Let's have a thread about humble mid games that still might hold a good reason to try them out.

Picrel is Vampyr
The combat and autoleveling is very unsatisfying, there is basically no exploration, the VA is OK at best
BUT it is one of the few vampire games that made me feel like I'm actually murdering people to sustain myself
... that doesn't sound right let me try again

in other vampire games you are never a monster, you are either doing something for the "greater good" and everything is justified, or you aren't even killing anyone because you don't drain them like in VTM games

Here it's different.
Draining NPCs is the prime source of XP, and the more you know about an NPC the more XP you get
Also the music that starts when you are leading your next victim is tense as fuck

The second King's Field game.
>>

Skyrim is pretty fun for slop
>>
Most indie RPGs, I'm talking real indie, like the $2 ones.

i've been playing the shit out of Cthulu Saves the World, Cosmic Star Heroine, and What Madness Lies Beneath. There's something about a $2 price point that turns any game which actually functions into a masterpiece.
>>
>>3977768
I liked what I played of Vampyr, but the ESL writing pissed me off. I wish someone competent had been able to review the English script so it didn't feel like so disjointed.

I also liked Mars: War Logs, but haven't finished that one either.
>>
I have fond memories of playing Fallout 4, even though it didn't live up to the hype.

>BUT it is one of the few vampire games that made me feel like I'm actually murdering people to sustain myself
Eh, kinda. You can play through the game by not draining any story NPCs on the hard difficulty, and only be somewhat annoyed by bosses. Game is basically too easy so "do I drain or not?" is never a real dilemma. I was more annoyed by respawning, level-scaled enemies in a game that sends you all over the place without any form of fast travel, but thankfully you yourself decide when to rest aka allocate experience, because that's when enemies respawn. It's a solid 6/10.
>>
>>3978006
>not draining anyone
a lot of steam reviews I've seen complained you don't get enough XP for quests and mobs
but yeah it can be done, and that makes the decision to embrace an NPC all that more meaningful
>did you REALLY need that XP or could you press on without it?
I mostly do it for the cool soundtrack though that blasts as you drain someone
>>

not really familiar with KF series
played one and liked it, but the numbering is confusing as it is always with chink games so I don't know which I played
care to elaborate why KF2 specifically?
what makes it mid?
what makes it worth playing anyway?
>>
>>3978065
>>3978006
I started the game trying to do a full genocide run, then felt bad about it after I killed the second district and did a full pacficist run instead
The game has the same problem as many action RPGs in the same vein, you do little damage but get oneshot. The last boss was annoying as fuck on hard

INSOMNIA: The Ark

Janky as fuck third person RPG inspired by classic Fallout set in a dystopian dieselpunk space station adrift in space for 400 years. There's character classes, melee combat, shields, firearms, crafting, lite hunger/thirst elements and a cool setting you can't ever feel like you quite understand both because the characters in-universe are weirdos talking in depressed riddles and because the devs were Russian and so the translation might be finnicky here and there.

>>
>>3978092
That game is the shit. I think there was an attempt to patch it at some point.
>>
Shroud of the Avatar. I wanted an Ultima game and this is about all I'm gonna get. the MMO is dead but its still got a 40 hour single player campaign in there
>>

>>

care to include something the games do well enough to endure the midness?
>>
>>3978330
I wouldn't say INSOMNIA is mid, it comes across like a AA game from 2010. Like Alpha Protocol but set in a bunch of Russian tunnels. Buggy but with a solid TPS foundation and an incredibly compelling and lore-heavy setting. If you like exploring the environment in the likes of Metro, or Black Isle Fallout, or the subterranean labs in Stalker you probably know the vibe this game goes for.

>PROs
what you said, basically; game is considerably harder to play w/o killing anyone that's not directly hostile towards you (so innocents?) yet afaik it's one of the requirements for the best ending
excellent VAs overall
using hypnosis on people to take their meds was never not funny
has a few funny moments to cheer things up like learning lord redgrave is not powerful at all
>CONS
violently boring main story, I don't remember anything besides the cringe family reveal
non-intuitive side quests, easy to miss items required to advance people's plot-lines like the knife for miss Cox or the Scarf for the Romanian prostitute
>so-so
lots of trash "have you noticed I am brown?" characters
don't visit the blind guy after you cure his blindness

what I remember is your mom asking you to stop staring at her with glassy eyes if you played evil, and people's reactions if you make Not!Trump and Not!Vance into vampires

I really liked Days Gone.

I know reviewers were't very kind to it but the absolute worst things I can say about it is that the pacing sorta sucks at times. Other than that
>combat
great
>exploration
fine or even fun, spooky at times
>story
good, added fun by the protagonist being an angry shizo
>graphics
good, great at times
>>
>>3977768
I found the graphics absolutely gorgeous. The voice actors were pretty good, I thought. The dialogue / script / writing was generally good, but sometimes there was something notably meh.
But yes, the actual combat and leveling and everything else was fucking awful. I'm fully prepared to say it was the worst combat gameplay I've ever seen in any game ever, and I've been playing games since the fucking '80s.
If you pirate it, maybe it could be an inspirational five minutes before you give it up, but definitely do not buy it at any price.
>>
>>3979203
Probably the best example of someone actually talking to themselves because it's all just train of thought mumbling under ones breath or a one sided conversation instead of talking at the player for the players convenience.
It goes away as the game goes on and he mellows out but I highly enjoyed how much a fucking lunatic Deacon was earlier in the game and how angry he got during fights.

