I chose her ending for a reason. after all "What is done out of love always takes place beyond good and evil."

>>3995016>she is though. she's selfish. she does what she wants for herself. that's textbook villainIts funny that what you see as selfishness I see as self determination, it was planned for ranni to be the next puppet of the greater will, entirely out of her control. She murdered her half brother just to escape that fate, i can't really blame her when i would have done something similarly drastic if my choices where that or being dragged from my current life to be the next fucking marika
>>3995048>Its funny that what you see as selfishness I see as self determinationbecause it is one and the same. in the end, it's all about ego. but look at her from a wider perspective. her actions have brought upon so much suffering. is it all her fault? definitely not. did she know all of that would happen? of course not. but those things still happened. and she did all that for herself. not for the betterment of others. solely for herself. from a traditional point of view, she is evil. she doesn't even seem particularly guilty about it either. she's the complete opposite of the goody two shoes hero who sacrifices himself for The Greater Good^TM. you can see what I mean right?aside from that, I think you're empathizing with her too much. you see her actions as good because you yourself would've done so. which is not a bad thing, but it does bias your perception.

Malenia strikes me as the kind of person who would sacrifice herself for Miquella. they could've done the thing they did to Godwin on her in exchange for Radhan protecting Miquella or something, to remove all Empyreans and guaranteeing Miquella's ascension. or some other thing I'm not smart even to figure out. they've got magick, there could be other answers.>>3995084yeah she's not pure evil like the frenzy flame. at best she's morally grey, but to have grey, you gotta have some black somewhere.>>3995433but I do. it's why I picked her ending. it's why I quoted Nietzsche

>>3995073>A man’s virtues are called good depending on their probable consequences not for him but for us and society: the praise of virtues has always been far from “selfless,” far from “unegoistic.” Otherwise one would have had to notice that virtues (like industriousness, obedience, chastity, filial piety, and justice) are usually harmful for those who possess them, being instincts that dominate them too violently and covetously and resist the efforts of reason to keep them in balance with their other instincts. When you have a virtue, a real, whole virtue (and not merely a mini-instinct for some virtue), you are its victim. But your neighbor praises your virtue precisely on that account. One praises the industrious even though they harm their eyesight or the spontaneity and freshness of their spirit. One honors and feels sorry for the youth who has worked himself into the ground because one thinks: “For society as a whole the loss of even the best individual is merely a small sacrifice. Too bad that such sacrifices are needed! But it would be far worse if the individual would think otherwise and considered his preservation and development more important than his work in the service of society.” Thus one feels sorry for the youth not for his own sake but because a devoted instrument, ruthless against itself—a so-called “good man”—has been lost to society by his death.

>>3996427New game just dropped >>3996001Beyond that, not really. Most writers are writing. Samurai of Hyuga 6 came out but it was a 300k word filler episode. I don't know why these full time writings are taking 2-3 years to write what is basically 1-2 updates and call it a book. If you're fulltime you should have 1m words in 2 years easily, that's 2k words per day with weekends off. They should be hitting double that if they're fulltime, easily.
>>3996438Huh. Well, see you guys again in about a month
>>3996200because i can.i agree with the other guy who said doing stuff for my own benefit is le good. good and evil and primitive concepts anyway. the words themselves are subject to corruption and the forces of chaos. therefore you cannot have good or evil without order. so in making a decision or even question whether something is good/bad, you already side with order. but the universe is chaos. constant chaos, therefore anything that has a decision and outcome is already a favourable outcome if you side with order.

What yin element gets the most use in AC? Darkness is kind of underwhelming, it said stealth and trickery but Light seems better for that.
>>3998852Ice from what I've found
>>3998852No idea, honestly. I always play with the exact same build. I change the order of some stuff to "optimize" but the build is the same - human, aoyusumu, water + storm. I'm probably going to also go with Flayed as my foundation.
>>3998852Shadow is a pretty good auto solution for fights and trials. More so than light for Chapter 8 and beyond, really.Water and earth are also safe picks for many solutions and good techniques (plus free advancements)
>>3998852I wouldn't discredit it completely. It comes with a very useful melee ability and the passive ability that absorbs aura from fights can be stacked with others, leading to a not so small gain on the long term.

