I do not care for tactical rpgs
The thing is you have to ease into SPRGS>Hated FFT when I played it initiallyLack of towns and only having battles put me off in my preteen years, I only got to chapter one and dropped it for Lunar. >Play Arc the Lad Collection >Play FFTA>Return to Tactics and I love it >Get hooked on SRPGS and play the NIS series and Growlanser series as the years pass.
>>3991143I do not care for action rpgs
>>3991143I don't believe you.
>>3991143I too do not like them. I feel like the tactical elements get in the way of the RPG elements and vice versa. I know that positioning is a good way to add depth at a certain point it just becomes everything.
>>3991143They're hit or miss. Get it? But seriously they can be great in a moment, and not quite in the next.
>>3991143That's okay. The most important thing in RPGs is choices and consequences. You do not like them, that is okay. Therefore, you are gay. That is the consequence.
>>3991253You're right, I have never heard a gay say "I care for tactical RPGs". I always thought that was sus
Tactical RPGs are peak when done well. Problem is some of them tend to have awful pacing.
>>3991259Weird. I've only ever heard gays say that.
>>3991262That gave me an idea: two opposed factions, both gay, but disagree on caring about tactical RPGs. With high enough speech skill, low disarray score, and leaving a certain NPC alive, you can convince them that being gay is more important than preferences on video games.
>>3991143That's ok. They do not care for you either.
I hate the whole "you HAVE TO spread out your exp well or you can be fucked" thing. Especially in no grind games
>>3991310Fire Emblem and Symphony of War both make use of rubberband exp formulae, so that feeling is self-inflicted.
>>3991310Name 1 game where this is true.
>>3991310>you HAVE TO use your army wellBased, brainlets get filtered
>>3991263Wait a minute... that's just /v/!
>>3991146Whats a good SRPG?I only ever played FE and i liked it but i dont like how leveling works in those gamesThey kinda force you to use your best units since only units who participate in battle get exp and so you just snowball and only use the units that are already good while the mediocore ones stay behind and age badlyI also dont like how permadeath can ruin your entire playthrough if you lose a good unit since you usually get only 1 tank or 1 or 2 cavalier units and if those guys die then youre entire team is basically fuckedIt encourages you to cheese the game and play it as safe as possible without trying any risky plays
>>3991497JA2, or if you want a jap one, Front Mission 5
I like replaying FFTactics.I've played a few Disgaea games, but they're all kind of the same. I played the demo for Kemco's Cross Tails and was not impressed.
>>3991449>Wait a minute... that's just /v/!Yes, and that is how /vrpg/ was born.
>>3991143They are too slow and prone to snowballing. Most of the time there's a clear point where you can't lose but are expected to waste time cleaning up
>>3991497Troubleshooter: Abandoned Children is one of the best SRPGs of all time. Has a pretty slow-paced start but it gets better.
>>3991504>I played the demo for Kemco's Cross Tails and was not impressed.I mean you should've always expected mediocrity from Kemco..Together with the devs of Mercenaries Saga they are two cheeks of the same arse.
>>3991497I like permadeath, I want semi-realistic mechanics in my RPGs>It encourages you to cheese the game and play it as safe as possible without trying any risky playsHey it's basically simulated warfare, every leader tries to minimize casualties. That's why FE is rather grounded compared to other JRPGs
>>3991585Permadeath is great until it isn't in FE. In the games designed for Permadeath it's really fun and a great way to play if you keep yourself honest. In later ones like 3 houses it's not built around the mechanic so it just feels like it's there to be there.
>>3991497You are supposed to have units die in Fire Emblem. This is why crits do high damage, some games have gaiden chapters based on units lost, etc.
>>3991588>Permadeath is great until it isn't in FENot really, BBros and DD got permadeath just fine.Hating permadeath is just OCD.
cont.>>3991596Sorry I think I misread the post. But I don't think permadeath ever fails in FE.I do think they should make dead characters play more part in the story though.
