I just finished, if we count rogue MD stuff, Shiren the Wanderer on SFC, the main 30 floor dungeon. The side stuff looks interesting to me but I can do that another time. Great game. I was playing Siralim Ultimate today for like 9 hours and it's cool, but I've been having a braindead spam murder of crows strat with like one attacking monster for single target for about half of that. Hand's a bit sore from lazily mashing the E key. I'm trying to figure out what I want to play next. I could jump into another Wizardry game, I could jump into some old PC stuff like Zeliard or maybe just something more traditional, idk. Almost too many choices, ya know? I really wanna play Dragon Quest IX but I'm a little worried I'm missing out without at least one friend to go through it with.
>>
>>3988574
i'm playing persona 5 royal for like the 10th time, but i've modded the current playthrough. some of the unused skills and traits seemed interesting, so i'm trying them out to see if they would fit in well or feel out of place. i've added back in social link/confidant skill acquisitions for (most) party members, as in persona 4 golden as well, although akechi's seems impossible unfortunately.
i've spent weeks planning this out, theorycrafting it, testing the unused skills and traits to see if they work properly (they do), and balancing it. i got so tired of it and replaying the same dungeons over and over again, i needed a break to try to approach it not as if i was testing it, but as if i was trying to have fun with it as a new run.
it's working so far and it's different enough, yet familiar enough. i'm quite happy with it so far. i still need to see if sumire joining the party early fucks with everything or not.

Just finished up a DQ8 playthrough, struggling to figure out what next. DQ8 remains fucking stellar, even if it's easy. Shin Megami Tensei on the super nintendo and I gotta say even in 2026 im having a great time with this game sure, its not the hardest game with how broken it can be but the atmosphere, and music really do a lot of the heavy lifting and find and recruiting new demons is really addictive honestly I kind of wish they kept some of the mechanics from this game like the fact that demons don't level up so the only way to get stronger allies is to fuse them which means you have to be constantly recruiting demons to make sure you have stock to fuse and stronger members of your party it would fix a lot of the issues 5 introduces with allowing you to really power up your demons allowing you to take some pretty low tier demons all the way to the endgame which im not nesscarily the biggest fan of you can still technically do that but you are going to be at a real disadvantage

shmups mostly. i think ive been frustrated with how slowly most RPGs take to get to the fun part. my favourites are things like etrian odyssey or kaga fire emblem but theyre never getting new entries.
>>
>>3998623
>shmups
Name a couple. I don't think I've ever touched the genre.
>how slowly most RPGs take to get to the fun part
True. Morrowind only starts being fun once you hit the like 40 hour mark.
>etrian odyssey or kaga fire emblem
What's the gameplay style of them?
>>
>>3998643
i got into the genre through zeroranger which i think is a great starting point. other ones i like are blue revolver, ikaruga, devil blade reboot, graze counter gm, and layer section. i also started getting through metal slug recently which i feel run and guns are basically just shmups anyway.

morrowind is great its probably the last rpg i got really into (only played for the first time last year). but yes i think the first 40 hours before i became a crazy kill god was from the roleplay/imagination part not because the games are actually fun.

etrian is just a very snappy very thoughtful turn based jrpg. i like all the party building and planning and then learning the enemy patterns and executing, it kind of feels like monster hunter but as a jrpg. fire emblem are strategy rpgs which play a lot faster than fft/tactics ogre/disgaea which ive found kind of too boring and slow. they have a lot of interesting depth in how you use unit types/the importance of position/etc which i find fun and challenging.

DQ8 and Lightning returns, Ive been playing both series in release order on and off for 3 years or so. Like the 8 cast so far but kind of regretting the 3ds version, no random encounters keeps leaving me way underlevelled. Too early in LR to tell, I liked the combat in XIII-2 but the story was laughable so if its more of the same it should be enjoyable

>>
Secret of Mana, I'm at the tree palace. It's ok. The story puts me to sleep, the MC is bland and hasn't said anything intelligent so far, and the second half of the game feels rushed.
With that said, the graphics and music are amazing.

I've decided I'm going to play every RPG in existence, at least that's how it feels. Trying to get through the trails series and I'm in zero right now. I'm triple welding some games so I don't get burnt out. So to go along with that I'm also playing Dragon Quest Builders 1 and Monster Hunter stories 1.

So after I burn through those at least the non Trails one, I intend to play through DQ 1 and 2 remake followed by Tales of Graces f remaster. Then after those get into the octopath and live a live games

Pic related.
Currently stuck as a Mage, there is a room with two poison druids and I can't find a way to kill them without dying to that fucking poison afterward.
Normally I would just pepper them from afar with Acid Cloud, but here they start directly in melee range and keep meleing unlike most casters - and acid cloud has an AoE so if I use magic I kill myself first. If I go full buff (Shield, Shield+, Strength+) and blow through a few health potion I can stab them to death, but then the poison take forever to dissipate and I die even if burn through the entire staff of potion accumulated since the beginning of the game.
They are the last enemies alive on that map and while I *could* just be a coward and run through the room without killing them, it would feel really bad to leave with unclaimed kill XP.