And it has AP absorption techniques.Generally, ice from yin and light from yang are the ones that I rank lowest., but they still have some good techniques and solutions.Aoyusumu light and shadow balanceman is pretty interesting
>>3998866Does this count the various [Element event[ that give extra prowess?Granted, a few of them are actually automatic successes hidden behind choices you would not know use the element (after so many runs, I just discovered that blasting Daichi while having storm has a unique scene)

For Aura clash, does anyone have a case for accessories that are worth having over the elemental crests?Beyond the argument of 'fuck synergy, I get 2 elements I like'.
>>4000160The crests are the best ones but you could make a case for the kiihakai style bonus one from desdemona's quest.

Doubly true for Kiihakai, since they can't bomb a sectmaster in ch9 for a free crest and a black belt.An additional skill level that you can switch in and out is increasingly useful as the game starts throwing at you common 4 and 5 skill rank requirements.
>>4000840While there are a few adept locked choices (plus extra damage events or bypassing the stat check), the core bonuses on top of that with proper synergy is what make me pick it every time. With just a single one, you are probably correct that you might as well settle for everything else

>>4002069>>4002074I picked up robinson crusoe to read, i think one of my inspirations is this old pre rendered adventure game i vividly remember playing as a kid of a dude that was captured by pirates escaping and wounding up on a deserted island. My idea for a first chapter would be having a handful of backgrounds that all ended up on a mercantile cum transport vessel either working as a deckhand, a passanger or a stowaway in a vaguely 17th century setting having a chance to meet and interact with some of the characters before things go sideways. Right now i'm drawing up a rough outline of the structure and list of what to research, like learning some real life nautical knowledge for the deckhand background and the boat itself

I'll try my hand at it but i'm more confident creating the other aspects is what i'm saying, at least at this point, when i have a better understanding of the characters i want, their dynamics and relationship to the player character i'll feel more confident in breaching the subject.

That monarchs always had to weigh court factions against one another, deal with unruly vassals and be careful not to have one estate in the realm dominate the other ones, so it was never smooth sailing, but these hacks don't understand that. >>4003462It's obvious that none of the people writing about the middle ages have read anything about the middle ages. And that includes the good ones too - ITFO is generally regarded as one of the better nobleslop games, right? But the writer clearly doesn't know much about actual medieval warfare.Like, for example, he treats organizing your troops into legions as this ancient forgotten secret that makes them ultradupergreat, but that's completely fucking retarded. Roman legions were obsolete by the time rome fell, much less a thousand years later. Does he think that people just stopped understanding warfare?
>>4003464>Does he think that people just stopped understanding warfare? It's them not understanding warfare and instead of learning anything about it simply taking what they know and treating it as expert knowledge when in reality it's very basic and should be extremely commonThat and logistics has been reddit's favorite buzzword for like a decade now. No longer is the most retarded fantasy question a "what about their tax policy?", it's now "what about the logistics". And no, they don't understand logistics either beyond knowing it's a thing that happens during war and whoever has bigger number of logistics wins the war
>>4003474In all fairness, to accurately portray pre-industrial military logistics with any degree of accuracy beyond "Fight during harvest season and forage shit" would be downright impossible in a simplistic text game.Trust me, I made a whole fucking excel spreadsheet to calculate daily consumption of food and fodder in kilograms for my 4chinz military fanfic nonsense and it doesn't even scratch the surface of reality.
>>4003474Admittedly, logistics is the more important part of warfare but as you said, they know nothing of it. Ask them a question about how they are going to make sure the army has water at every point of the war and they will not be able to give you a correct answer.
In medieval wars logistics only meant rampaging through the countryside taking everything you could while looting and burning and murdering and raping and maiming and so on.