>>3991598In Reclass Emblem it's entirely pointless. Everyone can do everything so a permanent death is easily made up for, and in 3H specifically you just don't get units in the 2nd half of the game so if you lose one you're just done. The older ones were built around expecting you to lose units and getting makeup ones later. Maybe they're not quite as good, but they're usually comparable.
>>3991351Age of decadence
>>3991642Permadeath isn't exactly a system to punish anything, it's just for realism. So I don't agree that because "people can just do this instead to bypass the system" it doesn't work as a mechanic.
>>3991143They could be good but they all suck for some reason. I think Japs just don't know how to make them, all the good /vst/ games are western
>>3991679Wait I just remembered Shining Force, those are good, the early ones anyway
>>3991679>could be good but they all suck
>>3991681I think he means that they have the potential to be good but aren't.Stupid take though.
>>3991143>>3991679Play Reverse Collapse Codename Bakery and then get back to me.
>>3991497> Whats a good SRPG?Like I said >Arc the Lad CollectionPLAY WITH A GUIDE. It's from that era they were trying to sell them. You will miss out on secret quests, one time items One is a prologue to two, it starts off a little slow; but it picks up.>FFTAIt's much easier than Tactics, but it will get you into it>FFTWatch HCBailly's let's play, he really breaks everything down and makes it much more accessible >NIS seriesplay in order >rhapsody>la pucelleplay the psp version or PC>disgaeapc or psp>phantom bravepc or wii>Makai kingdompsp>disgaea 2\pc or psp>prinny can I be the hero?>soul nomad>disgaea 3Vita version or PC>prinny can I be the hero? 2>Zettai hero project>disgaea 4>disgaea D2>disgaea 5Quality of life makes it hard to return to other games after the fact. Also story.
>>3991497cont. from >>3991706>I only ever played FEDaq are you doing playing Fire Emblem first?! That's pro-shit, put that down. Of course you aren't going to like SRPGS playing that first.
>>3991146Shining force?
>>3991143Do they insist upon themselves?
>>3991143>Look into the "tactical" RPG genre>It's just bunch of JRPGs but with a gridWHERE ARE THE FUCKING "TACTICS"?
>>3992840Define tactics
>>3992853It's basically>>3992840>It's just bunch of JRPGs but with a grid
Tactics: My decisions only matter for winning this battle.Strategy: My decisions matter for winning the war.See the difference?
Anything new coming up? All the trpg I found are very cartoony or strange roguelike mixtures.
>>3992965Tactics is shitposting on one board. Strategy is shitposting on all of them.
>>3991143what's the difference between a tactical RPG vs a normal turn based RPG? it's the same shit for uncs with slow reflexes.
>>3993396Tactical RPGs usually go for more complexity and more units on the field to manage
>>3991143they might as well be puzzle games right?
>>3991143I will not play Reverse Collapse because it requires a 10GB+ file size storage requirement.
>>3996011as opposed to a 10GB+ non-file-size storage?
>>3996011Games should be measured in 3.5" floppies to shame the jeets bloatmaxxing everything through incompetence
>>3996014 (you)Imagine telling an electrical engineer from the 80s that an operating system would occupy four billion, eight billion, twelve billion bytes of memory while idling at the desktop doing literally nothing
>>3996016could've used those storage space better for something else than a turn based tactical rpg
>>3996016an OS is never doing "nothing"
>>3996052It is if you are using Windows in the last decade
>>3992840>just a bunch of JRPGsTheres also a lot of tactical rpgs that are just xcom
>>3991143I just dropped Tactics Ogre because while I wanted to like it, the battles felt too basic and the pacing was really slow, especially since I was trying to keep all my characters leveled and properly equipped.
>>3996251All battles are identical. Have you played reborn or another version? Grinding in reborn isn't a thing.
>>3996269Reborn. Grinding was to get my whole party up to union level.
>>3991497Vandal Hearts is the most balanced one that I've played, especially the Saturn version. The terrain mechanics are well done and the CPU was constantly pulling one on me that I didn't expect. Shining Force III is the most soulful one.