OP here
the game caught me by surprise
it's pretty woke so I was assuming I had to be playing goody two shoes for the best outcome so the game doesn't make me deal with hostile neighborhoods (basically you have to do a bunch of busywork to bring a neighborhood back to safe levels)

Well it turned out choosing the harsh decision would probably be a better outcome than what I got!
>>
The Penny Arcade games made way back in the day. First 2 episodes play like Mario RPG, other 2 play like FF5.

I never see anyone talk about this game. I started it recently and have been really pleasantly surprised, it's just really solid in pretty much every regard (except the story, which seems pretty generic so far).
>>
>>3984285
Because it was entirely overshadowed by MGS5 which released around the same time.
>>
>>3984285
Because it's a shitty Ubislop-tier open world
>>
>>3977768
>incompetent devs ruin a potential decent game
Many such cases
>>
>>3979203
>>3984285
is it an RPG though?
>>
>>3977768
Black Geyser is one of the most mediocre CRPGs I've ever played, but I still enjoy it for some reason. If I had to write a list of 20 things about it, at least 15 of them would be negative.
Looking back, I think it might be because it tries to do some interesting things and it was obviously made with some passion, but it does all of those things terribly and the end result is shit.

Either way, if you haven't played this game, you shouldn't bother.
>>
>>3984803
Why is it bad? I think I have it on a wishlist.
>>
>>3977768
When I was a kid, I poured hours into the Guardians of Ga'hoole tie in game for the Wii. It had this really fun flying mechanic. I have never found another game that replicates just how solid the flying felt. I would barely even play the game as intended, I would just fly for hours.
>>
>>3982638
What's woke about it? Because that wasn't what I saw at all. At all.
>>
>>3984854
Anon pls, it's a fucking Dontnod game. I adore Vampyr but it has modern demographics in 1918 London
>>
>>3984805
>long loading times, even on an SSD (devs at least seemed to realise this, and added a "teleport to NPC" button on your quest journal, which takes you back to the quest-giver without having to pass multiple loading screens)
>greed mechanic is interesting, but it's severely undermined by the sheer amount of gold available in the game (the idea is that you can reject quest rewards to lower world greed, but the game throws so much gold at you that it's meaningless - i rejected >95% of all quest rewards and I was still swimming in gold by the end of the game, which goes against the entire theme of the game)
>inventory system is a fucking mess, good luck dealing with that
>companions are skeletons - some of them do have voiced lines and a token quest or two, but most of them have very little flavour or personality
>very little in the way of actual roleplay, i.e. you're extremely railroaded in your decisions most of the time and there's no actual choice involved in what to do
I was amazed that it got a DLC and a prequel based on how few people played it.
>>
>>3978709
whats the issue? the thread is about MID games and that game perfectly fits the description. why you so upset this game has a couple fans?
>>
>>3984906
I don't even remember seeing any black people. But weren't Indians common in London at the time since it was right on the end of the Victorian / imperialist era? "Modern demographics" is not just whenever you see a non-white person.

Congratulations. Again, I love the game, but why are you discussing shit that you have clearly no interest in? Like, why pretend a game isn't woke when you clearly don't pay attention?
First vendor in the game btw

Not him. It's crazy how little research people do. Pretty easy to get a quick summary if you don't remember. Still liked the game either way.
>>
>>3984954
>weren't Indians common in London
>Victorian era
No, non-Whites were not at all common in London until Britain lost WW2.
>>
>>3984854
it's woman's rights and you are stereotyping muh immigrants and lower classes are people too
all of which are actually pretty period-relevant so I wouldn't mind but also done in a very sloppy 21st century point of view (IMO)
>>
>>3984935
the issue is that just the previous post up the chain has anon high on copium that insomnia isn't a mid game
>>

>Victorian era
get the fuck out of here you dimwit
>>
>>3985008
I understand that reading things is difficult for you, but the quoted post said that Indians were common in London in 1918 as it was "right on the end of the Victorian / imperialist era".
>>
Hell is us
The combat is fine however the enemies are very easy to deal with there aren't any bosses and not much enemy variety
The setting is kino makes me feel like I'm playing an SCP game, the little side stories/quests are cool to do and it's nice getting resolutions for each of them I just love the level design and the game doesn't shy away from the bad things that happen during an apocalypse and people are either trying to survive or establish cult villages
I also liked the puzzles and exploration which are much better than the combat

NWN2 is better than NWN1 and I'll die on that hill. The only thing NWN1 has over the sequel is that the toolkit was a bit easier to use. Not even better, just easier.

>>3988824
The rapey dialogue is not likely to pop up if you flirt with him or encourage him. Basically, if you don't call him out on his flirting, it's framed as him just being vulgar and horny. It's only when you tell him to shut up that characters like Neeshka attempt to characterize his suggestions as more than just blatant invitation, but aggressive demands.
So he's problematic... if you don't find him attractive. Which is literally exactly how women interact with men.