Anyone have some underrated CYOA games that they would recommend? For ChoiceScript stuff, I tried Silverworld, Mask of the Plague Doctor, and Bootlegger. Silverworld was actually very good, which I wasn’t expecting as most of Kyle Marquis’s stuff outside of WoD titles have middling reviews, and I’d say it’s in the top quarter of CS titles out there. What I expected going into Plague Doctor was a grimdark fantasy story, but instead it had much dark humor and leaned into the Orks gameplay style of getting you to a “main hub” chapter then letting you pick which faction storyline you want to experience for the rest of the game. Pretty good game, but like every other Choice game it for some reason veers into you needing to decide on the fate of a monarchy as a random nobody which soured the end of it a bit for me. The true standout title for me though was Bootlegger, as it had exceeded in quality for pretty much every metric I have going into these games. The story was long without being bloated, and the different choices you can make color how the game goes without branching off into numerous, shallow divergences. There’s a lot of focus on building your character from their background to how you personally apply your skill choices, so a player can focus on persuasion but then specify if you’re a huckster or a genuine advocate. Bootlegger felt like a long picaresque adventure and one of the few games in its genre I wanted to keep going rather than looking for an off-ramp. The only downsides for it were the characters which have relationship stats are a little thin and by the end some become caricatures of themselves, and the game has a pretty abrupt ending which feels like the writer wanted to avoid addressing all the choice and consequences of Prohibition ending in a game that was all about bootlegging.
>>4004812On the less obscure side, I also tried out the latest couple of Hunter the Reckoning games. Wang’s Hunter game genuinely wasn’t as bad as I expected with the reception I saw it got as well as his own post-Morten on it. I enjoyed the characters and thought they were written well, outside of the female activist of the main group who felt pretty one-dimensional and now I can’t even remember her name. It’s a very low-stakes game, but it makes the struggle feel a lot more rewarding and I got more investment having to work my ass off to beat some upstart Thinbloods and a middle manager Camarilla member with some road flares, a pistol, and wits as opposed to the game Out for Blood that gave you a very literal automatic shotgun with white phosphorous to take on anything you wanted. It’s not a great game by any means though, and it comes off as a job for the paycheck rather than a project there was genuine interest in.The other game I played, Beast of Glenkildove, started out well with a long introduction to all the characters who had good motivations and solid backgrounds, but it really devolves once you get into the present day sections and then the actual hunting. All the great characters of the opening become cardboard cut-out archetypes like the finance bro, the mystic, the punk rock chick, etc. and the game has such bad pacing it’s impossible to spend any time learning more about them unless you commit all of your very precious and rare free time blocks to hanging out with them instead of prepping. There’s 15 different subplot going on and you have enough time to complete 1 if you’re focused. I would go as far to say that most of the critiques leveled at Wang with his Hunter game apply for this game equally if not more so. After all this I need to try the Werewolf game for a mostly good experience, at least from what I’ve heard.
>>4003474>>4003478>>4003480It’s a large scope to cover for very little returns unless you’re doing a game about a war that spans years and years. At most a couple people will appreciate the explanation on how a route for supply deliveries is made and maintained. The middle ground that Choice of Rebels and ITFO (to a smaller extent) go for in giving you options for foraging as well pillaging with mentions of the drawbacks that has long-term works IMO. Long-term warfare is inherently boring from an audience perspective: they want to hear a war ended from a decisive battle not because of granary depletions.

