while there’s something sublime about a game like Dark Souls.
>>
>>3974278
Majula, even as half-baked as it is, is loved for a reason.
A hub area that actually grows and expands with the player's efforts and includes people that have at least a bit of responsiveness. Not perfect, but there's an attempt made.
Compare that to Elden Ring which starts off with a fairly empty hub, and then kills or warps away basically everyone in it by the mid-game so the only thing you have to go there for is upgrading tools.
>>
>>3985679
>You know exactly what I mean
No I don't, I am an *NT* individual, not an *S* husk whose thoughts are fed to it through the hivemind.
>You’re sperging out because it makes you and western game developers feel insecure
"Mentally ill"-tier projection.
>>
>>3985832
You straw manned me. I said From focuses on the adventuring aspect of RPGs. You know what I mean by that if you have any familiarity with the genre. I didn’t say their games are technically RPGs because you roleplay as an adventurer. Those are the kind of pedantic arguments you DnD virgins get into.

True. Too many call it an amazing game, but due to its technical incompetence, I can't rate it more than 8/10. If people cry about how shit games run or how optimization is dead, Elden Ring absolutely deserves to be criticized here, even if the other aspects are good. Game of the year? Yeah sure. Game of the generation? You fucking wish. Among the greats of the medium? Take your meds.