>>3996273How come? Latest one training gives you more than one level up and being one level under the enemies party level shouldn't be all to bad. Are you sure you don't suck? There are weapons giving you status effects and accessories can make a difference, even defenders ring +1. There are countless hints that help, like leveling everyone as warrior or warlock (mages and clerics only), using ninja as ranged, utilizing counter units, consumables alone make you pretty imba aso. Grinding takes like half an hour tops every few hours of story gameplay. Then again, if you already do like it, post game is like 300 fights or enemies that are far above your level.
>>3996620You seem like an idiot that tries to hard to default to git gud because you're too stupid to process any other complaints about a game. I'm not complaining about difficulty at all. I'm literally talking about the time it takes to level up all the units you've recruited because you can only do story battles with 10-12, but having 30 or 40+ (which is easy if you try to collect every type of unit and all uniques) means that once the union level goes up by 2 or 3 levels, you then need to spend 2 hours doing skirmishes or dungeon battles to bring everyone else up to that level. When I want to kill things, I just have berserkers with poison weapons and buffs one shot everything, dragoons to one shot beasts, and then a bunch of dragons that are maximized using breath attacks to nuke everything. The problem is that I also want to keep other units leveled to see what kind of abilities they get, and it absolutely does not take only a half hour tops every few hours of story. It takes at least 2 battles to hit the new level cap once it goes up, and it takes at least 3 full rotations for all the units.
>>3996689>all the units you've recruitedSee>>3996689>You seem like an idiot that tries to hardWhy would you do that and halt story progress when you have plenty of filler combat during the story? That's like exceptionally stupid. You waste all the story xp that are like 5x the training xp and waste time training hundreds of units you will never use. I doubt I've ever heard something more stupid this year. Well, an ward is an award, so here you go, zoomba.
>>3996701>You waste all the story xpAt no point was I getting exp on capped characters while I had others that weren't capped, with the exception of Denim. You're wrong and you're angry that I (rightfully) call you stupid. Only retards can't comprehend any sort of criticism about a game they like without trying to turn it into a non-existent complaint about difficulty. >Well, an ward is an award, so here you go, zoomba.I'm 35, you stupid ESLmonkey. It's almost impressive how when retards get called out for crying about non-existent difficulty complaints, they start randomly screaming about zoomers.
>>3996704>you're angryAm not, what a thing to say. I never had these problems. I did like two trainings as I dont use consumables and other self imposed limits as>>3996269>All battles are identicalThat's the #1 reason the game becomes unplayable after a while. Post game has incredibly tanky games and without summons it's a chore unlike any other. Especially as the fucks keep healing themselves. After achieving the real or fanfic ending twice, there's nothing to do. Power gaming in this game is beyond boring, so that falls off, too.
Has anyone a list of the new tactics games that were introduced during the summer fests?. Ost of them seem to be rogue.
>>3991143they are better than any other turn based rpg
>>3991497>Whats a good SRPG?Langrisser 2 for Genesis.Mechcommander 2.Yggdra Union.
>>3996251Tactics Ogre is one of the best because you can have all these unit synergies like Terror Knights inflicting status effects while archers finish off the unit to help deal with the TK's slow turn speed. It's much better than FFT-styled job system games where you just make a handful of overpowered units.
>>3991715>>3991715Shining Force I, II and III are all great. I've played the first two over and over throughout the years. I grew up with them but they hold up wonderfully. They have a remade version on GBA that adds content for the first one, I don't think the second entry had that treatment but I could be wrong as I've never looked for it.Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre are the most popular and mentioned a lot in these threads. They are good, all versions are fine, research the differences and pick one that sounds right for you.I highly recommend Vandal Hearts I and II. They are wonderful games. It would be nice to see them put in the work to bring back both Shining Force and Vandal Hearts in a big way.
>>4003492>It's much better than FFT-styled job system games where you just make a handful of overpowered units.unless you mean the TO:LUCT remakes, the OG SNES/PSX LUCT was basically "get archers/ninjas equipped with bows and win". at least until you reach the final boss where you have to use some strategy or tricks because of its high defence and changing elements each round. or you play the optional Palace of Dead, where it's basically spam the hit-all spells except for the tougher boss fights.
