Will this ever get a spiritual successor?

I'm not talking about the plot or even general aesthetic of it. But how the game is built. Combat is maybe mediocre, but how it handles the world design, not open world but certain hand crafted "cells" you can travel to.

I'm not sure you really can. It was sort of a compromise between a CRPG and a modern (at the time) Bioware RPG. Taste has already moved back to CRPGs, which I guess partly we have this to thank for that. But it's just too simple of a design to really work in today's market. There's a desire for Mass Effect clones, so we'll get a few of those I think, but people that might actually play this want something more, and Larian and Owlcat currently have that locked down for the mainstream. I think there's been one or 2 indie attempts, but I know at least one of them just never made it to completion.

did you play the spiritual precursor, bitch nigga?

The 2nd Greedfall game was advertised heavily in their community at least, as a spiritual successor to DA1. I was thinking about getting it, but didn't care for the first Greedfall so I never bothered. It's a shame that it flopped, because I really want another Dragon Age 1, Drakensang 1/2, Neverwinter Nights 2 style late 2000s era CRPG again.

I've been into CRPGs since the mid 90s (Fallout, BG1) and of all the eras and all the styles, I loved DA1 the best. Like was said here already, it struck a really nice medium between story-heavy choice/consequence and approachable but crunchy RTWP combat. Unfortunately, RTWP is mostly dead and Larian has brought back the classic turn-based CRPGs of the early to mid 90s.

I think eventually the taste will cycle back around again to NWN2/DA1/Drakensang etc again, but it won't be any time soon. I imagine some time in the late 2030s some gen Alpha kids will get old and decrepit and whine about how good games were when they were born and they missed out on them, and some indie dev in east jafuckistan will basically do a soft reboot of DA Origins and that'll kick it off the way Larian did with turnbased CRPGs and Div:OS.

So you want a game with hub worlds?
Motherfucker, play Arcanum or phantasy star or something
>>
Threadly reminder that Thedas stands for THE Dragon Age Setting.

Arcanum is old and not from a setting I care about. I actually would like Skyrim/FNV style of gameplay but not open world.

>I actually would like Skyrim/FNV style of gameplay but not open world
So you want an open world game but not open world?
Have you played Half-Life 1?

When I say "gameplay" here I am talking more about combat and how skills, perks and dialogues work and so on. Not game world design. That would need to have highly detailed and realistic (but with fantasy elements if it's a fantasy setting) environments.

Deus Ex or VTMB are your only choices. Because you sound like you sure as hell won't play Way of the Samurai, cause it has a KFC Crusader living under a bridge

BG3 unironically feels like what Dragon Age would have become if BioWare/EA weren't so utterly fucked as a company. Unless you specifically want RTwP that feels more modern and less like the IE games which would also rule out Pillars of Eternity.
>>

BG3 has very complex mechanics compared to DAO, DAO had only 3 classes and the gameplay was just spamming cooldowns while you auto-attack. The whole point of BioWare making Dragon Age was to offer a streamlined CRPG experience in order to reach a broader audience (esp the console players). I'm not sure if the people nostalgic for DAO would really appreciate BG3.

Surely dao prepped newbies for BG

But as I understand it, Bioware's goal was to get their own IP and be free of DnD owners. BG2 wasn't more complex than dao.
