It's going to be the latter but you might as well think of it as the first because you don't understand the difference anyways.

Essentially, it's going to ship the whole unity engine as a simple ready-to-use package with its own higher level rpg editor instead of standard unity tools. It's not a plugin you add to your unity project.

This is my 2 cents in solidarity. It's an unfortunate event, even for a turbo lurker of RPGM threads and forums since 2007 such as myself. VH unironically got me into RPG Maker, I even learnt a bit of Wapanese to get the general gist of what I was playing. When MV dropped I was there for that feeling of oomph and new tools/toys to play with, which was a fun time.

I just hope GGG doesn't do something giga-retarded in the future with licensing or something along the lines of what Unity tried to pull off awhile back. posting progress
I've been sick lately, so I haven't been able to get in a good headspace to work for extended periods of time. I've built a test dungeon to see how easy it is to create static encounters, since I prefer them over random ones, but there's a pretty obvious problem right now where I have to manually set every enemy's X & Y values per event. So my next step is to make my own version of Troops if I want to make this part simpler.
The actual battle mechanics still aren't done, but I needed a change of pace after having my head so deep in figuring out how to structure the entire battle system. I'm still unsure how I'm going to handle enemy AI, or how to handle damage formulas in general, but I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually.

random encounters because i like the kind of tension they bring to travel, and the personality they give to certain regions. superboss dungeons because players would presumably like to have difficult, optional content to test their builds and get powerful items as a result. two of them because that's the amount i wanted to do. chapters and act format because it's an easy way to structure my game. you're looking for five items, the town/dungeon/town/dungeon boss structure (though sometimes i break from this for variety) which you go through to get one of the items is a chapter, which has its own mini story and its own theming. the pirate chapter, the knight arena chapter, the cult chapter, the forest chapter, the desert chapter and the final chapter.

One philosophy to RPG design is character progression. Another is mastery. Personally, I think of these as vertical and horizontal axis.
Power levels and attributes. The attributes might be things like elemental skills, or material grade. A choice between Fire and Ice might be arbitrary if neither provide any advantages. There's barely 2 pages of threads and it's only super generic stuff anyone with more than 1 year of exp with the software can figure out. Hey guys.
I have a world in my head that I want to bring into a playable medium via video games. I am stuck between RPGMaker and Mount & Blade: Warband.
The setting is focused on warfare between various medieval fantasy factions, but I also have specific stories in my head with set protagonists. I like the world simulation and mass combat aspects of Warband, but also specific, smaller scale stories that one could tell with RPGMaker. Also, I like drawing which is perfect for RPGMaker. Warband, being 3D, doesn't really allow for 2D dialogue portraits.
So, what shall I do? I kind of feel like doing both, but that's not realistic at all.

I'm trying to setup a water walking upgrade for my game and how I've been doing it is just painting all water tiles with a region thats unpassable unless the water walking switch is ON, but now that Im making an area with lots of water on every screen Im realizing how much of a pain it is, is there a better way to do something like this? I don't think I can use database terrain tags because theyre already in use for a footstep script and walkable things like blood are the same tag as waters

Just duplicate the tileset. Add passage to the water tile you want.
You can toggle between tilesets with the "Change Tileset" event command.

This also works for bridges and balconies who's star passage changes depending on what floor they're on.

The catch is that this passage would be true for all walking events, not just the player. So you might have to enclose NPCs in a barrier of blank events, so that they don't randomly walk out on the water while waterwalk is on.

STB (so turns are decided as you get to them, not at the start of the round). it's a pretty standard dragon quest pastiche with an emphasis on inflicting status effects, buffs and debuffs and finding enemy weaknesses all in low, easy to understand numbers. stats tend to range from abut 1 to 30 throughout the game. getting a +1 bonus is fairly significant, and there are tons of accessories and unique, hidden armours and weapons around the world to combine with your class/subclass to create unique builds.

Ok so my plan is to buy rpg maker 2000 (for the assets), and 2003 next week during the steam sale. Then going with 2003 + the maniacs patch, change resolution to 480x270. I've already made my template character bodies, for adults they're 36-39px tall so have to modify some default assets like doors, facades, chairs, desks and trees. I've...not done anything dev wise, except that found and fixed a bug in one of yanfly's vxa scripts that causes appcrashes, one that was just annoying, fixed the optimize feature of the quipment screen, fixed a frame delay in movement due to a bug in the default code, and... tried to help someone fix bugs in their game. meh-

I complained somewhere about the rules and moderation of rpg maker guild, who believes that critique is slander and who also believes that moderating critique is madated by japanese law. (both of these are not true).

but in all practicality, I'm a no-dev and the way the community is makes me not want to do anything, as eventually I'd be basically rewarding them. It hasn't been helpful at least.

Still thinking about making a tutorial, but- I don't like making accounts and publicity and such. I also have no real interest in making videos, and knowing people solve problems with AI which is fine for now, means people don't really need it.

A common problem I saw in the few projects I downloaded was getting soft lock. You walk into a room with no exit. Or the move route only works if you triggered it from the right direction.

It kind of works. But when you take out the spatial context of the maps it's still a little disorderly.