>>4004957For CoG? Yeah the company was founded in 2009
>>4004845I'll admit it - I like the "Hero or Villain" series. It's fun. You also get your choice of several evil woman love interests.
>>4004842>>4004842I’ll have to check it out, I avoided it at release after being burned on Heroes Rise, but good to hear it’s mostly a quality game. Thanks for the recommendation.>>4004918Thank you for the suggestions: I tried Belle-de-nuit and it had some good sparks but like most of the Heart’s Choice games I come away feeling it would be better if it focused more on the plot and less on the porn side of things. Moreytown I had never heard of, but it looks similar to Blacksad which is interesting. >>4004932I still consider Slammed one or the best games put out for Choice games. For how good it is, it and Tin Star are almost never recommended.
>>4004812right sorry, I was going to reply to you but the idea of a bingo came to me and I got sidetracked lmaoI don't think I ever finished SIlverworld and I can't remember why. prolly played it before I discovered save slot mods and dropped it cuz of a wrong choice or something. I remember liking the bot and the beePlague was good until I got the ending where the doctor waifu got mad at me for not siding with the royal society and broke up with me. like not even a relationship check wtf? I had 90+ dammitBootlegger was really buggy for me. like it kept showing me results that didn't match my choices/stats. did you encounter any bugs on your end?imo the problem for most CoG games are that they start good but the endings usually suck (see Unsupervised for a recent example). the ones with good endings are the railroady ones. personally, I prefer a good ending (quality wise) over a good intro or mid stage. so for reccs, that completely depends on what you want in a story. you've already played Slammed and Tin Star, which are my usual reccs. have you tried Turandot? it's got great atmosphere, but basically no story deviations. it doesn't even have stats. I remember liking The Fog Knows Your Name but can't remember why. Kitsune is really good assuming you don't get filtered by the generic intro and you actually pursue the Kitsune RO. or maybe Specters of the Deep
>>4005348 (me)ah right almost forgot. I, Cyborg was pretty interesting too. granted, I did make choices that most people wouldn't have taken (sided with no one and was generally suicidal).
>demo about being a master thief>"oh cool i can roleplay lupin">starts good with not-zenigata chasing after notlupin after his latest heist before suddenly capeshitGoddamnit. I should have known when one of the backgrounds was just catwoman
>>4005348>>4005356I’ve never heard of I, Cyborg but taking a look at the store page it looks interesting and has very solid reviews. Thanks for recommending it! Yeah, the robot lady and the bee woman are the highlights of Silverworld, I like when Kyle Marquis does oddball love interests in general it’s where his writing shines. I had the exact same experience with the breakup in Plague; I really didn’t like how railroaded the royal conflict was and it did spoil it for me a bit. For Bootlegger I didn’t have any glitches like that. I played it around January so I assume it was patched out, unless you played it sooner. I haven’t tried Turandot, I’ll have to take a look as usually I don’t like if there’s not deviations, but if it’s good writing quality that can be an exception. I agree about the endings of COG games usually being the weakest part, and in most cases the games that are the most memorable for me nail the ending even if they don’t exceed in anything else.
>>4005423I liked the antagonist more than the robot, but her romance was hard to get due to only having a couple of interactions throughout the game. I think you have to pick all the correct options to succeed, otherwise she ends up with the stone monk
>>4005423I see. I guess I should try out Bootlegger again. I did like the premiseTurandot is basically a litmus test for passion and romance. it's fiery and intense. you'll either love it or cringe to death at its cheesiness
>>4005443Bootlegger sucks, don't waste your time
Turnadot was kino calaf deserved a better bro
>>4004845No bingo but from this chart i've played and enjoyed>Mecha Ace>Fog knows your name>Heart of the house>Infinity