Checked the wiki and as a Mage is seems like there are no secret spell I could cast that heal or remove poison.
The "Berserk" spell does jackshit, they don't attack each other.
Burned through all my non-identified consumables in case one was a scroll/potion of cure poison or a 5sec god mode, but no luck.
The one forum for this game is so dead it's only on the wayback archive. The wiki is barebone. No idea how I can win that encounter.

>What version and settings are you using?
Dos with DosBox-X, because the game really need savestates.
Not because it's hard, because the maps take a long-ass time to explore and the game only let you save in town. The demo let you exit&save whenever, which was much better.
If you want to do it without that, the Exodos version work out of the box perfectly, mouselook included.

>Would you say the game is generally unbalanced
It's my first play-through, and I didn't pick the class everyone praise on that old forum (warlock), so my opinion on it is probably not that valuable.
>magic has a HUGE failure percentage. Even has a mage. Even with rerolling stat growth on level up to get max-ish Magic stats.
>magic has a TERRIBLE regen rate. Even has a mage (+200% mana regen). This would be fine if killing an average enemy didn't take roughly a full mana bar.
Playing the game is 1 minute exploring, 10sec fighting, 5 minutes alt-tabbing, 10sec fighting to kill the other mob, back to 5 minutes alt-tabbing.
In the demo I picked knight (full melee class) and had a much better time, if a bit boring. Wanting to use the magic system and do something that swing a sword all the time might have been the secret masochist option.
Warlock is a gimped mage that can still fight in melee decently, guess that's why it's "meta".
From what I tried the entire third of all classes that are rogue-based are pointless, as rogue stuff doesn't do shit in practice so they trade away power for nothing.

>is it just this one encounter that's screwing you?
Just that one. Most other "hard" encounters where just a matter of patience and peak-a-boo.
Ended winning it by giving the Berserk spell a second try on a hunch, I *think* it's not a classic "attack any target even ally" debuff, but a "activate KHORNE mode and only use melee" one. Blasted the two druids with it and then stabbed them to death, which ended with half the amount of poison stack and was survivable. Or maybe it was just luck.

I feel that Noctis was supposed to be like DMC4 Dante where you can swap between multiple weapons on the fly to take advantage of weapon type weakness and use various moves against various foes.

but due to the complete and utter lack of difficulty, he's just a guy who smacks everything with one weapon type and can use items at 0 HP

which is completely fair, the story barely makes sense having played the first two games, playing it alone would feel awful, but the first two have so many issues themselves you cant recommend them. Reporting back in, finished Lufia 1 and Mother 1 and realized I had one the "bad" translations of chaos world (non-chronix) so shelved that one a bit.

I've started and finished Xenogears, and started Lagrange Point, Trials Mana, Exacaliburian and Emerald Dragon since then. I'm also picking away at my Crystal Project endgame save from a few years ago.

Probably going shelve trials of Mana for a bit till I knock the other games out. Then maybe do all of dragon quest mainlines, I've only finished XI S but close to finished 7 and 8 years back.

I'm having trouble deciding what DQ versions to use. I find emulating DS is garbage. Also just playing DS RPGs on hardware felt like a chore. I don't know why people recommend DS, desu.

I'm playing Arcanum and Chrono Trigger. Switching between the two of them randomly to have a bit of variety.

I might just keep this scheme going. Playing a CRPG and a JRPG in parallel.

Maybe I'll even add a third leg to this strategy. What's another sub-genre of RPG to add to this scheme to fill a different gameplay niche?
>>
>>3988574
Final Fantasy XIII-2, my main motivation for continuing playing it is seeing the stories of the old party members through. I like the Paradigm shift system but random encounters in areas which are unavoidable can make it fatiguing at times, as you go from fight to fight blasting through enemies switching paradigms two or three times only per battle. The inclusion of a monster tamer system to make up for only having Noelle and Serah is interesting but the wide breath of options and limited upgrade resources make me weary of investing in newly acquired monsters. Other than that the maps are pretty, the overall plot is interesting, the music is phenomenal and exploration rewarding.

Depends. What did you primarily dislike about Undertale? Gameplay wise they're not really comparable at all; Look Outside's more of a standard turn based jarpig with a comparitively larger emphasis on resource management, and it's not like the game expects you (or even allows you) to spare every hostile force you meet outside of running past them. It's difficult to make comments on the tone of the story/world since there's more than a few contentious part of it in Undertale that detractors bring up. At a bare minimum, I'd say that LO isn't anywhere near as bleak of a setting as Lisa is nor is it as reliant on dark humour, but I also wouldn't call it as lighthearted as UT's pacifist/neutral route in totality (a few sections of the game definitely feel like they could be slotted in there though).

If you're still somewhat curious, you can give the itch.io demo a try before you think about purchasing the main game.
