What are some good monsters for the early game in XIII-2? I also heard you can unlock some of the OG XIII cast. Is that a post-game thing or can you get them earlier? The game is pretty fun so far and lets you engage in combat system much earlier than XIII.

I think everyone usually defaults to chocobos.Blue Chocobo is considered the best RAV, at least. There's an albino Behemoth that was the best COM, but that's fairly later in the game. I think you only get other human characters through DLC.