etymology wise, how do you know when naming a character a name if its too on the nose? ideally i want my character's names to reflect part of their personality or role or the overall theme of the work without being so overt as to be disruptive?
>>4005995>etymology wise, how do you know when naming a character a name if its too on the nose? When its “Vile Shlomo”
>>4005995that's the writer's job. he's supposed to give you samples of names that fit the setting. then you can either choose one of them or come up with something that matches
>>4005997Fortinbras (“Strong Arms”) from Hamlet was pretty good too
>>4006005i'm talking about for writing a cyoa
>>4006007ah thought you meant as a player lmao.that depends on what kinda setting you want. you can use thematic names, but that tends to disrupt suspension of disbelief for a bit. that works fine for shounen or other semi comedic settings but if you're gonna write a gritty WWII story, you can't name someone Major Major unless it's for a one off joke that the characters acknowledge in storyfor serious settings, what I usually do is come up with names that I think the character's parents would name them. a proud family begets a proud name. a sickly child is given a name that invokes life. lazy parents give a lazy name. stuff like that
>>4006016thanks for the advice anon, i appreciate it. I'm playing around with a heavily megami tesnei inspired story, on one hand i'd like to connect the characters to some sort of theology and mythology, but i don't want them to be completely tied to those either. i like the name Penelope, which is connected to the Odysseus myth. i don't know how in line with the penelope of my story will end up with the penelope in myth, but i would like to incorporate one or two aspects of her namesake within her character, and for a majority of instances she would be referred to as "penny" and not her full name, which makes me think of coinage, maybe she could have a mercantile background?
>>4006022ah, smt. yeah definitely go for mythological names and derivatives like your Penny example.you don't have to match the actual character 1:1. just a few traits and the same role in the story works. Penelope is the archetypal "faithful wife". I don't remember much about her aside from her having a lot of suitors and the whole weaving thing. Maybe she can be a love interest? Maybe a spunky tomboy childhood friend merchant like Tressa from Octopath? She can even use her name as a slogan for something. Or maybe a flower in a mountain peak unattainable beauty type to reference the whole suitor thing? What's the age range you're going for? SMT usually has teens but you mentioned a mercantile background so I'm getting the impression that she's working age.
>>4006025i was thinking that the protagonist and most of the main characters would be graduating seniors so around 18 or becoming 18 soon and having the impending future of becoming an adult and entering that world. with a few such as the protagonist's neighborhood friend underclassman who is just one big nakajima/hazama reference, the school stuff would mostly be a background other than a chapter or arc of Dionysus or a similar figure starts influencing the student body who become more and more uninhibited and lose, something that at first could be chalked up to midterms or final week stress that would get more intense as students forgo studying or observing school rules for partying and indulging in vices. straight honor students suddenly askewing their perfect attendance records, pandemonium in the cafeteria! and it would be the protagonist's and supporting cast's job to sniff out the real cause of it all and deal with it. but that would be the highest point of relevance the school would have. penny i was thinking of being a classmate who through circumstances ends up being your main devil busting partner and someone you could bounce on that doesn't have a large alignment bias, of the characters she would be the one most concerned about the individuals behind the beliefs and keeping the party all on the same side and not schisming due to differing philosophies
>>4006033back.imo, that sounds more like Persona than SMT. Or at least it doesn't sound apocalyptic and it's more like shadows going berserk. The whole becoming adults thing is psychological instead of ideological too.so I Penny gonna be the Neutral rep? or more like a die hard friend that'll follow you anywhere like Atsuro in Devil Survivors?personality wise, you can make her be famous. maybe she's pretty. or maybe she's just friendly and approachable. another possible angle is handicrafts, as a nod to the whole weaving thing. or just have her be really loyal and always on the player's side, tho that might be bad for a cyoa
Anyone buying anything from the Steam Summer sale?
>>4006553No.
>>4006538Yeah, tonally i kind of want it to start as a devil summoner game, with the possibility of it to go wrong/the main group fissuring, i want each big confrontation or event to reinforce something in a character's progession that eventually ends up with them being at odds with the others
>>4005887>>4005893Nah I genuinely don't think either of those helps, and I liked them. Sins is THAT bad.

>>4009572based Liu Bei
>>4009399>>4009421Quality over quantity is difficult to properly assess because sometimes a work with quality, like Planescape, or Disco, comes with a lot of quantity either on purpose to go for a certain vibe (Disco) or because there's a lot of information the player needs to properly engage with the setting.

Isobel is going to be a massive iron fist dictator but its okay because she's a woman and that makes her a girlboss. i still sided with royalists because they seemed like the better choice for protecting my dragoon's sorry hide when war became inevitable, and he gets to be a mopey asshole who constantly laments about how his life sucks
>>4010425Wulframite is just the better option storywise. Honestly amazing how well Wang managed to make them. It's a shame we'll probably never get Wars, because getting to play the "traitor" who is basically fighting all of his former friends would be kino.
>>4010425My dragoon is a merciful cynic who sided with wulfrim but thinks this is a lost cause
>>4010428Wulfram just kind of struck me as a bit of a somewhat sleazy politican/city boy that doesn't know what its really like to be a soldier, that and he wanted to block the military reform which would be desperately needed if they don't want to repeat antar. Speaking to him more changed my position a bit to see him as a stubborn idealist with his heart in the right place, but also kind of twofaced with the underhanded political manuvers he (and isobel) make. I didn't like royalists either and for my first playthrough stayed with cunaris and tried to keep the peace before tradgedy struck and broke cunaris's spirit, and my dragoon got roped into working for the royalists. I don't like isobel but i do like interacting with garrett, welles, and caz. There is room to be a royalist and just constantly be a dick to isobel and internally think about how fucked up this all is while ascending to being the head of the military which i like, theres a great option if you get the offer from isobel to approve a marriage between the dragoon and welles if the dragoon has high cynic/mercy where he internally laments that his matrimony would set a dangerous precident of the crown going over the cortes
>>4010438>that and he wanted to block the military reform which would be desperately needed if they don't want to repeat antarThe military reform is important, but let's be honest here, Tierra couldn't wage a war for shit. They can't even feed themselves. If someone like Takara or Kian tried to invade them they wouldn't even need to touch the soil, just block the food shipments and watch them starve.
>>4010439Tierra could be named Pariah Among the Nations at any point and implode. It's a failed state, your barony is a meme and you would probably have better prospects if you fucked off to that continent that's having a civil war and carve a piece for yourself as a mercenary. I would even take my beloved Antari serfs as the new and better settlers.
>>4010446I'll give one thing to the loyalists; I don't see Tierra becoming a relevant nation unless a competent absolute ruler takes it by the reins and organizes everything into a good shape. If our barony is anything to go by, most tierran land that is even arable is completely wasted on inefficient management. Ultimately, though, that doesn't change the fact that Isobel is a bitch-ass motherfucker who only cares about exerting absolute control.
>>4010454The only future Tierra could have would be if the Tierrans were banished and the superior Antari took their place. They would turn the place into a breadbasket of the world.