I noticed some bad habits a lot of developers have, myself included. Sometimes we forget to write the speaker's name.
And a lot of people use party members as event flags, rather than switches.
I imagine they think the 2nd party member isn't going anywhere, so that condition will always be true. Until they decide to split the part later in the game. If the player backtracks to the beginning areas, they'll likely find themselves repeating early quests events because that party member isn't with them to flag the event as completed.

Different anon here. But if you try to work with RM's default menu windows, you'll run into issues. Not because it's broken but because it's incomplete. The windowskin have left and right content arrows, so you'd think you'd be able to scroll/page horizontally the same way you do vertically. But that's something that was never coded in, in this or the previous editors.

i made a party system like dragon warrior 3. the main character is a fixed main character, Noble class, then you can register up to three party members, and choose their class between Warrior, Mage, Thief and Pilgrim. i gave each class a sprite and portrait, and you can drop off members in your party at the party registry, or pick up dropped off members. i could have used a plugin, but i want to get away from all that and get more ambitious with variables and conditional branches
later in the game, you'll get an item of some sort that allows you to switch the subclasses of your party members. you could have three Warriors, one of them dual classing mage, one dual classing Pilgrim and one Dual Classing Thief if you wanted. you could just be the hero alongside your singular Warrior/Thief buddy, make a balanced or purposely off-kilter party, experiment at your leisure and come up with something interesting. pretty excited about this :)

I have a dungeon with a mini boss fight give the players a big struggle to give them a inkling about the upcoming final boss fight. The mini boss fight is on a different map from the event of the stairs being hidden. I want to connect the boss dying to the reveal of the stairs. oh i see. you're doing the stairs on switch during the fight. maybe try doing it in a cutscene after the enemy is defeated. i've always found that in combat events are kinda janky. it also might not fire if it's "when enemy hp = 0" because it just ends the battle, then and might ovveride the event.

also, as an efficiency thing, if you're making an event that only appears after something has been triggered and doesn't exist beforehand, you don't need the initial blank page, just the one containing the switch on condition

Normally event commands always happen in order, from top to bottom, no matter what. If the event is run, the page will (or at least should) finish. Once the event page is finished executing the instructions from top to bottom, then the map will re-examine the event, and check to see if conditions are different. If not and these instructions should run, it will start over, from top to bottom.

Your current instructions tell the game to spawn a monster and start a battle, then after that, flip the switch.

All of these things happen in the same frame. (as in the game processes everything and then waits till it is instructed to cause a game frame update)

A couple of janky things can happen especially when you involve plugins. The switch might get flipped before the battle starts for example if you have VisuStella's movement core installed. (it messes with things unfortunately).

Another thing that you should know is that Move Route (movement route in mz) works differently. It steps over each command on a frame, so only one command is run per frame. It's compared to the normal event commands very slow. (most people don't know this though)

Further 'parallel process' events always run and don't freeze the player. And so long the conditions are met the game will try to restart them.

That restarting process has a bug, that makes it wait a frame after the event is done processing all commands, causing events to run at most 30 times per second, not 60. Use loop to achieve the full 60 times. It's also less processor intensive since it doesn't need to recreate everything.
Make sure you add wait 1 frame though, otherwise it will just endlessly try to run it again and again on the same frame.

Agressive, and I disagree. Some people are interrested in developing for games, but don't have all of the skills including the patience and determination needed. Some of them don't even have time due to a full time job or for other reasons.

The comment I was responding to, detached from the context, was about someone looking at showcase of a feature pushed & aggrandized by a developer, and being disappointed when the game with that feature never comes out.

I missed that... (T_T) because I use a photoshop alternative that doesn't have AI integrated. Affinity Photo. That I think people wouldn't be familiar with so I opted saying photoshop instead.

I see now what you meant & where you're coming from. Though, it's quite the jump to assume that just because someone utilizes AI tools, that they might be using the latest & greatest tech of it, or the most expensive version of it.
I've never used AI agents. I do not know their capabilities. I've also never used a paid AI product/tool, I don't know their full capabilities either. (A lot of what I hear about them, is absolutely hyped, I feel. To sell the services.)

My experience with using AI tools is additive to what I was already doing. Which means, I'm having to work more, across more tools, and it's getting me better results.
I just asked Google Gemini (after countless failed attempts to do it myself prior) to code me a plugin, that renders the out-of-screen map environment less. Since my game was at constant 3x zoom but RPG Maker was rendering it still at 1x zoom. Inserting this plugin significantly boosted my game's performance. (Without using AI here, my game would just be... less optimized.)

Then I posed my character in 3D, and inserted it into Gemini and asked it to redraw it in retro anime style, so I can use it as wallpaper on my in-game desktop. (Without using AI in this instance, I'd just have used the 3D model as image. Which would have been less work, but wouldn't have looked as good.)

By generalizing the lazy asset flippers with ones who genuinely use it as an additive, for their effort & and the quality of output. [Not pushing all this on you as if you are the one doing it. I'm speaking more in general, as to the state of affairs is with using AI tools in the RPG Maker community.]

People who are against my work, were stating that the whole of my games were made with AI years ago, when AI was far less capable & I hadn't even used utilized it beyond just exploring it in videos. XD