>>4010746>The whole thing is a victory lap after the edgelord wins the battleOnly if your goal is survival. If you do not bend over backwards and twist yourself into a pretzel several times over then Wulfram, much like on wulframite path, gets away with almost all of his forces with royalist side crippled. Same logic is extended to two paths as a whole. On Wulframite side, you can twiddle your thumbs or even fuck off to the estate and almost all faction goals will be accomplish without your input while the battle itself will default to about 2/3rds of the army pulled out.On the other side of the coin, you are literally carrying the royalist cause on your back and every little decision has compounding effects on how much better the odds are in your factions favor. Cazarosta may have stolen your thunder in the opening minutes, but he's only there to prevent the complete collapse of the faction and Wulfram winning on the spot, everything after that is purely your effort.Basically, the royalist battle is the boring, by the book, decided by preparation victory Castermaine wanted to accomplish while wulframite battle is encapsulated in the charge: flashy, heroic, pointless and unnecessary bloodletting and managing to hammer out a ceasefire that lets you pull literally everyone out is objectively the cooler Wulframite side ending

On the topic of actual real deal CYOAs, Veritas Tales: Witch of the Dark Castle will be out in 3 days.
>>4012978Cute witch, might buy it.
>>4011980>>4011947Could be either or given the nature of it as a Hollywood leech expose or something of that nature. It is weird that there's no demo but seeing as how it's more like Glenkildove, except for being excessively Irish kino, I think it'll be at least possible. Cannot be worse than Sins of the Sire at least.
What cyoa let me live the stacy experience?

"You have some nerve to talk about looks!" "Oh please." You laugh. "I'm a jade beauty sought after despite growing up poor. You're a ceramic mug //avoided// despite growing up rich." "Outer West's beauty standards are simply behind the times!" She insists. "In Outer East I am the shining jewel-" "-of marrying out of poverty." You interrupt. "Name ''one'' prominent Trialgoer who has given you the time of day. Goro has his own money. Brass Tiger has the Northern Army's resources. Jack assumes the world belongs to him. None of them need your money, so none of them even //talk// do you, do they? Because they certainly chat with me any chance they get." She holds up a hand covered in solid brilliant white chi. "They can talk to your corpse!"Y-yeah. That's the cattiest shit I have ever read. Anon must have hung out with the cheerleaders in his high school.

Playing Arcadia Fallen II and watching latest episode of Iruma (and looking back on the series), really reminded me how persistent of an issue it is that in magic academy settings characters barely go to any classes and do very little actual magical schooling. I am now pretty sure only Harry Potter and Academagia do the concept properly. I guess Keeper also has some classes focus, but it leans to the former. I now really want to make a magic academy game that is actually focused on school aspect.
Oh I forgot about Waywalkers

Trying to figure out how to get the best outcome in shattered eagle. Do you guys side with the legate or consuls? Is it possible to ally with both? Also, how do you save augusta during the attack?
